You're right...from a certain point of view...you can be powerful in the dark side but not be part of any order, which are otherwise known as "dark jedi," but "The Sith" are A VERY SPECIFIC ORDER just like the Jedi are, otherwise the use be ordinary fss .

The term "Dark Jedi" hasn't appeared in canon, but otherwise you're correct.

For me at least, I see the word ''Ren'' as a title just like the word ''Darth''. Just like there was a Darth Sidious and a Darth Maul and all those Darths before and after, there could be a main ''Ren'' that named the order. It would make sense cause we have the Knights of Ren and then we have Kylo Ren. Maybe, if indeed Snoke is a really long lived evil as they have said he is, maybe he was born Carl Snoke Ren but he murdered his parents when he was old enough and he ditched the ''Carl'' since he thought it was lame and kept the rest of his name. Then he built and order and named it after him.

What is "balance". And considering that Lucas was influenced by Joseph Campbell and his Hero's Journey formula based on the archetypes how much of Campbell goes in there?

If you read it up on Wikipedia and elsewhere one of the questions that remain at the end could be what it's good for and what it's about. IMHO and as far as I can tell Campbell never provided a straightforward reply but I think I may have understood.

In a broader context the hero is a revolutionary, his journey will have eventually the effect that he abolishes a petrified dogma, structure and/or belief system so something new can evolve. Our collective global history is the result of big or small revolutions in all kinds of areas, where each "hero" had to overcome resistance and rejection from the established "order".

The way Lucas portrayed both Jedi and Sith in the PT they seemed like orders petrified in dogma and rigid belief systems and rules. Apparently they had outlived a meaningful purpose and therefore had to go - creating a "balance" for a new start or reboot.

I agree with that yet there has to be something left for you to be able to balance it. Both the Jedi and the Sith were stuck in their ways and in their use of the Force and I too thought that the balance would come from clensing the old ways to make way for the new but the problem here was that there was nothing new at all. There was no start or reboot for the Jedi and if Snoke is not a Sith then there wasn't one for the Sith order either. How could Luke simply hide and let the Force lay in a dormant state to the point of it and the Jedi as a whole becoming legends and fairytales? That's really one nasty way of him representing a new hope or being the symbol of the return of the Jedi. Both Luke and Leia knew they were the only hope of keeping the Jedi alive yet one chose to hide and the other seemed to be to cought up in other things to seem to really care.

Remember that the balance of the force aclually is is all based off interpretation. The Jedi believe the balance of the force is destroying the dark side, but if the light side over powers is there really balance?

Anakin's prophecy was complete, it's now time for a new hero's prophecy to move forward & speculate on.

Yes because it is not a math problem. It doesn't mean if there are more Jedi that the Lightside is out of balance with the Dark side. Lucas in short spoke of balance about stopping the Sith and at length that the Balance was between the Living Force and the Cosmic Force. Its a wheel not a scale. A wheel out of balance spins out of control and eventually off the axis. Think of it like balance in an eco system. The Dark Side is fueled by its passion and seeks to dominate, control and manipulate for its own end at the expense of everything outside their passion. Because it is so driven by its passion it taps into the Living Force in its immediate nature. But the Dark Side acts without conern for the overall system. It eventually will crash the system. Just as an ecosystem will break down.

Also note that Anakin was said to be "A" vergence in the Force as opposed to "THE" vergence in the force. This suggests that it is rare and special but not wholly unique. So there have been and will likely be again vergences in the Force.

It probably won't ever appear, but I'd give it a 50/50 chance of appearing, as Kylo is no Sith Lord so he'd be in the "dark Jedi" category in the most traditional sense .

I think its a more and more relevant point when concerning the Sith and the new dark side, especially if the dark side can exist independently of the Sith in forms like Kylo Ren and Snoke, where have they been?

@Darth Sidious yes totally agree with that.

Anyway, I like the idea proposed on this very website that Maz told the Chosen One prophecy to the Jedi.

I wonder if it makes more sense like that too?

I really hope they don't try to upgrade the role of maz like that, it feels a bit like they've thought it through and said, Luke was the lead and he got Yoda now reys the lead so we need a female for a female. Yoda was a mystical leader of the Jedi order in exile Maz is a reformed space pirate who like lots of other people just has there own personal view on the force.

Perhaps Anakin never brought true balance to the force. A balance would indicate an acceptance of ALL aspects of the force, both good/light and evil/dark, which are just degrees of each other anyway. It appears in "Last Jedi" we may see it is Luke who realizes this after the failure of training his nephew reminds him of his dad and he sees that there has to be another way of approaching the force that accounts for both light and dark.

I found this great article on makingstarwars.net. Here's a snippet from it that details the Force and "balance".

"This led to me picturing a large disc, balancing in the center, on top of a thin pole. There would be a natural balance as the disc rests on the pole unaffected by outside forces. The Jedi seek to keep the balance in its natural and neutral state while the Sith, seeking to unbalance the Force, would find ways to tip the disc. If the disc starts to tip to one side then the Jedi would attempt to bring it back to the middle. However, if they were to overcompensate and tip too far in the opposite direction they would be the ones putting the Force out of balance. It is much easier for the Sith to try and accomplish their goal of unbalance, while the Jedi have the difficult task of finding the precise balance to keep the disc “level.”

Basically either side can bring the Force out of balance, but it's up to the Chosen One to eradicate those bringing it out of balance. From a certain point of view, you can say that both sides were responsible for this unbalance, and in eradicating most of the Jedi and the Sith as a whole, Anakin brought balance back to the Force, giving the new Jedi (Luke, Ben, etc.) another chance at keeping the Force balanced once more. As Lor San Tekka says, "Without the Jedi, there can be no balance in the Force."

So at end of Return of the Jedi you had Luke on one side of the Scale and Snoke (though unknown) on the other. Upon being trained and possibly at the point of becoming Dark you then have Luke on one side of Scale and Snoke and Kylo Ren on the other. Balance broken.

Force Awoke Rey to stand with Luke.

Does not matter if they are Sith or Jedi.

As has already been pointed out, "balance" in the Force isn't necessarily related to how many Jedi or Sith there are. In fact, it's not necessarily related to the Jedi or Sith at all. As is becoming much more clear lately, the Force is so much bigger than these two factions, and even the people of the galaxy know that (the Guardians of the Whills being an obvious example).

So, I think we have to ask ourselves- is the Force really balanced. Explanations about the Jedi and Sith in their current incarnations (or lack thereof) aside, do you really feel like the Force could possibly be in balance in the sequel trilogy? Or, if not, was the ancient prophecy really just for a period of like 30 years? Because, well why even make a prophecy at that point?

Of course, I'm not saying that the Force being in balance means neverending peace in the galaxy... but it has to mean something. I just don't really see a significant change in the Force so far, unless we really do simplify things down to the numbers of Jedi and Sith (which I still disagree with).

No, I think that the balance has not happened yet. In fact, that may be what Luke is trying to achieve on Ach-To. "Ending" the Jedi may well be his last ditch effort to achieve that (though, its very possible that is not the right course of action in the end).

Which, of course comes to the point: Anakin was obviously extremely important, but perhaps he was not the chosen one after all. I realize I'm hardly breaking new ground with this idea (Kenobi had it on Mustafar, after all) but I think it's something that is far too often taken for granted.

And, of course, things may have been different before Disney changed canon. The current interpretation of the prophecy may have retroactively changed. But even in the old canon, I have a hard time believing that anything was really all that well balanced, what with how things end up going in the expanded universe.
