Ok.....my thread that discussed the Maz and Yoda connection was merged into this thread guys... So since it had Maz means it had to be merged . Lets discuss ........

 

I can understand why the speculation, but I'm saying no. The character is so much like Yoda already, it would be groan worthyingly predictable. Not that Abrams isn't capable of that, but still.

 

I agree, they have to be a little different

 

I'm gonna laugh so hard if Maz's glasses have a yellow glow and her first line in the movie is "Utinni! Utinni!".
Then, I'll sit on the cinema's floor and cry...

 

Plagueis reveal aside...Maz is potentially from Tatooine? Maybe Anakin's alien doll does have more meaning...

With the podracing flags and Tatooine being listed as her home... yikes, maybe she really was a podracer? I didn't see that prequel tie-in coming...

Yea just found it, I had stopped following the Plageious thread thinking it would die out at about par 280.... i was slightly off.

 

If the film is a turkey, (which some nerdy sites and redditers are already predicting), I bet one of the key reasons why is this characters flops.

The whole thing about her having psychedelic eyes and being even older than Yoda...I am not sure the gravitas of that can be pulled off with a bright Sunkist logo face and goggles. If any actor can do it, Lupita can though and I'll admit her voice is strong and resonant in the trailers.

I think Maz plays an influential role in Finn's progression in Episode 8, just a hunch.

 

It was fairly well known Star Wars trivia that an african language was used for Nien Nunb in RotJ.

In this interview Lupita says it was in fact a local dialect spoken where she grew up in Kenya!
So what do you guys think, will we get Maz talking in Sullustan with Nien Nunb at some point?

 

I'm excited to see what her 'special abilities' are. The leaks say she takes out stormtroopers when the First Order attacks her castle, but the thing with the eyes confuses me. If they have her doing Cyclops-style Force beams, I think that will be a step too far...

I like Maz she's given just enough time to get a sense of her, before she has to fade out in TFA. I liked that, I thought she was well portioned in terms of time and development for the story that was playing, while Phasma seemed too inconsequential, just there to be an action figure later.

Note that she turns the situation in reverse for both Finn and Rey. Rey learns the family she seeks is ahead of her, not behind. Finn confronts the truth that he can't run away from his fear of the Front Order, he has to confront it, he has to fight.

I see this as useful in Episode 8, in ways I won't speculate here, but I will suggest her role will be similar when called upon.

What's striking is just how well Maz is rendered compared to Snoke, but of course Snoke is evolving and will not look quite the same in Episode VIII, my guess there, (this from the man who still wants Max von Sydow to be Lobot).

She's one of the key pieces that work in The Force Awakens, it's the damn bowling ball Beholders in the boxy, boring freighter sets that sucked.

Yeah she was one of my favorites in the film for sure.

 

Didn't like Maz. Too much 'trying not to be a Yoda like character' but not really achieving it. Plus, don't like cgi characters.

 

She played a smaller role than I expected, but she was an interesting and likable enough secondary character. Not really sure what's not to like.
My only complaint is that, much like with the rest of the film, the lack of context makes it hard to figure out where she's coming from. She's "no Jedi" but just knows lots of things about the Force and Luke? Why does she know/care about Rey? Just who is she? It's not presented as a mystery to be uncovered in a later film. She's a guiding/authority figure, but why?
