So, I just finished reading Tarkin.

In my eyes, this book represented a chance for a veteran EU author to pass the torch to a new generation of authors. Working with a beloved character like Tarkin all the novel needed was a solid plot, political intrigue, military strategy, and one solid action piece.

The only word I can describe my feelings is "void". This book has a SW skin but none of its heart. Just like Kenobi it completely avoids using the character's strengths. Instead it indulges in describing in fine detail Peter Kushing's stage mannerism, a dull and fabricated origin story with nods to the Clone Wars TV show.

So far the EU has nothing to offer for a SW fan but rushed, mediocre page fillers.
So disappointed, moving on to Sith Lords. Let's see what that one's all about.

This is actually my favorite book of the new canon. Yes, I liked it even more than the Lords of the Sith. I recognize that the style might not be for everyone, Luceno is wordy, but I enjoyed the book very much.

Rather than rehash, here is my review:

I don't have an issue with Luceno's wording. It's the ideas and how they're executed. I couldn't see Tarkin's past add much to his military career as a tactician and Emperor's enforcer. I understand the analogy with the safari hunter's calculated mind but it's one thing to read the animal's tracks and set traps and to wage military campaigns.

An origin story is fine as long as it suits the premise of the novel. In this case the flashbacks just fill up pages but don't really build character I saw in Ep. IV.

Most disappointing was the lack of SW atmosphere. Since Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm they have pushed the "original trilogy" content so I assumed the new line of EU novels would have the same grit. So far none of the new novels seem to capture it.

My view may seem a bit harsh. I do compare the popular media "books" with classic sci-fi literature I read. Just because it's based on a movie doesn't mean it can't have solid literary foundation. Plenty of Legends novels did that in the past. I don't understand why it's so challenging for Disney to hire authors that can deliver an authentic SW experience.

My question is, who the hell signs off on these juvenile attempts at storytelling?

The Tarkin novel should make an excellent SW anthology movie about Tarkin. Especially his exploits with the Outland Regions Security Force fleet and later years with Vader defending the Death Star construction against a Rebel Faction Fleet.

    Potential Spoiler---

Thoughts about the "Sith shrine" the Jedi Temple on Coruscant was built on?? (pwned)
I keep wondering how important this will be for setting up some (if any) future events in the new canon?

Grand Moff Tarkin has somehow risen to the top as my favorite Star Wars character. I had always hoped that he would have been the visible face of evil in the prequels while the Emperor worked on turning Anakin from the shadows, but alas that would have meant less bad guy action figures to merchandize and my wishes did not come true. So, I really looked forward to this book wanting to see Tarkin finally get center stage.

The novel was a nice time slice of Tarkin's life and the book did set up Tarkin's back story and the dynamic of the Palpatine/Vader/Tarkin relationship, but like all the other new official canon books it felt like the storyteller was being held back for some reason.

I suspect that reason is because the story group can't allow anything to be set in stone until TFA is released or perhaps worse, until they finish the sequel trilogy. So yeah, I was a little bit let down. But in comparison to Heir to the Jedi's treatment of Luke it was a solid standalone story.

My rating of the new canon novels so far is:
    A New Dawn
    Tarkin
    Lords of the Sith
    Heir to the Jedi

A New Dawn has a lot of good reviews among the SW fans, and it was released this month in Brazil too. I think I will buy both.

I read half of A New Dawn, didn't like it. I'll try to give it one more chance, usually always do (unfortunately that doesn't make the writing any better, lol)

    So far I like...

    Lords of the Sith
    Tarkin
    Dark Disciple
    A New Dawn
    Heir to the Jedi

    For comics...

    Darth Vader
    Kanan The Last Padawan
    Star Wars
    Lando
    Princess Leia

Absolutely cannot wait to get my hands on Aftermath novels and Shattered Empire. I'm really hoping at some point they tell some stories about what Luke, Leia, and Lando were doing the year between ROTJ.

Lando trying to infiltrate Jabba's palace would make a great comic. Luke learning to use the Force on his own, as well as Leia dealing with justifying Han's rescue to the Rebel hierarchy. What if the Rebel Alliance never wanted her and Luke to risk their necks for Han Solo? That could a whole new spin on things and set up the internal conflicts Leia may be dealing with in TFA.

Finally got around to reading Tarkin, and I agree it was lacking some quintessential SW motifs, I really enjoyed it for a few reasons
    1) the background it gives to Vader and Tarkin's relationship
    2) Tarkin's origin story
    3) Tarkin's relationship with the Emporer

but i did find myself zoning out while reading a few times...

I enjoyed it, not my favorite Star Wars book or anything but a fun read. It did lack some "heart", as the OP said, but so does Governor Tarkin. He's a cold-blooded man and I think the tone of the book reflected that. But that also means you don't feel much for the character, but Tarkin isn't a character I necessarily want to sympathize with or understand. I thought the book did a good job of creating an origin story went a long way in explaining how he became such a hard man but didn't really try to make excuses for his actions or turn him into a sympathetic character. My main problem was just that both the story of his childhood and the "present" adulthood were both kind of anti-climactic. Particularly his childhood, the Carrion Spike story ended up not being worth the hype. I thought the story was going to be something insanely cold-blooded like glassing his home planet during the Clone Wars or something. But instead he outsmarted some monkeys. And I didn't think the Mad Max ending was as all that great. But even though I was expecting more bang near the end I was very entertained and it kept me interested from start to finish.
