I was thinking of the bowcaster moment as one of the call-back moments. I didn't find it particularly funny, but it doesn't seem crazy to me that Han had never used the thing before. It just wasn't that funny. What I loved most was the banter between Rey and Finn, and between Rey and Han, all of which was in the service of character development. For example, when Han offers Rey a job, this really sells the idea that Rey instantly sees him as a father figure: who would want a mentor who was both a badass, but also affectionate in the charming yet gruff way. Heck, I wanted Han to be my mentor at the moment, and I'm no spring chicken...

Lol I think a lot of us would take Han as a mentor, regardless of our age. His effectiveness in that role I would have to question though :p you wouldn't be much of a Saint by the time he was finished with you ;).

Avoid the Variety review. It contains spoilers (and contains some other pretty serious problems, imo).

    Right?!

That’s great, you’ve tried to spoil the film for everyone...but what exactly was the excellent point you were trying to make in doing so? Oh, wait, you didn’t have one?

Fair enough. For me, I loved the actors and their chemistry but I found the characters mixed. Kylo I felt was the only well developed character. Every other character just felt wasted/ not-developed enough. That said, I highly suspect that The Last Jedi is going to make much better use of the characters. A lot of it is due to Rian Johnson in my view being a better director and the actors being much more comfortable.

My hope with this movie going forward is that the Force Awakens will be seen as a TV pilot, with The Last Jedi being the actual meat of the story. Because, given what we know: First Jedi Temple, increased characterization and themes, and a full overview of the conflict between the First Order and the Resistance, the movie how I envision it is a mix between BattleStar Gallactic and Legend of Korra Second Season.

An epic Space opera that dares to be dark and expand upon the Lore of Star Wars in ways that we have never seen before. And the review has indicated as much and you see the split. This is pure speculations, but I have a feeling that some of those people who weren't too keen on the movie may have preferred Force Awakens.

I'm actually really surprised the film hasn't surfaced online somewhere yet, its been out in parts of Europe since yesterday (technically). The pirates are losing their touch lol.

I honestly have NO idea what's happening in the movie. The only spoilers I know are related to toys, games, and books that have been officially released.

But I wonder if next few days we see Mark Hamill WITHOUT his contractually obligated beard. If he was just keeping it through the release so people don't think Luke dies.

    Tomorrow can't come soon enough.

So what’s with the wildly contradictory reports that have come out today? Some people seem to love the film because it does a lot of new stuff, while others seem to hate it for that, and yet there’s another group that seems to not like it because it “doesn’t do enough.”

I don’t get it. It seems like there’s two to three different movies about right now.

Also, it seems like quite a few people are now walking away from the film confused, and pissed.

All this contradiction has me worried, When just yesterday we were getting glowing reviewsand we were in the seventh heaven of joy and relief. I’m scared guy.

I haven't seen it yet but I'm not worried because I will take the film as it is, a movie. I think the more seriously you take star wars the more chance you have of being disappointed or offended. But I recon this was needed to shake it up a bit. It was all coming a bit too staid. So it is going to upset some. Your cart please all star wars fans.

People like the controversy more than watching a film. It's very 2017.

EXPECTATIONS are the root of the problem. Some fans are just expecting certain things, and when we aren't given them? The movie sucks. This is why I'm not hyping myself up for this, not speculating for literally hundreds of hours out of the year on this one film. With that much time of your waking life dedicated to a movie? How can people not be disappointed? Fans need to temper their expectations. Mine are definitely lower now considering the literally insane and conflicting reactions to this film; is it really THAT bad? Good grief.

I've read most of the non spoiler rewies so far , some youtubers i usually watch ( John Campea , Emergency awsome and others), some people here whom opinion i've come to trust , they say avoid the spoilers , there will be surprises , so thats what i'm doing ( trying at least xd), even those with "tpm was way better than tlj" end of the franchise atitude don't say words like rehash, reboot, clone of the old movies , so i'm going into the cinema ( on saturday) with a large smile on my face and pretty damn sure i will enjoy this new sw movie.

May the force be with me lol .

It sounds like no matter what the film is going to be original and new and challenging which is all I really wanted.

I have no idea what happens as I've managed to stay spoiler-free but it seems like from what I've read they're taking the franchise in a new and unexpected direction. What that is I have no idea, but what I do know is that type of thing is going to piss off a lot of hard core Star Wars fans who seem to just cling to this fantasy that some day someone is going to make their head cannon movie. People need to accept that Star Wars is being produced for the entire world audience and not the specific group of hardcore fans who post about it on forums like this.

I'm frankly pretty excited to hear that things are going to get interesting.

I don't take much stock in Rotten Tomatoes, but when your film is scoring at 95% with over 200 reviews, you know this is a GREAT FILM in a film sense, which is something I've wanted since Empire. This isn't your average lets seek out "light in the Sky" and blow it up action film, and thank god for that. I'm excited to see what kind of awesome film craft Rian has employed. I don't care who Rey's parents are, never have. I don't care if force ghosts are in the film, i just want a good film and by all accounts, this is a great one.

Well said. It's already Episode EIGHT – I mean there is almost a NEED for doing things quite differently.
