I doubt the funeral pyre will happen, maybe it's just a campfire.

You could actually go a lot further than that.

What if the sequence was only understood to be a "flashback" because, as MSW began to understand more of the rest of the movie, this series of shots seemed so out of synch with everything else, and were dovetailed by Maz sitting everyone down to hold hands etc... they were clearly a separate narrative, and non-chronological.
But what if the vision is predominantly set in the future?
What if Luke is mourning the failure of his academy, his pupils' deaths and Kylo Ren's success in the future?
What if, after we have learnt how the saber came back in to circulation years ago, we see what could happen if the wrong pupil joins Luke and his quest; how the clan of pupils will come under attack and how they will fail to defend themselves; how Kylo Ren will eventually kill Rey?
(Maz "taking the object"? Anyone else think that's just supposed to be back in real time, not part of the vision; her taking the lightsaber Finn and Rey have brought with them and pondering it?)
This might explain why Rey is not so keen to take the saber and is repulsed by her destiny.
Maybe it's all just a test; to see how committed Rey will be, even with the knowledge of how things could end badly.
And then at the end of the movie we see Rey head off, and she ends up where Luke is and we see that it is the exact location where we saw Luke in the future vision... so this idea that Rey might actually fail kind of resonates a little more because it is already becoming like the vision predicted...

Just thinking out loud... not necessarily what I think we'll see, of course...
