There seemed to be more influences than the movies he said he watched, but I could see them in it especially for the dog fights and for Poe. Definitely 12 o'clock high for the aerial combats.

But it seemed like he was trying to cram every influence into this movie which was fine and overall it worked, but a few scenes seemed out of place or so different. This will sound crazy but there were times it felt influenced by Firefly or something like it.

What did you see for influences?

    Great conversation to start, @Bluemilk.

The beautiful and powerful shot of the result of the Supremacy being cut in two by the Raddus is absolutely a Japanese media influence: its typical of manga and anime.

The nod to samurai films in the climactic battle between Luke and Kylo on Crait is very noticeable too.

I’ll have more to say on this later, but the entire structure of the film. It’s not your typical three acts we have over here almost uniquely in the West, and have had in every Star Wars film prior to this, but it is a flowing narrative which very much places it as having strong Eastern storytelling influences, as well as again, perhaps manga or anime, or even comics and graphic novels. I think that this radical departure in flow is why gut reactions are extremely mixed with most people’s first viewings, but seems to adjust after a consequent viewing, and I truly think that this is due to an adjustment in our minds: going into it again, we already know subconsciously that it flows differently. Taken in this context, everything on Canto Bight feeling rushed after a viewing or two makes much more sense: in any other Star Wars film, this would have been a focal point for the film and served as a location for an entire act.

I know Rian is an anime fan so I didn't think of that. The whole Rey and Kylo vs guards was for sure influenced by Japanese sword fights or something.

As for structure you're right. It was not typical. Certain beats should hit here and here. We know them by heart, so yes the structure was what made it different. But I think having to start out for the most part with Luke and Rey is what made Canto Bight seem rushed and not what I'd say developed better. There were interesting things in it though. About the kids that made me curious about, but that is for another thread.

Something else I thought the whole Rey trying to discover herslf in the cave in the mirror was influenced at least to me by older Disney movies.

Yes to a degree it was, but what mean by Firefly is some of the space shots and the interactions between characters. Not alot but it was there.

I felt like RJ really brought a lot of his experience as a TV writer to this film. The film itself felt episodic for its own events. It feels in structure like I watched 3-6 episodes of a damn good tv series.

The start of the fight between Rey and Kylo vs the pretorian made think of Akira Kurosawa's The 7 Samurais. I noticed some slow motion in that sequence. Am I allright or I saw things?....hahaha.

PS. Just watched once so far.

Nope, you’re spot on: there’s definitely slow motion, and it’s used quite a few times throughout the film.

It’s use throughout, in my opinion, really gives it a graphic novel/storybook sort of feel, such as when coupled with Luke lowering himself below Kylo’s attacking lightsaber or the emphasis on Finn, Poe and Rey when Luke is talking about the war not being over, the rebellion being reborn and not being the last Jedi, respectively.

There was a brief moment of slow-mo as they whipped their lightsabers out.

Lots of still and quiet moments with Luke and Rey in which reminded me of a movie called"The Warriors Way" The Warrior runs away and hides because he couldn't carry out a mission. Not the actual story reminds me of it but in how he carries on with life not getting into the fight anymore until he has to.
