SPECULATION Unkar and his thugs?

I've seen the figure, I haven't heard the name, where'd you hear that? And yeah, I think he looks like a cyborg. I think he looks like concept art cyborg, but I don't think most agree.

 

I'm on the fence about whether I think it's a cyborg or not. It's a Lego figure so it's hard to tell really... It could just be a form of gas mask worn by the guy, which given the atmosphere and the Star Wars penchant for helmeted bad guys, would make sense.

 

My guess is that Unkar is a gangster type, trying to force Rey out of a valuable scavenging area, or work her over for extortion money. There's probably a scene early on where Rey fends off one (or some) of his thugs, so the film can establish how capable Rey is and how dangerous of a place Jakku is.

Plot similarities with the development of Sand People on Tattooine in ANH.

 

To add some speculation...

Finn and Poe crash in the desert...
Finn ends up in the Trade Port looking for anyone to help him.
Constable Zuvio finds Finn to be suspicious and questions him.
Rey steps in and calms down the situation, with some sympathy for Finn.
Finn opens up and tells Rey his desperate story, seeking transport (maybe overheard by Unkar)
Rey decides to verify his story by going to the crash site, taking her speeder to the site
As she arrives at the site, Unkar's thug(s) are either already there or followed her there (Possibly FO troops are already there)
Rey has a quick battle with Unkar's thug(s), fighting from the top of her speeder.
As they are fighting, First Order troops, Tie Fighters descend towards the spot (if they aren't there already)
Rey notices that the First Order have spotted her - TIE FIGHTER is descending on her
She hops on speeder, looking back, then jets back to the trade station (confirming Finn's story) (this is scene from trailer 1)
As she arrives in town, the TIE FIGHTERs descend - blowing up her speeder (explosion from trailer)
She gives a hand to Finn on the ground (scene from trailer 2) and says she has a transport
Stormtroopers arrive and begin chase to capture Finn (recent EW screenshot)
Rey and Finn run to the Falcon and blast off...

That sounds not only plausible, but very exciting to see in the beginning of the film. Especially if we get the rumored start of Finn and Poe facing off or something to that extent to give time for our characters to develop a bit before we just jump straight into the action a la TPM.

There was a couple of outfits with from star wars celebration that had thug on it... and a desert like background picture behind them...

Yeah, I can't tell exactly if it's a cyborg or just a guy in a mask (though I'm leaning towards mask).

I think this sounds like a very reasonable start to the film, and fits with my perceptions of Unkar as being a more or less small-time gangster on Jakku who maybe exists in a role analogous to something like Baron von Strucker (from Age of Ultron) in terms of screentime.

 

I agree, Unkar sounds like a gangster whos after Rey for her goods. she may have debts to pay and thats why shes constantly on the run.

 

I wonder if Unkar might be Jabba-like (non-Special Edition). We see Unkar's henchmen and hear of his gangster-y ways, but we never actually see him in TFA. Maybe not until one of the sequels, so fans can speculate for a few years about what Unkar might look like.

 

For all we know, Unkar might actually be a Hutt...

i don't think anyone knows who Unkar is, unless i've totally missed it. seeing as to how most of the other actors have had their roles confirmed, maybe it's MVS?
