Hey no worries, just thought you might want to see some opinions already stated and keep the discussion all in one place. I agree there need to be way more new ship designs in ep 8!

Do I believe there should be new spaceships?

No...not really.

Fine....Add a Prius and a fuel-economic transport freighter....if you really want to... You can never replace the muscle though.

This doesn't really concern me so much. On Earth our technology for space/flying craft is but 100 years old. So 30 years to us we would want to see some advancement as it's roughly 33% of time consumed inventing new things. That's a large chunk.

In TGFFA you have to assume flying technology is in the thousands, maybe millions of years in advancement and research. 30 years later to that isn't much at all and becoming more advanced to where it is noticeable would be unlikely I would assume.

Kind of Like Yoda. He is 900 years old. The next film comes out and he is 930 with gray hair and a gray beard. Doesn't make sense. Now if Yoda were 30 years old and then we see him at 60 and he has gray hair and a gray beard it makes sense.

Get what I'm saying? New space ships are cool but in a civilization so advanced it has to peter out sooner or later.... if not go backward due to limited recourses no longer available.

Army Infantry here...we use the M4...ever seen an M16 from Vietnam? it's the same....with a shorter barrel. Same principle...only slightly modified over the years.

I think they did justice to the proper aging of equipment, as the X-Wing and Tie Fighters are the same....with slight modifications. It's not just trying to pull "nostalgia" ratings from ignorant people...that I have seen people nitpick and complain about....it's simply logical.

Spaceships are nice and all, but they were never things that drew me to the series. It has always been the music, characters and story. Everything else is there to facilitate these aspects.

 

Beaten by the past couple posts but it seemed to make sense that the Resistance was making do with surplus/beater x-wings and one or more of those landers.

 

The Rebellion always used whatever ships it could get its hands on, hence the beat-up old snubfighters they used in the Battle of Yavin. It sounds like the Resistance is in a similar place, operating outside of the Republic's military (and military budget!)

My understanding of how the First Order was envisioned is that they armed themselves in secret from whatever Outer Rim hidey-hole they grew out of. Their gear is updated, but still based largely on older Empire designs. I see this as being partly a matter of deliberate symbolism on the part of the First Order leadership, to make it clear that the Empire was never truly defeated.

(Yes, all of this does track back to J.J. Abrams' desire to visually tie TFA to the original films, but it doesn't require much of a logical leap to justify it within the story.)

 

They should have had new ships alongside the old ships.

 

I would say cool spaceships was one small part of MANY things that drew me to Star Wars. That's why it doesn't even qualify as a problem to me, but I do hope we get inventive new designs in future movies.

Come on, are people really saying that they DON'T like all the cool designs from Return of the Jedi?

 

I'm not a big fan of the Independence Day ship... far too sleek & organic. Most good Star Wars Ship designs are based on simple geometric shapes or designed to look like everyday objects (Boba Fett's ship was designed after a street lamp). For the most part, the designers said they tried to stick with ships you could draw with just a few lines.

While I'm excited to see new ship designs... nothing that the designers came up with reflect the aesthetic of the OT designs (I'm not sure if you guys saw the new designs like the U-Wing & things like that... very "meh"). Without people like Joe Johnston or McQuarrie I'm very concerned we might not get anything as imaginative as an SSD or B wing again I felt like Kylo's ship & the republic transport were very boring.

There was a new ship in the concept art I really dug though... it was an early design for Kylo's ship I think... it looked like a big tie fighter but with a WW2 style cockpit/ nose.

Doug Chiang did some good stuff in the Art of Star Wars book... I dug his pirate ship designs & a few other things.

There is just something about that baby boomer generation of artists... I don't know what it is. Like where is this generation's H.R. Giger? Ron Cobb?

 

Regarding the OP, the lack of any "new" designs didn't really bother me. In one instance, it was Disney playing it safe --- bringing back the old horses we know and love in an attempt to avoid what turned off some people to the PT (everything so clean and fancy!).

On the other hand though, it represents a logical evolution of already proven designs and makes sensible improvements to them. Particularly if we consider it from the perspective of them being the lesser powers, fringe factions away from the greater power that should be the New Republic. We never really saw the New Republic's ships -- just whatever hand-me-down designs a ragtag resistance would be using.

It'd make sense if he just got it in his head that beards letting your hair go are cool.
