Walt Disney Studios has released their upcoming schedule of films for all franchises now that their acquisition of Fox is complete, including what we care about most, Star Wars! After The Rise of Skywalker, the 'hiatus' for Star Wars films will last three years, with the next Star Wars film set to hit theaters on December 16, 2022, followed by ones in 2024 and 2026. Here is the official press release from Disney Studios.

The full schedule for all films under the Disney umbrella was released, but for your Lucasfilm-only version, Lucasfilm publicist Chris Argyropoulos mapped it out succinctly in a tweet:

Of course now that we know there will only be three Star Wars films through 2026, let the speculation begin. Will these be the films by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss? Rian Johnson? Alternating between the two? Something else entirely?

We will keep you posted as more details emerge about Lucasfilm/Disney's plans for the future of Star Wars films after the Skywalker saga ends later this year. In the meantime, we'll have exciting new content on Disney+ to hold us over until 2022.

So be it. Probably for the best they go every other year. Certainly will prevent SW overload -- and maybe make a SW film's release more of an event like the OT & PT. That said, I was hoping for more "Star Wars Story" films. I thought the concept was brilliant, though one can argue on the execution. In fact, I looked forward to those more than the ST releases. Glad we'll have Disney+ as an avenue to continue the idea of of the SW Stories.

I'm cool with that for now! It's nice knowing this ahead of time too!

I'll miss the "Star Wars Story" films too (even if R1 wasn't my favorite by any means), but I think doing high budget tv shows is a great middle ground for the franchise. Theoretically. More stories and more varied content sooner while the movies still stay special.

I for one dont believe time between films is what makes them special. Only a year between Avengers IW and Avengers EG doesnt make them less special. Good stories makes them special. I hope as stories get fleshed out Disney updates and says yes lets get that 2nd trilogy started. I suspect at this point RJ films wont start releasing until 2028. That sucks. Makes me even think that RJ will back out. Dont think he would want to be committed to something that far in the future.

Oh I agree 100% that good stories are what makes them special -- I didn't mean to "deal in absolutes" ... but a little breathing room (especially for the non-die-hards) is probably a good thing. And like I said, for the rest of us, there's Disney+ content to look forward to.

the gap between the next (announced) few Star Wars movies has been explained in the press release.. they are avoiding the Avatar sequels that will be releasing bi-annually from 2021. i read nothing into it other than that - they want to keep the December holiday release slot for Star Wars movies, and avoiding Avatar is wise to say the least at this point in time.

they also explain that B&W will be working closely with RJ.

no need for doom and gloom posts about RJ not working on Star Wars - it's been made crystal clear that he is.

To anybody comfortable with the hiatus - that's cool, I can see why. Personally, though, I think this suuuuucks... It would be less annoying if they didn't announce new films so early. I mean - I got so excited about Rian's trilogy when it was announced in 2017 and you're telling me the next film is in 2022 and there's a possibility it could still not be it? Ugh...

A movie every other year with TV series in between would be cool, but damn - a 2021 release would already give us a long enough break IMO...

My dream would be B&W move to Disney+ series and RJ sticks to films.

I have to ask... what's the point of announcing their release dates so far in advance?

I would actually like this a lot. Would make sense given their TV experience. Such change is probably unlikely at this point, though...

It's puzzling. This slate seems too small for two separate trilogies/series of movies. Either they merged RJ and B&W projects or one is dead or morphed into something else. I find it hard to imagine they want to hold one of them until 2028 (these year numbers make my brain hurt).

It does suck that we have to wait but I don't mind the hiatus between TROS and whatever is released in 2022. We have waited for longer periods of time before, like between ROTJ and TPM, and ROTS and TFA. Plus we'll also have the content from Disney+, so for me it'll be enough to keep me happy, and it will give me something to look forward to in the future, unlike in the past where everything was up in the air.

As long a they fill it up with high quality TV shows then I am fine with it. Personally I am generally bored with modern blockbusters, especially superhero films. Bring on the high quality story telling we can get with a series.

When you consider the gap that the OT and the PT had to some extent the PT to the ST. We're still getting Star Wars content at a enormous rate. Also note: will get tv shows during that "hiatus" to you know. So, it's not like the gap between the OT and the PT to where there was nothing.

Sweet baby Jesus. I have a hit flick every year until retirement between Star Wars and Avatar, plus whatever they put on Disney+. Wow. Just wow. (r2-d2)
