And most people, apparently, didn't care. And a lot of that stuff was covered and available in additional material.

And a lot of people love Lightsaber battles found in Star Wars, doesn't mean GoT should include them.

Except I wasn't just referring to what it means for IX: I referred specifically as to how such a gap could be used for related media to branch out, and, I hate to suggest this, I don't think Lucasfilm and the story group only put the story's best interests at heart when it comes to jumps in time. At the end of the day, this industry is about money, as is every industry, so I'm sure that the film is more to be likely well enough spaced out from VIII so that other stories in other forms of media can fill the gap, which makes much more sense, from a financial and story potential perspective, than continuing shortly after TLJ.

On the other hand, of course, it could be argued that the thirty year gap between ROTJ and TFA was engineered to allow a push for stories in all types of media in a similar way to how I suggested that a break between VIII and IX could be more profitable/leave the door open to more stories.

Perhaps could might have been a better choice of word than would, which I would agree with, but the fact that you are the first to find a major problem with what seems to be a slip of the finger on a keyboard implies to me that everyone else understands the implication of my words given the context of the situation.

(Beside that you have a lot of duels in GOT) Of course.
But we were talking about politics and I my point was just it's not that politics = boring per se.
One may like it or not per se, of course. ( I'm not particularly fond in dragons, still I love GOT because of all the rest. :) )
But some people like those kinds of plots.
    I'm one of them.
I'm one of those who usually like politics a lot.
But I think that in PT politcs are poorly done.
    Thus I find them boring.

but they aren't right for every kind of story - and a space opera isn't really the best place for a lot of politics. "Evil Empire oppresing people" - thats all we need.

    I can agree.
In the end SW was born as an epic saga... it's mythology, we may say.
A compelling and not boring political plot - even in a fictional world/galaxy - diverts the tale into a "realistic" tale.
Or at least it's very hard to find a proper... balance.
All I can say it's that I believe GL to be a genius when it comes to epic, mythology...
Cannot say the same about the realistic plots.

I wouldn't necessarily say that. People enjoyed TFA well enough, and I think it was a good call to not mire it in prequel politics, but I remember people getting really confused about the Resistance/Republic differentiation in the film. It really wasn't made all that clear.

Really, Leia just needed to be more focused on in the film. I think through the "show, don't tell" policy, we could get a lot of Resistance/Republic understanding without straight up exposition explaining it.

And source material should never provide the context of a film. Expand on it? Sure.

thats the point - the resistance/republic/first order politic's thing is just something to expand on. What we got in the movie is jsut fine - just enough to set up the conflict.

Right, we got to see the fight between the First Order (hey, we know that one!) and the Repub... wait, didn't they call them The Resistance? I though I saw someone call something the Republic too. Who cares! There's lasers!

Point being, I think there's quite a big gap between the course in Honors Parlimentary Procedures of the prequels and the rather lifeless depiction of the "good guy factions" in TFA.

Yes, the resistance, the people resitancing the First Order. Cool. No one came out of the theatre going "I didn't get it, and not knowing ruined that movie for me".

Perhaps (though we both know you obviously can't say that for certain).

I guess I just see value in actually understanding a film. I mean, if someone goes to see IT this weekend and walks away thinking the titular creature was actually just a shapeshifting clown, it's not like they couldn't enjoy the movie- and it's a good time (see what I did there?) - but they didn't understand it, either. Not to mention, their flawed idea of the context will probably cause issues when they're trying to watch the sequel.

point me in the direction of people complaining about hte lack of explaintion of the political climate - people don't only complain in person these days. If that is a problem peopl ehave the movie, it will be online.

but you don't need that political info to uderstand the movie

I read several articles on it the week TFA was released. I'm sure you could find them if you're genuinely interested.

Anyway, to prevent this from being us talking past each other again, I guess I can try to get back on topic-

I'd say the max amount of years I'd want a gap is 5. Anything more would start to be unbelievable, I think- plus, simply too much could've happened in between. The third installment in a trilogy shouldn't be spent playing catchup.

I have a feeling the whole trilogy is going to be much more condensed than 4-5-6, if there's little to no gap between 7 and 8 I don't think there's going to be any with 9 either. To keep the flow of this trilogy's story consistent.

I certainly read plenty of complaints about TFA skipping over relevant political information, but it wasn't one of the biggest gripes about the movie. It wasn't an issue for me at all, but I certainly get it - the relationship between the Rebuplic and the Resistance was not clear, and the destruction of the Republic home world had zero emotional impact.

I would love to see a cut of the movie that included the plot thread about Leia sending her representative to Hosnian Prime. That would almost certainly have explained the current state of the galaxy. Obviously JJ and company made a deliberate choice to cut that scene in favor of faster pacing - and the movie was still well received so it seems to have worked out. But still, I wonder if it might have added depth to the story.

I think there's a bit of an over-reaction by a portion of the fan base against politics in Star Wars movies because of the PT. Like with CGI effects, just because Lucas over did it with them in the PT, doesn't make them all bad. I don't think the scene in ANH around the conference table in the Death Star was too much.

It sure seems that way. I think the fact that they are being filmed closer together also has an impact on that. Although, to be honest, when I first saw RotJ I assumed not much time had passed since Empire ended. It wasn't until Shadows of the Empire that I realized it was supposed to have been longer than a few days.

Exactly. I'm not saying it in any way ruined TFA. Just that, perhaps it could've improved it.

The part I bolded from you is a fantastic example. We get context- okay, so this is the Empire. They mention a dissolution of the Senate, so clearly not only is the Empire big and scary, but also clearly corrupted. Some mention of unrest informs us of the sparking Rebellion. And, of course, discussion of the battlestation, as well as the Force itself. And we get some exciting action, when Vader chokes out Motti a little. Definitely better than trade negotiations.

Good point. I guess since there's no child actors in VII that need to be brought into VIII, because we would see their age difference even after only 2 years between filming. So if there were any very young actors in VIII that we would expect to be in IV, we would have to assume there's some time gap.

I think half a year to 2 years would be a decent time gap.

The problem with the PT was not politics it was connection. There was a level of scale and distance that seemed nebulous and esoteric. No one complains about the strategy and policy conversation in ANH.

Its the right touch, execution and simplicity that effect if it works or has a place in SW.
