I loved the NJO; there was a real sense of devastation and hopelessness, and while the series was long and followed quite a few different characters, I liked that it introduced new ideas and concepts, and wasn't merely a retread of the New Republic vs. Imperial Remnant story.

Your mileage may vary, but even though the Vong were so outside of what we'd normally consider to be "Star Wars-y", I don't think fantasy should be constrained.

    Absolutely.

First off they would need to take some notes from how the Legacy and Invasion comics drew them, more inhuman... less clunky.

I think their relationship to the force would have to be totally re-evaluated... not an absense of the force, more like a dark pit of dispair... when looked at through the force, a vong should feel like "the place the force goes to die"

A species sovile the force abhors them... not a dark side, a sickness almost... btu still able to be sensed.

Oh man, I couldn't do it. I read the Vong books and it was hard for me to get immersed in the story. It just seemed like a "Cylon vs. Human" type of thing that was almost like a "Fantasy Wannabe Star Wars novel". Maybe I'm too rutted in the typical SW storyline configuration, but it seemed like the Vong were a hard left turn from.....the path.

You wouldnt have to bring the Story with it.

If I was writing the Vong... I would take heavy influence from Alien and PRedator, and crank up the horror elements of the species a bit.

If you are going to make them difficult to detect in the force (I wouldnt make it impossible) take advantage of that for gods sake...

I'm personally not interested in a SW horror film. I read "Death Troopers" and that was enough for me. Now that being said, I could see the introduction of the Vong (I read the story) as an invading alien force, but with them being absent from the force (which is a foundation element to the Star Wars saga) essentially renders the Force inert and useless in the story...thus to me is not "Star Wars".

We have horror flicks...please not in Star Wars.

The thing that attracted me to Star Wars in the first place wasthat it was such a huge universe and so diverse and varied that any type of story could be told within its walls. That the characters would have many experiences, I always found this to be necessary for the characters... especially Jedi Characters... wisdom comes from experience after all.

Ifthe Jedi only ever fight the Sith. Then they arent doign their job as protectors of the people.

If the rebels/republic only ever fight the empire, then what was the point of their victor?

Also concerning their "absence in the force" yeah no way in hell would I ever do that in any rebooted form of the vong... I would certainly give them a "lessened" presence in the force, and their presence in the force would be like a sick dark pit of agony... Make it so it almost hurts to detect them through the force. Stemming from their rejection of the force, not of them being severed from the force...

Everyone is supposed to be force sensitive to a degree, very few a sensitive enough to use it... but perhaps you dont need a Strong presence in the force to try and push out what liittle you have in you (it wouldn't be successful of course, they would still have a presence in the force it would just be... tainted...)

This is another thing that I think needs to be done more often, different groups with different relationships tothe force... Dark and Light is good and all, but showing there are different approachs and beliefs is not bad.

Of course, I would have brought the Nagai back before I brought the Vong back, the Nagai have a bit more potential in Star Wars, fit the tone a bit better but still feel alien. You gotta take baby steps with introducing more alien threats, you cant just jump into the Vong...

If it was my choice, every season of rebels would have 2 episodes dedicated to Expanded Universe threats, Hapans, Nagai, Vong, Ssi-Ru, Yevetha, Chiss... All of them updated and retooledto better fit Star Wars.... (Hapans and Chiss would need the least tweaks probably.... )

The culmination of this would be therealization that if the Rebellion ever succeeds that it would inherit all the problems of the empire. Which isto say, any other rival star nation, no matter how big or small it is.

Ok see, I'd be more open to this. If the Vong were to become canon, they'd have to have a relationship with the force if even a sickly one. And yes, the Vong appearance would have to be a gradual introduction as they (presently) are a bit....acidic! :)

With the idea I have it would also make defectors like Vergere make more sense... Like Vergere would have become sick of the whole conflict of ligth and dark, and joined a group that purged itself of the force (but not really) through pain...

Personally I think that, even though it was accidental, the way threats were introduced in the EU was nearly perfect.

Generally alternating between political and force-based enemies with them getting gradually more and more alien. I was not put off by the Vong when I got into Star Wars because I read all the stuff preceding them, and thus their introduction seemed somewhat less forced...

Even then... it still felt fairly forced in a sense...

Its very evident thee were sorta... winging it with the Vong, defining them book by book. For example sometimes vong bio-tech has a presence in the force, sometimes it doesnt... there is no consistancy too it.

And biotech makes them "ahving no presence in the force" just seem so much more bullcrap, even if they had no presence in the force... THEIR LIVING ARMOR SHOULD HAVE!

    Their living projectiles, and swords...

so its just... irrelevent at that point if they are covered in living things.

Especially since the explanation implied for them not having the force is that "their sapient home planet punished them by severing their connection to the force" (they dont seem to mind, and that made everythign worse for everybody... what a greeaaaaaaaaaaaay punishment)

At least that is better than their original explanation of "the force only exists in the original galaxy" which is so groan worthy and horrible that I cannnot write all the reasons why it is dumb here.

I'm not too familiar with the Yuuzhan Vong story-line, but the concept of a group outside the Force seems interesting. Maybe they'd be able to adopt it into a "wound in the Force" like in KOTOR 2 instead of being outside the Force entirely?

They didnt know what they were doing with the whole "absent in the force" thing... they were winging it book to book and constatnly changing the rules...

Wound in the force is more logical, kind of like what I was saying...

Would be cool although it fits with the canon timeline I'm not quite sure we need a third party.

I posted this in the thread about Supreme Leader Snoke, and I thought it would be relevent to post here... Because Ireally do feel the vong got better.

    -----

To bring up the vong again, I feel like I have to drive my point in a little bit more... Here is what the popular ideas for the vong were at first.

    [IMG] [IMG]

They just look... goofy and cluttered... andthe descriptions of them werent much better. Then something happened, what I think it was... was that one of the RPG books re-imagined the vong to be a little more... Star Warsey, and a little less muppety...

I think it was this image that got the ball rolling on starting to get the vong looking better.

In Star Wars Legacy the Vong themselves werent drawn super good, but they looked better... they got a slight technological makeover. Its a subtle evolution, but they just felt better integrated into the Star Wars lore after legacy.

By the time Star Wars invasion came around, it seems like the idea of the Vong had changed very much. It almost makes me wish that Vong were introduced in comics before they were introduced in the books, because they actually had to physically create something instead of just... describing . And yes I understand that writers can create interesting worlds and creatures with text alone...

But there was no VISION for the Vong, they were just sorta... there...

So When Star Wars invasion was released, it really helped make the vong far scarier, and morestar warsey... I dont know how to describe it but.

its hard to describe, its like they went from being cartoonish bad guys... to actual alien villains. They didn't feel like "oooh I got a spooky face, look how scary I am" anymore, it felt like "I will murder you and everything you hold dear"

Its ungodly difficult to describe why this image fits better into star wars than the above ones... But it just does. Its the difference between someone pretending to have a purpose, and actually having a purpose in my opinion.

I should do an article about the Yuzhan Vong and the evolution of their design and culture in the Star Wars universse and the fan opinion... because they are fascinating...

Bottom Line, if Snoke is a vong-like alien, he better be more like the bottom ones than the top ones.

The Yuuzahn Vong should absolutely not be made canon. They are essentially Orcs, which lack the philosophical motivations of the Jedi, Sith, Rebellion, Empire or any other group within Star Wars. I'm aware that the stories need to move forward but when it comes down to it, when considering new story elements I think of it this way. If it suddenly existed in the original trilogy, would it ruin them? In case of the Vong I say yes it would. They seem to be drawn from other fantasy or sci-fi franchise that SW fans may also like, and in the void between movies many of these ill fitting elements ended up in novels and comics. We've just barely scratched the surface of the galaxy established in IV-VI, let's not jump to toss that all out the window for a weak plot device that was obviously originally created as the expanded universe ran thin on material.

An entire species painted with one broad brush is not only lazy, uninspired writing, it's vaguely imperialist in it's perspective. I don't find anything interesting about characters that are purely good or evil. It drains the story of it's ability to challenge it's audience philosophically. If the enemy is pure evil then it becomes a hollow observance of plot mechanics. Meaningless and empty.

While I don't have a problem with your dislike of the Vong(you're far from the only one ;)), your follow-up statement about entire species being painted with one brush is very inaccurate when applied to the Vong. While the leadership was indeed evil, their society was extremely complex and multilayered and far from being as one dimensional as that of the Orcs from the LotR books. There are plenty of other valid arguments that can be made for or against the merits of the Vong, but that one doesn't really hold water.

Seems too Star Trekky to me. I'm not a big fan of the Vong story line. Comics made it a little better visually, but still not a fan

I do remember that reference from Knights of the Old Republic tho, when Canderous talked about this mysterious, powerful starship that attacked mandalorians. That was pretty cool. :p
