Do you think The Force Awakens will be derivative of the OT?

I disagree with you. I think he is honest enough to admit what didn't work with his previous movies and I believe making this film has taught him alot. Star trek is an origin story and hasn't been done before so in what way is it unoriginal. Name me some current movies or recent that are so called original and I bet it has aspects like camerawork ect that has been done before. What American Director at the moment comes close to anything like David Lynch for originality at the moment? JJ has been making mainstream movies for his whole career thus far with not very good stories. Ok stories but not great stories. To me that is the one thing that has held back his creativity. When you get a great story as a director it makes you feel inspired and originality can come from that. Of course there will be a few similarities in the story or the look even with the original trilogy but it's to be expected, it's a sequel, a continuation of the story. There will be plenty more that sets it apart from the previous films I just know it. Above all I think it will be a great story told in a very imaginative and entertaining way.

David Lynch is great, but my dream candidate for anything related to Star Wars was (and still is) Joseph Kosinski. I'm still blown by Tron: Legacy (a franchise film) and am still upset that Disney cancelled Tron 3. And with Oblivion he delivered a very original film, IMHO. That's the director I would have loved to see make a new Star Wars film, but TPTB decided to use another director instead (Kosinski's favorite SW film is ESB).

I wasn't saying I'd want David Lynch directing a star wars movie no more than he would (he turned down return of the jedi) that would be too weird! I just named a director that reeks with originality. Kosinski is a great director but wouldn't say he is particulalry original. Tron Legacy was a great movie and looked stunning but with the technology we have now it seemed like a rather obvious visual progression from the original. He just knows what looks cool and I believe JJ has the same sensibilities. The only thing that sets apart mainstream movies from older ones is the advancement of technology and the application of it. when it comes down to the fundamental process of filmaking like camerawork it's all been done before and usually better. When all is said and done the only thing that can be truly unique or original about mainstream film making these days is the story the film is based on. I don't necessarily care about originality for the new star wars movie. It's a big ask from a mainstream movie. Above all I just want to be entertained in a really interesting and imaginative way. I think the last mainstream movie that to me was totally original was the first matrix movie. I might have forgotten about a more recent one so tell me.

    I will say this.
I can bet all my credits, that still the OT hardcore immature fans will always be dissatisfied by anything that is basically not the OT,
because they have their movies already in their head. It mostly like for the director and cast: ''Think one number from 1 to 5000'' ''Oh, sorry, the fan thought number 2645 and you went with number 1325''
The paralels are huge between TFA and OT now with the SPOILER rescuing Rey by Han and not a Jedi with lightsaber Finn from the 3rd Death Star.

But still, you can do a simmilar plotline and do it differently so it is entertaining.
It is playing safe, yeah, let's call it ''legendary star wars formula'', but could be fun with some details and subplots added. It just won't be guerilla warfare of New Republic and Imperial Grand Admiral.

I will be in a flash on this forum after December 17, returning from Cinema and will post my feel on the film.
How are the Time zones? Will I see it as one of the first people with Paris time zone or are the premieres aligned over the globe?

Au contraire, as a mature OT hardcore fan I find it rather irritating that Abrams & company thought they'd be pleasing me and others by featuring the old TIE fighter design (outdated by the TIE Interceptor in ROJ, IMHO) still being state-of-the-art 29 years after the OT.

I had rather expected more changes and evolutions. I just hope we ge a solid and intriguing story and interesting characters. Will watch the film December 17th at 1400 hours CET.

So we're less than 3 weeks away from Star Wars The Force Awakens. The excitement for this movie is palpable and electric. The hype machine is in full overdrive. With every passing trailer, magazine feature and TV ad this movie looks more and more amazing. People have been waiting over 30 years for this film to come out and here it is! Nearly upon us! Our hopes and desires eager to be fulfilled! But wait. What's that? You've been burned before? Well who hasn't? Everyone's probably walked into a movie where their expectations were high and have then been disappointed, right? Rotten Tomatoes gave (fill in the blank movie) 98% and all of your friends, family and coworkers said (fill in the blank movie) was the greatest thing they've seen in years. But then you go and watch that movie and are horribly let down. Your expectations were wayyy up here while the experience you just had was wayyy down there. But on the other hand most people have probably had the opposite experience, right? Everyone said (fill in the blank movie) was horrible but then you see it and maybe it's not half bad. Not great but enjoyable on some level because at least it didn't let you down. So my question to you is: how do you temper your expectations? Or do you even try? I'm thinking of watching The Phantom Menace, the Lost series finale and the Star Wars Holiday Special back to back just prior to watching The Force Awakens. What are your plans to temper your excitement? (Or are you even going to try?)

Haha! I love the holiday special!

Well I'm going in full on hyped. I can't help it. Luckily everything I've seen is completely awesome to me. So now I'm even more hyped. I also understand this movie will never be what I might have imagined it to be. Disney has a lot to lose if this movie is bad. I can't imagine anyone involved would want to make a mistake that big. My hype levels stuck at 11. STAY ON TARGET!

The plan when I sit down in the theater is to remind myself to have an open mind, and enjoy the ride.

I'm waiting on spoilerific reviews (particularly of the Luke variety and whether they squash those awful 2 second cameo/no Luke, Han, & Leia interaction or not) before I fall fully into hype mode. I'm sorry to say I just don't trust the filmmakers that much to just sit there and let them do whatever they want with the characters. I've been too disappointed with too many films I thought would be awesome ahead of time in the last few years. I'm very anxiously waiting for the 14th and hope we get word ASAP after the movie premiere is over. I'm tempering my expectations by hoping for the best but preparing for the worst, and only making the bets where I win either way (though one victory is most assuredly higher than the other): if I claim Luke is only in the film for two seconds and never does anything and never interacts with Han and Leia, and this all ends up being false, then I win. If it ends up being true, well, I still kinda win because I was "right"...even if I didn't want to be, if that makes sense.

But yeah....it's very hard for me to maintain all of my hype right now. I'm full of half hype and half apprehension. I've even had dreams about the film a couple times in the past weeks, unintentionally (like most dreams, I guess), just because I've been dwelling on the whole awful Luke cameo rumor thing so much, lol! I've actually become almost physically stressed out over it, lol, as silly as that sounds... All the while though I take bittersweet comfort in knowing the best Star Wars films have already been made, and I've already seen them.

So yeah, I can't wait to get word on those spoilers ASAP.

I loved the prequels when I first saw them in the cinema...I won't be disappointed by TFA. In 10 years time after dozens of viewings on the small screen, who knows how I'll feel about it, but I know it's going to blow me away in 3 weeks :)

I have learned not just by the PT, but alot of sequels to great franchises that don't expect 'the best.'

I'm actually going into TFA with tempered expectations as I'm expecting to be entertained, expecting nostalgia with Han, Luke, & Leia, but not expecting it to be as great as ESB.

There are a reason some movies are deemed classics, because its rare when it happens. It could be great, it could be good, it good be a turkey, but I'm not expecting it to be the be all end all SW movie.

I'm going in fully hyped but with no expectations, or prerequisite needs. That way as long as the story and the cast's performances make me feel like I'm back in the GFFA, I'll be satisfied and I'll fully enjoy the movie.

Hey, you just stole my motto. ;-)

Some of my close SW friends prefer to watch the film without having seen any images beforehand. However, knowing myself I will pay attention to many background details, I've been paying close attention to these to make sure these will not distract me from the story, the dialogue and the film in a broader sense. I'm now familiar with all the major characters which enables me to focus on how they interact "on the stage".

But here is a major recommendation to temper one's expectations. In one of the latest interviews Abrams had expressed some concern about the trailers which do not reveal or hint that there's plenty of humor in the film. What kind of humor? I'd bet that Abrams will not feature fart or burp jokes Lucas gave us starting with ROJ.

But everybody's take on humor is different and I'm not that familiar with Abrams' humor. So while some may like or love it, others won't. Maybe that's what Boyega was somewhat concerned about?

I have been waiting 33 years for a sequel. Nothing, nothing will feel like a let down. Han, Luke and Leia is the main reason I can't wait. The diversity in this film has me also excited.

    Again, its got the Falcon..........

    What more could anyone want

So, I think that, if you're wrong about the Big 3, you end up winning anyway.

Regarding this movie, I do think that it's best to temper any expectations so that the movie is more enjoyed later on.

That's good for you but just the Falcon isn't really enough to get me excited. I'll probably be crying tears to see some of my favorite OT ships being nothing more than some carcasses rotting on the surface of Jakku.

A reunion with "old friends" is always a great thing, but not really when you find out that they are all dead. :-(

extremely talented guy. i hope he directs a star wars film one day.

it is clear now that we can assume TFA will defeat a lot of films that do not deserve to be as high as they are on the imdb best 250 movie list. TFA will absolutely dethrone films like the dark knight (2008) and that film is currently listed as 4th best with a rating of 8.9

I remember watching Phantom Manace in the theater (it was the last movie my dad watched.. actually, he felt asleep, lol). I was so hyped, but didn't thought it was that good. I will watch TFA with an open mind, but I won't get soft on it either - if it sucks, I will aknowledge it.

To me, TFA will be more like a promising restart. I'm trully overhyped, but at the same time, I'm hopeful for the new things to come after this new start.
