After sleeping on the trailer, this is going to be PG-13 with all the murder, mayhem and apparent torture. It's unfortunate because there is no way my wife and I are taking our 7 year old to see this. The kids in her class have all been talking about the excitement of a new Star Wars movie and the let down on this is going to be brutal. Yes, the original trilogy has some violence, but it's pretty clear the New Order is going to lay waste to people in a way that is wholly inappropriate for a child to view. It's just going to be too dark for kids.

This is the one area where they may have completely blown it.

I voted PG13, because that is today's reality.

I think this is the best approach for parents, because they know their kids the best. :)

After considering for awhile, I think they will give it PG-13 rating. I think it is smart, as it is obvious the movie is dark and will contain a some (a lot?) of violence and disturbing images and scenes that can have an impact on the younglins... Which actually leads me to my main concern. I am actually a bit worried that this movie might not be as lighthearted and fun as the OT (or even PT, which in their naivete were actually very amusing). I have to admit that I am a bit concerned JJ is taking SW into darker waters; thus, changing its tone as well. The trailer contained very little of things that would make me believe this would be a movie with lighthearted jokes and camp humor (the corny and cheesy dialogue is an essential SW trait to me).

I can understand parents' disappointed. I saw RotJ when I was 6 and loved it! Sure, it was scary with the battle in Endor, creepy-looking Emperor and duel between Luke and Vader. However, I was able to see it at the time. My nephew is now the same age as I was then and a diehard SW fan; he will be crushed if if he cannot see the movie.:(

Between the dead bodies which going by the weapons the KOR are using will be a brutal battle and the Poe torture scene this will without a doubt be a hard PG 13 film.

Don't worry. BB-8 is a pretty light-hearted character, and I'm fairly certain that after the Poe torture scene it will be pretty light up until the final act, with a few emotional but otherwise non-traumatic scenes.

My dad did the same with me back in the day, but back then kids I knew only saw G films so for many of us (if not most of us) Star Wars was the first PG and that was it until Empire or Indiana Jones. I don't see language being an issue, just the violence.

No, it doesn't make you over protective. I've seen kids in the Marvel films and Jurassic World younger than my kid and I'm like what??? Star Wars violence always felt fake and distant until they set Anakin on fire.

Keep an open mind. I agree it looks like it might be leaning that way. Are you familiar with common sense media? Instead of a capricious out of touch group of anonymous white geriatric patients (MPAA), it uses teams of child psychologist to evaluate films on a more granular level.

I really hope for PG-13. But what actually matters is that the story is good, whatever rating it might be.

Yeah, we go there all the time. Its a little frustrating trying to figure out who can go to what these days. Even Frozen was PG and we took her to that blind, because Disney and Cartoon.... Still cant figure out what was PG in that film.

Yeah, saw something last night that said Europe was 12A or something like that which is PG-13 equivalent.
