Starkiller is like the use of other Empire motifs. They are saying "Look we even have a Death Star."

I think the wish for new ships will be greatly met in the next film. Rian was said to be watching lots of old war films. We just watched them destroy the seat of government and the republic fleet and they lost the Death . . . I mean Star Killer. So both the Republic (who will now rally to the Resistance) will try and rebuild a military, ask for help from member systems which means lots of diverse ships. The 1st Order is in the same boat. They must deal with fighting throughout the galaxy the will need help from all those former empire sympathizers and those who think the Republic will loose will be rallying to the 1st Order.

 

I mentioned those earlier in the thread... I'm not a fan of those new fighter designs. Interesting that they went to the trouble of designing them but we never saw any other new fighters, really.

 

I'd like to argue a couple of points. I guess I'll start wth point 1 here.

For those who say military designs haven't changed much in 40 years, you are mostly right. But here are some counterexamples:

Nothing like this was in use 40 years ago to my knowledge.

Ships have changed too.
And then there's drones...


Time advances and designs change.

For those saying that it makes sense for the Resistance to not have a lot of different types of ships, I'm not sure I agree. The Resistance would have to scrape up ships from wherever they could get them. This would mean getting some from the Republic fleet but also probably getting others from sympathec systems or organizations. I would imagine this would mean a whole array of hodgepodge fighters and capital ships, much like the Alliance fleet in RoTJ. Now that the Republic/Resistance fleets are destroyed I expect this to be even more likely moving forward into Ep8.

 

There will be small jumps in technology just like we have small jumps in technology, but one thing you do have to remember is that at a time of relative peace, the war machine stops raging in any society. So after ROTJ, the war machine probably stopped raging for a while and there have been minor jumps in technology. However, I suspect we may see a handful of new ships. Just, with the history of SW Universe, I don't expect to see like a whole movie full of new ships. Maybe tho, maybe.

Yeah... sometimes production runs go into wild places. Its really incredible how much art and design can be produced that never sees the light of day. I'm somewhat under the impression that there is still a huge amount of Ralph McQuarrie concept artwork that has never been published and still sits in the LFL archives! The unused ship designs might not be my favorites, but it does show that they thought about it. I expect we'll see some new designs in Ep. 8 as more worlds would, in theory, join the Resistance and lend their support... hopefully we'll get some more of those beautiful Mon Calamari cruisers!

 

I'm sure alterations were made... but I remember reading that George Lucas designed the Calamari ships! (In my art of Return of the Jedi book it credits him for the design?)

Keep in mind the technology gets used long before anyone finds out about it. I'm willing to bet stealth craft were used in the early 80's.

The U2 Spy plane was in use for something like 10 or 12 years until the public knew about it.
