Yeah, it is an interesting question.

So the fact that a movie is a story rip-off of a previous entry can't be the only criterion.

I mean, this is clearly a sequel, but I can see peoples point of view that they basically told the same story to reintroduce it to a new audience, which is essentially the purpose of a reboot.

I wouldn't call it a reboot so much as a bridge film. It needed to be done to set the stage for the future. What really got me was how good the new cast cast is. The one thing that was a fail right away in the prequels where the choices for Anakin. The kid was okay, but Hayden just sucked and he didn't improve either from episode to episode. It was like what's his face that tried to pull off being Indiana Jones kid in Chrsytal Skull. This also didn't come off looking cartoonish. The CGI has improved since the prequels, but it wasn't overdone here either which was awesome. It looked real. All of it.

Some outsider perspective... my sister who saw the film & is a fan but not like us... she said she doesn't know what to think because she's still in shock about Han solo. Soft you say? Tell that to the guy who just had a light saber burn through his heart!

Star Wars THE FORCE AWAKENS is really a Tour de Force.

IT IS a soft reboot.... it needed to be... now that there are 5 other movies in the backlog.

BUT.... at the same time, it had to be not only a soft reboot but also a SEQUEL to ROTJ.

That is why I DON'T CARE about the approach of having elements from the trilogy that worked (THE OT) into one movie, twist and mix it a little bit, so they can build on it... and my god, they succeeded!

Not only it is aiming for serious box office records, but the critics are in the parade this time... and most (I SAY MOST) of the fans.

It's a TOUR DE FORCE. Not a remake.... a soft reboot of the franchise...and, IMHO, the best sequel they could get to ROTJ.

And by managing to create some strong new characters, they have enough fuel for the completion of this trilogy of films.

People are complaining about Starkiller being Death Star 3.0..... The "Super Duper Weapon" is not the soul of the movie....characters are.

What was the MAIN THREAT of Empire Strikes Back again?

    A Character.

    In ROTJ?

Not the 3rd Death Star.... come on.... It wasn't completed and The Emperor was the one feeding the Rebels plans of his superweapon.

    Again.... it was a Character!

These movies are about The Force, not superweapons and laser beams.

I really thought it would be a reboot, or remake, based on some of the early reviews. But I don't think so after having seen the movie.

There were a lot of parallels with ANH, but it was more the feel and look of the movie- not the actual story, which was very different in my opinion.

@Pastor Barndog and @AlienofDoom had good points about the use of the original cast and the fact that one had to have seen the OT, and really even the PT, to understand the whole story. For example, had we not seen the OT we wouldn't even know what the Force actually is, that Ben/Kylo is likely Obi-Wan's namesake, or that the melted mask belonged to his grandfather.

It's true that we were dropped into the middle of a GFFA with ANH, and had to figure out things as we went, but there's too much here that we wouldn't be able to figure out without some prior knowledge of that universe. Like getting into a new TV series, you're going to have missed some if you don't watch from the beginning, but that does vary from series to series and even between episodes. I guess I see this as more of a lull in the overall story arc while new people are introduced, things have to be explained to them a little bit, and then the story moves on.

Agreed (except I hope you can still enjoy the movie if you haven't seen Star Wars or you don't really know about it! Or else my sister might not enjoy it as much ). I consider the movie to be more of clearing the board than a soft reset.

Not at all. The Force Awakens is very much a continuation of the saga.

Sure a person can still enjoy the movie if they don't know everything that came before. I literally never watch TPM and do just fine with AOTC and the rest of the movies. ;) Your sis will enjoy it- but she will like it even better once she watches the other movies, too.

Probably this one was just a getting back on tracks.

It looked everybody on this movie was really afraid of getting compared to the Sequels (just consider the last reactions of Adam Driver and Harrison Ford when questioned to compare TFA to PT, even came out an interview stating GLucas for delivering big mistakes doing the PT). It really looked like the production and creative teams just wanna pick up were the OT stoped and get some of that inocent Action/Fun movie and don't tried to pull something more on this.

It's a great movie, a really great movie, despite falling a bit short on the story in my opinion (they just kept it similar to OT and were really afraid of messing that up), not a reboot but a Cyclic Continuation, since it introduced new elements with the same development plot.
