Tired of this foolishness. Male friendship does not have to= GAY. Nothing wrong with gay but I think if they want to make it an actual thing. The writers producers will make it more clear then a good friendship between dudes. I guess Star Wars has not featured a close friendship between female characters yet so no one has placed a subtext on that, but I doubt people would jump to the same conclusions because women are allowed to be chummy without a romance being implied. I guess we will see what happens in future films.

Why should it be the new "normal"? I have no problem with gay people, but have you ever looked at the numbers? They make up a small minority of people.

Just to throw my hand into this, I don't think gender roles or sexuality have much importance with Rogue One. With the rest of Star Wars, for sure, but you have aliens of all kinds, people of all colors, fighting against the Empire and make a daring attack that pays off. I can say, however, that there is a slightly political tone, in the sense that the Rebels embrace diversity and are strengthened by it, and the Empire only in humans, and a religious/spiritual one, as Jedha is a home of the Jedi, many Kaibur crystals are found there, and Edwards said it's design is based off of Middle Eastern architecture and a blend of clothing inspired by the tree major religions that have ties to the location. Sexuality and gender seem to be on the backburner. If they turn out to be gay, or not, it will be a reveal in other material. If they wanted to make it clear that they were a couple (Baze and Chirrut), I feel they would have made it more obvious.

While I don't think sexuality has any importance between Chirrut and Baze's friendship, I'm very confused by people who claim it has no place in Star Wars at all. Seems to me that there have been plenty of couples in Star Wars, and their love has begotten some other very important characters.

The point then is, if we have heterosexual couples, why not some same sex ones as well? It's not like we'd be seeing anything more graphic (luckily we were spared from the "Luke and Leia-making" scenes in the PT) and it can be important for art to reflect life. Like it or not, same sex couples exist, and for a gay Star Wars fan to see someone with that one thing (that they may even be ashamed or scared of) in common with a character they like, that might just bring a little more happiness to the world. No reason to hate on the potential of it, just that in this movie I don't think it was the case.

People need to see themselves and need representation is all. That's the only reason it's important. I don't think that was clear in the movie and I only saw them as close. If someone wants to relate to them that way, let them. Just as you may relate to things. It's only a part of a person anyway.

I never saw Finn and Poe as a couple. It was obvious to me that Finn had strong feelings for Rey. I mean Klyo escapes with Rey, Finn almost had a nervous breakdown. Finn doing everything he could to rescue Rey.

I think some people thought that because Oscar has a flirty attitude with the character. Heck, you can argue he was flirting with Kylo Ren if you want. It was more on the Poe side, giving him his jacket and all that.

It doesn't bother me, cuz they aren't.

I was more critical of how "forced" (pun not intended) their relationship was. I mean, within the first 5 minutes of meeting each other, Poe renames Finn!? What the hell is that!? Why wouldn't Finn say "ok, then your name is goober now". I found it forced and weird...

A lot of relationships seemed forced in Star Wars. People know each other a day, and they are devastated when they die, but the foster parents that raised them, doesn't phase them.

The Finn name bugged me a bit because it's a black man being given a name by someone.

er...Finn didn't have a name and had probably never thought about it. what was he supposed to say? no, don't call me Finn, i want to be George instead?

i think the FinnPoe thing is kinda silly because other than Poe taking Finn under his wing a little (and just naturally being a sexy beast), it's clear Finn is interested in Rey.

Baze and Chirrut? it's wide open season! call it how you want it. hahaha

But Finn's only name was his ID Number. He had no name. Just said, FN-2187.
Poe, refusing to call him essentially a slave number, called him Finn. If someone showed me human decency for the first time in, well, ever...I'd be okay if they called me JarJar.

As for a black man being given a name...really? His being black is inconsequential to that specific thing about the character in honesty.
Would you rather they call him FN-2187 the entire movie?

It just bothered me a little because of well, slave names and such. That's all.

...but it was the exact opposite of that.
He was freed from being a slave and the guy just gave him a name. Finn wasn't obliged to keep it but chose to because it was the first sign of respect he was given.

I thought Star Wars and Star Trek fans were beyond black / white issues, but like I've said, since I was a young boy, it would only end when alien life forms ( most likely violent ) are discovered, then the human race will see each other as one, and come together as one. New found prejudices and racism will go toward the Aliens.

Yes, I agree, and it was presented well, it's just well, the actor happened to be black and it made me feel some kind of way.

If inter-species mingling is okay....I don't think anyone cares about same sex couples or gender roles in SW. Lol
