The Official Poe Dameron Thread

I must say the character of Poe Dameron was one I immediately fell in love with. Very unorthodox for a 'fighter pilot' character. Generally portrayed as cocky egotistical aggressive primadonnas, Dameron comes off as someone you would want to hang out in a bar with. He definitely would not fit in with viper pilots on the Galactica, tho. His mentality is just.. iconoclastic. (Not saying that's a bad thing, tho. He's just original.)

I must disagree that he is the Han Solo of this trilogy, tho. This guy has more in common with Wedge Antilles than Han Solo, IMHO. Han is more chaotic good while Poe is more neutral good in his alignment.

 

I think the only reason he's been missing a thread is due to the lack of mystery. He's pretty straight forward...which is a good thing.

I loved all the new characters...and I find Ren the most interesting. I want to know more of his backstory...BUT...Poe is my favorite.

I was never a HUGE fan of pilot and flying scenes when I was younger. Poe has shed a new light for me. I thoroughly enjoyed every pilot scene in this film.

While all the actors will grow to become legends...and all gave notably phenomenal performances...I personally feel Oscar Isaac took the lead...even if it was just by a RCH.

People keep wondering...will Rey be the "New Han"? will Finn? While I believe that all the core characters personalities and purposes were randomly divvied among the new actors, I find Poe to be the "New Han"...in my eyes. He has the stubborn bravery and courage, the well-timed cocky humor, and more.

Rey is Luke, Finn is Han, Poe is Leia. (In very broad terms.)
Like Leia, Poe is a good person who is dedicated to a cause. That's the basic archetype he represents, if we need to match ST characters to OT ones.

I respect and see where you are coming from.
I feel as though they took Luke, Leia, & Han and threw them in a blender. Of course, some end up more like one than the others. Here is how I see it:

Finn:
-Han: Blaster. Head-Strong. Ballsy. Confident.
-Luke: Cares greatly for the well-being of his peers
-Leia: A planner

Rey:
-Han: Good (freighter) pilot. Smuggler mentality.
-Luke: Calm. Thoughtful. Confused
-Leia: Inspiring. A leader

Poe:
-Han: Funny. Ballsy. Confident. the "Big Brother" much like Han was to Luke.
-Luke: Great fighter pilot. Willing to take the lead to help the Rebels/Resistance. Reliable.
-Leia: Rebels/Resistance. A key help to the Reb/Res. Ties the protagonists into the Resistance. Faces danger headfirst for the good of the Resistance.

 

while Han Solo has gone down in history as the character who wanted to die and finally got his wish in TFA,
Poe is going to go down in history as the character who refused to be killed off and went on to help save the galaxy.

 

You hit upon something there. Poe's straight forwardness. I also think it's a good thing. In fact, Rolling Stone has a snippet about Poe's straight forwardness on a recent feature on Oscar Isaac:

The above snippet sounds promising, has me excited, and also implies that Poe will also be in Episode VI.

I agree with everything you've said here. While I love all the new characters,Poe is also my favorite because of his confidence, charm, and swagger. For me, he is the new Han. I love what Oscar Issac brought to the role, and admittedly I am biased having already been a big fan of Oscar's from his previous roles in other films. I mentioned this in another thread but Poe was the main reason I felt breathed a sigh of relief for TFA. After watching his interaction with BB-8 and his sassing of Kylo Ren, my nervousness instantly vanished and I settled in and enjoyed the movie immensely..

this was exactly my experience! i was clawing the armrest until this exchange and then i knew it was all okay! Poe made it all right.
