I wonder with news like this if we will continue to get trilogies. Seems to be the thing now. Or at least plan them, then split the last book into two parts so you can make more money.

I'm not even sure I need to see the one.

Also, why aren't they trying something new? They have a huge universe they could explore.

Agree. As much as I love Han Solo, I'd rather have KOTOR canonised and made into a movie than this trilogy.

    Yes, I agree 100%.
It seems that Disney is less interested in informing audiences about the Star Wars universe and more interested in delivering huge amounts of stuff fans already enjoy. Don't get me wrong, I like everything from the old films.... But it's time to move on. Show us different places, different characters. Lucas would have done that.

They can't grow the fan base form a business standpoint because it's already a $10B + business and so they rely on what's come before to secure the future .

I understand; however, the franchise can grow quite a bit artistically and story-wise. After a certain point, people will crave something other than the OT era for spin-off movies. They (like myself) will wonder: "what DID happen during this 'Republic that stood a thousand years.'"

While we discuss what from the past should be recanonized, they bring us new planets characters and aliens, ironic isn't it;). Whenever a new actor gets announced we discuss who from the EU he could be, best example is Lor San Tekka: we got a new character defining a new faction.
Concerning KOTOR, I played Kotor 1&2 many times, I hove no idea what or who Revan is, since it depends on the playthrough. That is a huge problem for a story and just because we spend a lot of time with it, it is not more important. Just because it wasn't canon under Lucas doesn't diminish the fun I had, I have no idea why canon is the holy grail.

I think it really boils down to the fact that people will pay to see it. I was doing research for a speech class once about the "franchise" trend in Hollywood right now, and studies have demonstrated that people are more likely to see movies that they feel some level of familiarity with. Hence, turning everything into a franchise. Not saying it's ideal, necessarily, but if it's money and audience numbers studios are after, this method seems to work.

Hollywood IS a business at the end of the day but most of the time its quality isn't always tehre...most recent example: ICE AGE...I'm not saying Han Solo would become that bad but there is always the chance...it's like having the movies called Han Solo, Han Solo 2, Han Solo 3...I think sequels are fine but make them independent of each other which is something I hope we see here ..
