When young Rey is being left on Jakku, there is a hand holding her back as she cried. After looking at a still from the movie, it appears that Unkar Plutt was the one holding her arm. See images below. The voice talking to her sounded like Lor San Tekka [EDIT - After a 2nd viewing it was definitely Unkar]. What do you guys think this means? Has anyone read this scene in the Novelazation?

That's what I had thought, and, if so, he's really gotten some mileage out of that shirt. Or, perhaps LST simply lost weight in the heat (my god, the heat) over the years and subsisting on all those quarter-halfsy portions.

I think it"s Plutt, but I don't know who the voice is.
Pretty strong evidence that it wasn't her parents who left her there, though. I think it was Kylo. He couldn't kill her, but he definitely wanted her to have a hard life and never be found.....

In the movie you can see his face in the top left corner. What you see there is a photo captured with a camera so it's cut off

I am still trying to figure out how Sydow's character has the map part in the first place. Who IS he? There were rumors that he was supposed to be someone that played a role in the prequel era, and that fans would get the connection, but I didn't feel that it was obvious.

In the novelization two things stick out that make me think Lor San Tekka is a sort of Indiana Jones of Star Wars.
When Poe meets with LST he asks him how he managed to get the map and LST merely smiles, reluctant to give up secrets. Poe accepts this and says "Ive heard stories about your adventures since I was a kid"
Later when Kylo Ren confronts him Kylo says "The great soldier of fortune captured at last"

No, it was Unkar Plutt's voice.

This is just like the "Gwendoline Christie: I know all about waiting" nonsense.
It's not Lor San Tekka's voice. Not at all.

The voice is very obviously Unkar Plutt's voice.

It's also very obvious that Kylo has never met Rey until the events of TFA.

A couple things to consider: Lor San Tekka, Rey, and the Millennium Falcon all end up on the same world. Both Rey, and the Millennium Falcon, in the hands of Unkar Platt. While Rey may have been left in the care of Unkar Platt, it would seem that she left and made a life on her own. We don't know the relationship between the two over the last ten some-odd years, during which, Rey learned to fight exceptionally well. I think there is a lot on Jakku that remains to be seen.

Oh, I don't think that's necessarily true. There's something that he says when he first met her that made me think he's seen her before. I can't remember what, now. But I immediately got the impression he'd at least met her before.

Lol that's funny. But seriously, wouldn't that technically make her a slavr...aka more parallels of her being A Skywalker...the person that KR kills in the flashback, I really do think that was sarco plank. In one of the JTTFA books, Luke and Plank have a history so Plank could make sense being there, maybe manning up and being brave and having his last stand with The KOR to give the younglings a chance at survival but is gunned down by the obviously-more-powerful

This situation is like LOST: build an entire new world, let others flesh it out regardless of it being good or bad .

A caretaker abusing his charge is one of the oldest tropes in literature, I fail to see why everyone is so stumped by this.

The Little Princess, Les Miserables, HEAVYWEIGHTS. I mean the examples are endless and I saw this as just another case of this trope as soon as it happened in theaters.

Also I doubt it was Kylo Ren or anyone other than a parent leaving her. Rey identifies that person as her parent and I'm pretty sure young Rey would only react like that if it was a parent. My current theory is that she never knew her father was Luke and it was her mother that brought her to Jakku. That solves the "how does she think Luke was a myth" without the very weak "amnesia" plot device

Yes, please no amnesia devices. We have enough to deal with the Force causing things to happen without invoking a mind wipe, too.

But that would make her mother a pretty bad person to leave her with Unkar. I just have to think, if it's not Kylo, it's someone who doesn't like her very much at all. Perhaps it was an emergency and she had no choice, and thought she'd be back soon- but at least Luke and Leia were left with nice people.

Why was Cosette left with two horrible tavern owners? Desperation leads to poor decisions.

Yes, indeed. And Rey clearly thought it wasn't going to be for very long. But..... Unkar Plutt. Ugh.
