Why were the PT Force powers stronger than the powers in the OT? Because the Prequels tried to do everything bigger and better. I don't think it had anything to do with the story; it was just Hollywood trying to take everything that worked in Star Wars and make it even louder, brighter, and more.

The audience likes lightsabers? Fine, we'll give 'em hundreds of lightsabers!

The audience liked Luke and Leah swinging on a grappling hook? We'll have Anakin and Obi Wan swing over lava - fighting with lightsabers!

The audience liked X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter battles? We'll give 'em battles with 20 times as many ships!

The audience liked seeing hundreds of stormtroopers in formation on the Death Star? Let's give 'em thousands on Kamino!

The audience liked the Force? Ratchet it up to 11 then!

Sadly, there were too many fighting ships on the screen at once for anyone to follow the action, Anakin and Obi swinging over lava didn't make sense and just looked fake, too many lightsabers made them seem cheap and unremarkable, and - oh dear, this is turning into another Prequel bash, isn't it? Sorry, couldn't help myself.

But yeah, I don't think the Force powers were meant to be on steroids in the PT in regards to the story, I just think the guys at ILM couldn't help themselves. They were trying to make more of the most awesome movie franchise ever, and figured more Force powers = more awesomer.

I don't think that is the argument Da7e was making though. Not that it was meant to be on steroids, but that JJ is going to pull a retcon to argue that the OT was the force muted. Everything you say about the real reasons the force was amped up in the prequels is true. But that doesn't mean JJ can't try to reconcile them in this new trilogy so that it works in universe.

Its an interesting idea to me. To make an in universe justification for continuity issues. Not sure how i feel about it. I'd prefer Jedi power levels to more closely mimic the OT personally. But if they are going to shift back towards the PT, then why not have some story justification in place for it. And it would give Rebels some connection to the ST, which would be a plus.

My personal feeling is that it would be like explaining something that doesn't really need explaining. Disregarding the prequel issues mentioned above (which is hard to do), you have to remember that in the OT we were only really seeing a handful of Force-users anyway - a teenager in training, a dying Yoda, a cyborg Vader, old hermit era Obi-Wan, and Palpatine, who, to be fair, does eventually open a can of whoop-ass in the final act. I don't see how suggesting the OT events were somehow "suppressed" benefits the saga really. I just don't think it is a question that needs answering... unless JJ is under pressure to emulate the lightsaber gymnastics of the prequels and feels that will need justifying, which is a worrying thought.
Just my opinion, of course... :)

Great post: I agree no need for an awakening. But i'm sure we will have egg on our face when VII released. Personally I just don't see how it matches with the idea of the force. But I'm sure it will involve new Jedi being inspired to call on force against someone using or inspired by the dark side of force. Just an opinion too..

Without change something sleeps inside us, and seldom awakens. The sleeper must awaken.

So wouldn't that then be the Jedi in one awakening? I see it this way TIDMADT, if nobody prays does that mean that 'God is Dead?' Perhaps for Star Wars fans it does now. If nobody is a Jedi or Sith, then the force is asleep or dead. (duel)

I know I'm beginning to sound like a winging old bastard but i just don't get this title at this stage!!

The Jedi were stagnant... they lost their way when they broke with the Sith. It wasn't the breaking with the Sith that caused them to be stagnant... it was the fact that they were stagnant that caused the breaking with the Sith

You are right in that an answer is not necessary. But we come up with answers regardless, just like you did.

I actually just watched the end of Empire this morning. And it is clear that there is a severe difference between Anakin and Vader. Whether you attribute that to him losing portions of his physical body, Luke not being powerful enough to require the full wrath of Vader, or Anakin emotionally restricting himself and not wanting to hurt Luke, there is always some sort of rationalization unless you are completely disregarding the prequels (which is just another rationalization in itself).

Now, I'm not saying an explanation needs to be shoehorned in to justify the discrepancies. We could just dismiss the differences. they are movies. They are made up as teh go along. But that's no fun to me. I'd reather reconcile it in universe to maintain the suspension of disbelief. But if the ST story provides potential answers on its own merits, ret-conning the discrepancies through stand alone movies and tv series like rebels doesn't seem like it would harm the OT. If the ST plot is interesting, it could even add layers to the OT and make those battles more interesting.

I mean, why was Obi-Wan at 60 so much less powerful than Dooku or Sidious or Yoda (at the ripe age of 850+) in the PT. I can't think of a dozen reasons or so that I can justify it. But if JJ can provide a reason that doesn't diminish the OT and actually creates something better and more interesting than the cheap rationalizations I could come up with in my head(out of practice from living in the desert for 20 years?) all the better.

Jedi Masters have visions of future events. So I think it's logical that Luke foresees a formidable evil coming that he can't defeat on his own. Therefore I can see Luke gone for 10+ years, but not in exile. At the end of the movie we come to find that he left to secretly train a handful of force users into Jedi Knights.

I stated the same thing, but half in jest. :)
When I wrote what if Luke in the 3rd act or end of TFA rolls in with a huge ship, the loading ramp lowers then 1000s of Luke Skywalker clones rush out! (lightsaber)
    That would be bananas!
Really, I see Luke maybe secretly training either his son, a relative or maybe Daisy(as this recluse on a desert planet).
As I also put out; if Luke IS the cloaked figure Daisy hugs in a "castle" like set, that might be in the dramatic climax where Skywalker must either kill or stop a character then has all the others(Han, Leia, the Alliance, the Republic, the Sith bad guys) really cheesed off.
Daisy or maybe one or 2 others(plus Yoda the Force Ghost (yoda)) will know & understand Luke's true intentions.

The twist could be that several of the evil characters turn out to be undercover Jedi Knights that Luke secretly trained.

I honestly don't buy Luke Skywalker as a "evil character" or a "agent of evil".

He may ether be misled or double-crossed due to his unstable behavior/mindset or not fully understand who or what is going on until the film's final moments/ending. Then he'll either act or lash out.
But again, I doubt in a Disney film he'll go "Carrie" on people or be like the Hulk.
Skywalker may have a epic light saber battle & even use lightening but he won't turn Sith.

    TheFettMan
PS: The "cloak" Skywalker dons may be Vader's outfit because he becomes disfigured, like Palpatine in the PT.
The "new Vader" will now be good not evil.
JJ & ILM may have a post credit scene ending with Vader's labored breathing sound FX . (dark)
