This Movie Isn't Needed...I beg to differ.

This is a GREAT way of equating this argument to music. I'm like you (a musician, I'm guessing). I could write and record a simple piece, say G, C, D as a verse, then bounce back and forth from C to D as a pre-chorus, then rock D to C to G as a chorus. Lather and repeat.

It would be a fully functional 'song/tune' but it would lack some needed depth. Say a decent lyric, a bridge, etc.

No one 'needed' Solo, but I think it was worthy as a film. More than worthy, it was a really good film! Some folks say they should have done an Obi-Wan movie instead. Not sure I agree. I can't wrap my head around a guy sitting in the desert watching a kid grow up. Without some serious twisting, that wouldn't work.

I know Ewan McGregor is still with us, and seems to be willing to do it (and I'd totally dig it) I just can't find a story there. Solo offered, and delivered, a way to flesh out his background along with others. It's the guitar-solo to the Han Solo story.

Sure, it's not necessary to the song overall, but it does add value.
