If this comes out before the film, like the prequels, I will read this first. It is a lot more difficult for me to read something when I know what is already going to happen. But to see the film after I have no problem, but I have a felling it will not come out until after the film debuts.

Agreed. I hope they do release them before the movie like the prequels though, anything to get a jump on what goes down in this film!

Usually it takes me two or three weeks to get a novel read, but for the films it more like two or three days.

Really? I enjoy a good read but you don't you think that reading the novel would totally spoil the film for you?
I mean after all, novels are typically more elaborate and generally fuller more satisfying versions of their onscreen counterparts, so wouldn't you only be setting yourself up for a disappointment with the film?

Not even remotely. To me, reading a book and watching movies are two completely different experiences altogether. The extra details and elaboration in the novel will be greatly appreciated but will in no way change how I feel about the movie.

I have spent countless, countless hours reading Star Wars novels. Before just a few months ago it had been literally years since I had watched a Star Wars film - I am in love with the universe, and reading stories taking place within it has always just felt like a more engrossing experience for me.

Usually someone leaks the script even before the novelization comes out. That was what I remember from the prequels, anyway. So my progression would be script -> novel -> movie. I'm not counting on any scripts being leaked this time, though. JJ Abrams being the way he is with surprises and all. But then again, I don't really know how they can keep that script locked down for so long. They have to give it to companies making merchandise and tie-ins, and it just gets out there eventually.

I remember how excited I was about ROTJ, and my family had planned to see it opening day. My dad went to the grocery store and came back with the comic because he knew how much I wanted to see the movie. I devoured that comic book and totally ruined the movie for myself. Ugh. Doesn't stop me from trying to get spoilers but reading the novelization? Probably not until after I see the movie.

Oh crap! I forgot about the comic! I always read the comic version before the movie came out too. I think I'll be avoiding the comic this time, though.

It feels weird knowing that this novelization is canon and none of books for the other six movies are.

I've never read anything stating this one was canon. I did, by coincidence, read a line about none of the other novelizations being canon just last evening. Interesting stuff.

Hahaha that looks like someone at Del Rey getting told off after the first tweet.

    "They are canon."

"....well, the parts where they fit perfectly with the films are canon."

I was going to say - I've got an old original copy of the Star Wars novel that begs to differ! :)

That is the question. Should one read the book if it comes out before the movie?

If Star Wars was a book franchise turned to film I would most certainly read it 1st. But Star Wars is a film franchise 1st, everything else follows after imo.
The thing about Star Wars is all about seeing the movie for the 1st time. So to me, reading the book before I go see the film would spoil that excitement I would have waiting in line for a week to see the film \m/

I'd say to wait until after the movie comes out. Then you can get a good look at a whole bunch of additional lore after you've seen the movie!
