I have been thinking about the Resistance having a rumored super weapon a lot lately and was trying to picture what it would look like. I keep coming back to the Ion cannon in ESB that the rebels used to escape Hoth and disable Star Destroyers as well. With how much they've already borrowed from the OT aesthetic-wise, it could make sense that if the Resistance does have a weapon capable of taking out entire Star Destroyers that they might base it's design off of the Ion cannon from the Rebels past. What do you guys think?

That could make sense, the star destroyers on Jakku seem to be rather well preserved to be taken down by other weapons.

There have been many other threads on this where they have debated a massive catapult that could throw planets and star destroyers. I hope it's a simple ion canon.(epic fail)

As @Killerbanana16 stated, it's rumored that the code name for the new super weapon is "Catapult".

    Definition:
Catapult: a device in which accumulated tension is suddenly released to hurl an object some distance, in particular.

It's obvious that this new weapon must be even more powerful than the Death Stars or else it will seem a little "weak" compared to the original trilogy's super weapon. It seems like the new weapon will most likely be planet based and has the ability to move objects (planets, ships, etc) from a great distance, unlike the Death Star that had to travel to the location of the target.

The "catapult" is rumored to be the First Order weapon. The Resistance weapon is the "sledgehammer". Those are thought to be code names of course.

They are just code names. Just like Poe's xwing is code named tilt-a-wirl. I wouldn't read to much into it.

So, will there be music credits to both R.E.M. and Peter Gabriel?

Sledgehammer or Catapult, they could be mass drivers which are pretty devastating weapons in science fiction.

I thought at one point someone mentioned something about a massive EMP burst. Something that would disable electronics for at least an entire star system, if not more. Kind of a passive super weapon, but it would still result in large-scale death if used in the wrong place simply due to loss of life support systems, passenger ships crashing on planets, disabled fleets crashing into the atmosphere of nearby planets, etc.

I'm kind of brought back to something that was mentioned on Rebels with this actually. The disruptor rifles that were apparently both anti-personnel and anti-vehicle that were devastating enough that even the Empire banned their use. Perhaps a bigger form of that?

    Interesting, I missed that tidbit.

Strange though, so we know more about "Array" than we do "Catapult" or "Sledgehammer"?
