So What's with the Disney Slave Leia Shenanigans?

Would Disney be making the right choice to phase out the Slave Leia image?

I've read a couple articles and forums about Disney supposedly phasing out the "slave Leia" costume in merchandising and comics. I don't know how much is accurate and how far this "ban" is going. Does this just mean they won't make any more toys with the costume? As far as comics go, they wouldn't need to showcase the costume too much anyhow since it is only referenced in the Jabba scene in ROTJ-and most of the comics feature other storylines and times before or after the OT. However...what happens if they release a new graphic novel version of the OT. How will they present the Jabba's Palace scene?! Will it make sense for the repulsive character of Jabba to have her dressed in modest Jedi robes? And....if they start with this, what else will the Imperials "phase out" from the OT? Would they go as far to ban the costume itself at conventions or even remove or change ROTJ? A long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away is starting to feel like 1984....

Personally, I believe that being "threatened" by a gold bikini would not make me feel like a strong and empowered woman. If anything, I think women have chosen to be empowered by it. I've since girls of all shapes and sizes choosing to wear the costume and enjoying it. I know Carrie Fisher wasn't a fan, but the iconic costume has been embraced by many female fans, including myself.

Certainly, there was and will be elements of Star Wars that might "offend" someone. In fact, I HOPE there will be elements that offend others and myself...because that's art! But really, what are they going to do next? Replace all the toy blasters and comic images of them with walkie talkies?

    Here is that:
When Leia was captured and enslaved by Jabba the Hutt she was put in chains, degraded to wear a dancers outfit and sit next to her captor.
But against all the odds and shaming she endured, she killed Jabba, restored her dignity/honor/personhood and escaped while wearing the same costume she was put in. This is a message. Leia overcame all this dispite all this, and what she was wearing and went further with her metamorphosis on Endor where she was in a Rebel Soldiers gear fighting the Empire.

So who is actually objectifying Slave Leia? The father and the SJW´s or the common or extreme Star Wars Fan? Sure...Slave Leia is hot. But it has context.

I should go buy one and dress in it in defiance. ;) ...And then get a lifetime star wars ban from Disney.

It was a dumb decision. Now what? They will release a special edition with Leia using a princess dress?

I absolutely agree. I imagine Disney will portray her in the Boushh outfit without the helmet (lame) and therefore the powerful context of the scene will be erased (as well as adding to how disgusting Jabba is.) Luke and Han did not rescue Leia from Jabba while she was wearing that outfit. She took down one of the most notorious and repulsive crime lords in the galaxy with the chains he used to enslave her. Yeah, she looks hot in the outfit and there is opportunity for objectification. But the fact she overcame her captor and the obstacles of the scene means there is more to the costume than sexy Leia.

What I would like to know is that if Disney is going to go on with that stupid decision because of those lame reasons, what will become of Oola?

Her costume was way more risque than Leia's ever was to a point that you can even see her nipples clearly and this not being only in the oops boob scene. As a matter of fact, what will happen to most Twi'Lek females that are portrayed as slaves in SW? Are they gonna erase them too?
How about Diva Shaliqua? She has the same type of costume so are they going to erase her from TFM?

Then I guess my chances of ever having a Jess figure are also going down the drain right?

That argument is really foolish but I hardly blame Disney as much as I blame Carrie Fisher who's stupid comments began the whole situation in the first place.

I don't think they're going to actually erase what's already there. I take it as them just not producing any action figures/costumes/etc in the future.

In the context of the film, the outfit works. The problem I have with it, and I think what others do too, is how Leia in that outfit has become objectified by fans (and even non-fans) outside of the context of the film.

As a kid, Slave Leia did more to empower women to me than objectify them in any way.

Yes there is a tinge of sexism to it from a certain point of view, but it had good intentions. It also added a little bit more eroticism into Star Wars along with Kasdan's Han/Leia subplot in Empire, and that is one of the things which keeps the original trilogy so grounded.

Disney just need to reel it in a little bit with the female empowerment, I mean look at Frozen - all the female characters are goddesses and all the males are useless clowns.. it goes both ways Disney.

If you give a slave outfit to one princess,

    beach.jpg

You have to give one to all the Princesses.

Seriously though, I was pleased back in the day when Carrie drew attention to the industry and feeling pressured to starve herself.

Anyways, I wonder what the deal is about Disney and the outfit, and what these Carrie comments are about?

Edit: Oh, I see. SWNN has this, on this, with this...
