I think that due to the mexican can art, 3po will be the only one getting his hand cut off. No more main hero dismemberment. ;)

And remember that Lucas has always said that the SW saga is told/viewed through the eyes of "those two droids". 3PO was already killed in ESB when he was shot by a Stormtrooper and was found blown to pieces by Chewie. Droids are immortal, and if anything (Daniels retiring) they'd no doubt replace Daniels with another that can do the job...movie magic. The droids will not die....IMHO. :)

Doubt it, it's too much of a Star Wars trope to just drop; even the Marvel movies have adopted it as an homage to Star Wars. Plus, losing a limb is an easy way to allow a hero to get seriously injured without major disfigurement: a "good guy" can lose a limb and have it replaced without much fuss (Luke in OT, Anakin in PT), whereas a "bad guy" can get major facial disfigurement in order to make them more evil (Palpatine in PT, Vader in PT).

I think 3PO's arm will just be left as is to show that time has passed and adventures were had in that time; we'll probably read about it in a novel eventually.

So which is it? Is BB8 "male" or "female"? Has there been any official word on this? I got the distinct impression from the reveal at Celebration that BB8 was a "she" based on the "voice," but I was too geeked out watching the droid roll about to listen carefully enough to what was being said about her/him. I thought I could recall JJ saying something like, "Can you guys keep it down?" while they were chattering, but that is frequently used in an informal way to refer to mixed company, not just a group of males.

My personal thought is that BB8 is female, both because of the feminine voice (like Eve from WALL-E) and since R2 and (hashtag) CP3O are decidedly male (albeit the latter being at least androgenous...) and there is a push for more female characters in the GFFA.

I had heard earlier on that BB-8 was a "she," but I don't remember where that information came from. Probably just speculation. I don't think anything official has come out about it. The only thing I've heard that we can go on is an interview with the R2 builders at Celebration who provided the astromechs for the movie. They were asked if BB-8 was a he or a she, and although they did not work with that droid and couldn't say for sure, they felt comfortable referring to it as "he."

Oscar Isaac repeatedly said "it", dunno who made up that "she".

If you may recall in early 2014, C3PO was the only ;) Star Wars character in the first b-w PR notice for The Force Awakens.

I can't see why C3PO won't be all thru the ST. He and R2 have been thru a lot. Lol...
For some strange reason, I don't see BB8 making it. :(
Maybe it gets waxed in Ep8. 3 droids does seem like a lot and I wouldn't clearly know why R2D2 couldn't do what BB8 does. Unless he chooses to remain with Luke in the climax.

    TFM

PS; for a weird reason too, I think it may be Rey not Luke who has a cyborg hand that rubs R2. She might be injured by Kylo Ren in the last battle.

I think we will see them only in the escape moments.

C3PO and R2D2 are very old. They been through a lot. R2 has had a lot of adventures. Maybe it's time for them to take a rest and let BB-8 do his thing?

BTW, im hoping BB-8 will hame some kind of legs that come out, like those droidekas that roll and also have legs.

I think BB-8's whole schtick is that he rolls on a ball. So I doubt we'd see legs. But who knows? Maybe he's got all kinds of tricks and gadgets, like R2.

    Great Post!

I see it the same way, C3PO was the heart of ANH and helped us finding the way into a galaxy far far away.
It was a totally new playground back then and the C3PO character took our hand and guided us easy with good timed comic relief.
We need light-hearted characters in Star Wars, it would be boring and too serious without them.
I always enjoyed the journey of both droids in the OT, in the PT they were like extras in the backround.
The droids should get more to do in the ST as in the PT, I want to see them in adventures again.

Edit: I would dislike to see C3PO and R2-D2 dying in the ST, but you never know.
George Lucas is no longer at the helm and his orignal plan for the droids may be cancelled.
Disney could introduce new droids and kill off the old ones, one by one each movie.
The good thing is, they could bring them back.
Storytelling wise it's a lot easier to revive a droid, a human character would be much harder to explain.

highly doubt either 3P0 or R2 will ever die, there would be no point other than to shock the audience. However, I think they both will barely be in TFA. Probably a scene with Leia and an appearance near the end of the film, that's it. BB8 is the new droid going forward.

I highly doubt Disney would ever allow the droids to die; of all the characters they bought, they are the timeless ones that can very conceivably live through every movie they plan to make, ad infinitum. However, you're right in that they're also the easiest to "kill" and bring back; it happened to both of them in the OT, why not do the same in the ST?
