I doubt that they won't use an orchestral score. I'm pretty sure it'll be. Powell is a great orchestrator. But it'll probably contain many musical firsts for the series.

    One which I fear:
It COULD be the first film without the Force Theme. I know it was used for the trailer, but narratively, it might not make much sense. We'll see. I any case, it'll surely be the film with less Force Theme iterations, beating Rogue One.

Good call, the lack of the Force theme could be a major first. I think it shouldn't be used, unless there's a clear reference (which is unlikely, given the premise of the movie).

But I'm really curious if Powell used the Falcon's theme from TFA. That would be cool!

I'd be okay with Falcon related themes.
Those include even The Rebel Fanfare and the Main Titles (Williams used it for Solo and the Falcon in VIII). And I'd be VERY happy if they include a brief reference to The Asteroid Field.
But I'd love for The Force Theme to make at least one appearance. I don't want to break its record after all.

    Awesome post.

Maybe my overconfidence in fanservice is my weakness, but I think we'll see C3PO and R2. I mean, it's the underworld yeah, but it's after the prequels, so a Bail cameo would make a lot of sense (but not interacting with Han).

Also, if the Empire is in the movie (which is) expect some kind of Vader reference.

And seeing how Rogue One used Darth and Leia in such an amazing way, I expect Boba AND Jabba to pop up at some point (Paul Bettany's character may be related to Jabba).

Heck, Jabba looking for Han would be the perfect way to end the movie.

Then there would be a fairly significant plot connection but somehow I doubt that's what the heist is about, not that I know what it's about anyway.

    4. No appearance of R2 and 3PO... I fear that's true, and these are their stand-ins...

That’s a possibility but for me it would make more sense if this was a Kyber Shipment for the Stardust project that this gang hijack while being unaware of just how important this shipment is for the Empire & maybe could also explain why the Empire wants it back so baldly. This would then tie in with Saga but Beckets Crewe would be unaware of it.

I know. Which is ridiculous, since YouTube is filled with that same footage.

You mean looking for him after he dumps his cargo? Then no, this film should end years before ANH, not just before like Rogue One.

Now, ending it with Han meeting Jabba for the first time would be nice. Or maybe, with his first visit to the Mos Eisley Cantina, complete with an older Ewan/Ben cameo (I know. Too much fanservice, but right now I'm in a fan overdose, so make some allowances, please).

    THIS.

I'd love for the Kessel Run theme to include motifs from The Asteroid Field. Oh man, that would be great!

As much as I love the Force theme...I feel like it's been over-used in all three Disney-Star Wars movies so far. It shows up all over The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, where it used to be used more sparingly. And in Rogue One, it was kinda weird hearing it used when Bail Organa appears. I also would have preferred the Leia theme for Leia's brief moment. I'd be happy if Solo gave it some time off.

    But that's just me. ;)

I agree with you. The force theme and also Binary Sunset is overused in the new movies. I kinda have the feeling Williams "lost" his touch. Don't get me wrong the score of the ST is still great (especially Rey's theme), but it doesn't compare to the OT and definitely not to the PT.

Having just studied the matter thoroughly, I can tell you, it's NOT used all over The Force Awakens. In fact, it's one of the films where it appears less. It appears in TFA exactly the same amount of times than it does in TESB and TPM.

It's true it appears a lot in The Last Jedi. But it's nothing new. Indeed, it only appears one more time than it does in ROS and three more times than it does in ANH. Taking in consideration that ANH is the shortest film and TLJ is the longest, it's not even that much, proportionally.

I do enjoy it's uses in Rogue One (which has the fewest of any film to date). I don't have a thematic problem with it appearing with Bail, since he's one of the last connections to the Jedi Order, and his actions in this film are what is about to bring them back to the fold.

So yeah, you might feel it's been overused in the Disney era, but it's only becasue it's been used a lot on the trailers, not on the three films themselves. The honor still belongs, by far, to the Original Trilogy, because of its strong showing in both ANH and ROTJ.

As I've just said, it's not overused in the new movies, but I should also agree that Binary Sunset is The Force Theme. It's just one of its many arrangements, and it has only appeared twice.

I don't think he's lost his touch at all. Score experts are finding his recent work very, very intriguing and exceptional. Casual viewers, I've noticed, not so much. But maybe it's a matter of time.

Hope you find the post informative!

The Last Jedi's music is comparable to the prequels, to me. But I guess that's off-topic. Haha.

Solo will be the first Star Wars film where the force does not get used.

So my initial guesses were not too far off......let's talk about the actual movie firsts:

SOLO is the first Star Wars movie to:

    1. NOT start in space.

    2. Not show a Jedi nor Sith in bodily form

    3. Not have a light saber battle, nor even show a traditional light saber

    4. Not have either R2 or 3PO

    5. Not show any Rebel/Resistance/Empire/FO strategy sessions

    6. Not have anyone say, or attempt to say (before being cut off), IGABFAT

    7. Not have the term "The Force" used, at all

    8. Use a John Williams theme in the movie (breaking the 4th wall)

    9. Use the "A long time ago" blue font to describe the opening
