So, what's the deal with StarWars.com?

There's a fricking new Star Wars episode coming in a mere 408 days give or take, and there's nothing on it on the official site. No news, no interviews, no hint that a seventh episode is being created as we drool in anticipation. I am basically wondering why this is so? Before The Phantom Menace, I remember there was a lot of hype built beforehand through cast interviews, officially sanctioned image "leaks" (for example, Star Wars Insider featuring a cover with a shot of two Ep1 Jawas - not much, but something).

So why are they so quiet now? Why does going to starwars.com feel as if there's no Episode VII in production?! Do they want to avoid a backlash in case it tanks (artistically, not economically) like I-III? Are they secretly preparing a total makeover in which VII becomes the focus? Are the peeps who maintain the official website not interested in sharing a little bit of Episode VII fun?

    Thoughts?

I feel that by now we should be eagerly clicking our way to starwars.com daily to see if there's some fun nugget or tidbit or whatever, but yeah the site is practically dead. Fan-run websites devoted to Star Wars are generally more informative and exciting. What gives?

It's probably ol' JJ's mystery box. I bet they will revamp the site in all it's Episode 7 glory closer to the release date or at least when the official trailer hits the web.

I went over there now, and really, there's nothing on the main page that screams EPISODE VII IS COMING!!! I find this so strange (and frustrating). So, yeah, I guess you might be right about that mystery box. Man I really don't like mystery boxes.

I don't mind mystery boxes, I almost like them because I don't want to spoil too much in advance. But the official web doesn't even show us the box, let alone the box contents!!

I think they are focused more on Rebels now, in six months they will ramp up the Episode VII stuff, I hope.

I whole heartedly agree. It is so odd to me that there isn't like... at least an official pod cast from the ep 7 set saying like.. "Lets introduce the guy who polishes the chrome on R2's head to find out what chemical gives him that droid fresh look" or "I'm the assistant prep cook here in catering on the set of star wars 7 and would YOU like to know what the sound techs like to eat while filming?"

Please Disney give us SOMETHING. A blurry shot of a bearded mark hamil in costume. A close up look at the back of a storm trooper. SOMEthing....

I'd imagine once the trailer hits, and the title is revealed... they'll have a dedicated area for Episode VII ever present on the homepage.

It's likely already designed and approved, just waiting until they pull the trigger on the trailer.

Does anyone recall how soon starwars.com received the trailer? Didn't the meh film that had it enjoy an exclusive... At least for its opening weekend before the official site had it up? (Cannot stop Duel of Fates from playing in my head nonstop now)

I think you're correct but the Internet has changed a lot since then. Stuff gets leaked BEFORE the release. I'm looking at you age of ultron.

I'll see you that and raise you this: marketing departments know the word 'leak' generally helps a trailer see more traffic than releasing it officially. Didn't it make for a cute tweet from Marvel with a Damn you, hydra? Which gets people talking even more. Recently Mike Tyson also 'accidentally' tweeted out a link to his private screening pilot of his new Adult Swim cartoon. These are very controlled leaks.

"Controlled leak" is such a great combination of words. I did a controlled leak earlier today before going off to work.

Anyway, with the news of a teaser trailer possibly happening sooner than anticipated, could this mean the "silence" at sw.com will be broken?
One day BAM! the site is plastered in EpVII stuff, with the teaser as focal point.
They have to begin releasing something soon.

I really didn't expect it to be so quiet around the production of Star Wars: Episode VII: The Dark Legacy. People in the real world (at least in my beardneck of the woods) have no idea the saga is continuing next year. That's so weird!

I think its a monumental error on the part of marketing. If they posted anything... and I mean anything... the colour slip Daisy wore today... whatever... everybody here would be on that site daily. The chance to advertise, hell even cross advertise Rebels to the ones looking for VII news that might not have given it a nod.. ANYTHING...

    Wasted opportunity...

Yeah I totally agree. It feels almost like a different faction that doesn't want to be involved or associated with Episode VII, which is weird.

i agree, and there are un-doubtedly some very twitchy nervous executives at disney's marketing department.

they have clearly made a decision that the easiest way to keep the cat in the bag - is to not let anyone see the bag, touch the bag, talk about the bag or even acknowledge it's existence.

still a year and 6 odd weeks out... have no fear peeps. i would guess that once the advertising juggernaut (and i dont use that word lightly) starts rolling... the silence will be long forgotten. :)

It's the deep breath before the plunge :) By this time next year we'll be flooded with Star Wars live-action news (clips, photos, tie-in literature, soundtrack, toys, live-action minisodes?), possibly some of us will be sick of it by then. Others will be clamoring for Episode VIII spoilers or new intel on the 2016 spin-off movie (or new cartoon ventures if Rebels ends next year which is possible if it was only ever intended as something to bridge TCW and EP7 in terms of giving audiences a temporary point of diversion).

Patience, and all things will come to pass :) And don't gorge too soon because we don't know exactly how large the rest of the meal over the coming years is going to get...

I can practically hear Gandalf soothing me :)
Though I am immune to getting Star Wars - sick, if the last 32 years are anything to go by.

Yep. Calm before the storm. The Disney machine knows what it's doing and has certainly has numbers to justify their messaging strategy. Also, this lull helps sites like this one and MSW.... So careful what you (sith) witch for.

You would think that they would want traffic to their site. BUUUTTT, they may realize that they can't or won't provide what sites like ours does -- rumors and speculation and occasional leaks. Besides, they don't NEED the revenue or the traffic and all these sites like ours are keeping Episode VII front and center int he public consciousness. In other words, we're doing their job for them! LOL :p
