Where and when did you first see a Star Wars film?

Can you remember? Does that place still exist? What were your feelings at the time?

Here's where I saw a Star Wars film for the first time:

^ This is the present-day Odeon cinema at Port Solent Marina in Portsmouth, England.
It is a six screen multiplex cinema and was built in the early 1990's.

^ These were taken back around 2001, it was still quite new and was originally called a UCI (United Cinemas International) multiplex.

^ But in 1995, there used to be a sign above the doors telling you what films were showing!
(1995: Apollo 13, Species, Clueless, Under Seige 2, Pocahontas, French Kiss, Nine Months)
I think the sign was there in 1999 too, but can't be exactly certain.

On 15th July 1999, I saw Star Wars Episode I : The Phantom Menace there at 14:00 (2pm) on Screen 4. This was the first time I'd ever seen a Star Wars film!

Today is also 15th July, but in 2019 - exactly 20 years later! Which is why I've created this topic thread.

So, where and when did you see Star Wars for the first time?

I don't really know the year anymore, but I was still a little kid. It was Christmas Eve and my older brothers got the VHS box of the OT. In that night I've watched ANH for the first time.

OMG. Found an old video of the brand new UCI Port Solent (Portsmouth) cinema from the early 1990's, presumably on the day it was opened! It mght be 1992.

My first experience with Star Wars came from watching the originals on my dad's VHS player. When the prequels came out, since we were living in a remote village that didn't even have cellphone service until the early 10s, going to cinemas was like a pipe dream for me and all I had was stories from my father back when he was my age. Around 2003, we managed to move to the big city and I remember the sense of excited anticipation I had in finally seeing the Star Wars saga complete. Two years later, Revenge of the Sith came out and my uncle invited me to go and see the movie with him the day after the premiere. I was floored. I was going to finally see a movie on the big screen. It was not only the first time I saw Star Wars in cinemas, but it was also the first time I saw a film in cinemas.

Not everyone has fond memories of Revenge of the Sith and not everyone likes it, but me sitting at the back of the projection hall, watching the iconic Star Wars crawl roll down to John Williams' tune and then seeing the Battle for Coruscant unfold... nothing will ever take that memory away from me.

The cinema has since closed down and the venue was renovated into a mall, but as I mentioned above, it's an experience that I'll treasure forever.

It was RotJ in '83, the movie theater is no longer there though. The mall in town had 2 movie theaters (there was also a theater on the other side of town near the college), one was actually inside the mall and the other was a stand-alone building that was basically in the mall's parking lot. The latter was where we saw it and they tore that down a long time ago. Late 90s, the last movie I remember seeing there was Speed. I miss that theater, I saw most of my favorite movies there.

Dang, I've never seen the OT on big screen. It was FSK 12 in Germany and i was 10 when Rotj hit the theaters. I watched it on TV the first time, later even on dutch TV, which we could receive (englisch with dutch subtitles) so at that time I didn't understand much. I might even still have a vhs recorded from TV somewhere. My first movie at cinema was TPM and overall I liked it. The biggest issue was that the music was way to loud, so I was actually a bit annoyed by John Williams soundtrack that didn't gave us a break for at least a few seconds. I watched it at cinemaxx Essen, but can't remember the date or time.

Technically, it was ANH when I was around 4 or 5. My cousin and I were spending the night at my grandparents house and he, being a huge Star Wars fan, had brought it on VHS for us to watch. I say technically because I barely remember it and thought it was boring so I didn't pay much attention and didn't have any interest in watching the rest of the OT.
The first one I saw in theaters was TPM a couple of years later. My best friends parents took us to see it a couple of months after it came out. We'd begged because it as all over school a new Star Wars was coming out that summer, we weren't even really fans and I'd never watched the OT. I don't remember what theater it was (I was 7) but it was a dollar theater and basically empty. I don't remember much from the experience itself, only that I got kinda scared during the underwater segment and thought pod-racing was the coolest thing ever.

I was 6 going on 7 in August of 1977. My mom took me to see it at a cinema that no longer exists: a 3 screen General Cinema in one of the local shopping malls. I saw all three of the OT films there and still remember standing in line for tickets to see Return of the Jedi. No lines for Empire Strikes Back as we waited a week for the lines to die down a bit.

I have no idea when or where I saw SW for the first time. I've just have a clue.
I suspect that I was around 4 or 5 when I first watched them and probably was with my neighbor, his father was a fan and he used to buy some SW toys.
So that was around 1986 or 1987, I guess.

Just in 1995 when the remastered version was released (and my father bought me the trilogy), is that I started to become more interesed and later on very addictive.

ANH in the town of Grande Cache, Alberta. Age 8 maybe 9. Cinema is long gone.

ESB in Victoria, BC summer 1980 while on family vacation. Theatre still up and running. Beautiful double decker theatre which has been modernized but still retains its old school feel. At that impressionable age it was one of the best cinematic experiences of my life (along with Aliens, Fellowship of the Ring)

I started watching my first Star Wars film (A New Hope) on a cold winters night on August 6th at exactly 10:24 PM... (duel)

Just kidding. I literally don't remember. The last time I recall watching a Star Wars film was when I was around 10 in my parent's basement eating popcorn with my brother. Yeah, not so exciting is it...

My first SW viewing I have a clear memory OF IS ROTJ at my local Odeon Cinema. Although I’m reliably informed I did see ESB at the same cinema plus I would have see both SW & ESB multiple times at home as they were on TV a lot over the Christmas.
@Darth Goon your ESB experience is very similar to my viewing as it shut down in 1993 as JURASSIC PARK was the last film I saw there. Then it was reopened in the summer of 2015 as a independent 1 screen cinema & I have had the pleasure of watching TFA, R1, SOLO & TLJ there & I will absolutely be watching TROS there as well.

    Wait....what???

I saw "Star Wars" in (probably) early June in 1977 at Theater One which still exists, and is a single screen venue in Hardin Montana ....I was 10 years old.

The very first time I saw a Star Wars movie was November 27th, 1988, at my Maternal Grandparents' house. My family had gathered to celebrate both the Thanksgiving holiday and my 8th birthday, and my grandma had a habit of dedicating one room of her house as a 'playroom' of sorts where grandkids could go and watch movies while waiting for dinner to start were they inclined to do so, and I remember wandering into said bedroom while TESB was playing (I'm not sure who asked my grandma to put the film on), getting hooked on the Battle of Hoth, and sitting down and watching the rest of the movie.

I'd known about Star Wars previous to this (having played with the original Kenner action figures when I was younger), but had never seen any of the films.

I saw ANH on TV... I was about 5. Then Empire and ROTJ via VHS tapes. The special editions came out at theaters a couple of years later, so I got to see them all on the silver screen. Because of that, the only Star Wars theatrical release I have not seen in theaters is Solo... I had some really crazy "life happens" moments about the time it came out and I just never got to it. Yep, I even saw the Clone Wars movie in theaters. The only two opening nights I've been to, however, are ROTS and TROS.

For most of my childhood i grew up knowing very little about star wars, only the slight mentions by other classmates and things like that, i had genuine interest in knowing what was this mysterious 'star wars' thing everyone was going crazy about. I expressed my interest to my father, a casual star wars fan. The next day when my dad gets home from work, he shows me this box set of all the star wars movies at that time (Episodes 1-6). The next day was a Saturday so we planned to watch it then. We watched one movie a week using the 4,5,6,1,2,3 viewing order. I remember vividly experiencing this galaxy far far away for the first time and i remember being amazed by the adventures i would witness and being terrified of Palpatines force lightning to the point my dad would have to warn me when it was coming up. It was overall one of the happiest moments of my childhood. Looking forward to the weekend to see where the Skywalker saga would take me. My interest only grew from there and i began to experience star wars in other forms of media such as playing video games like jedi outcast and the force unleashed to pleading my parents to purchase star wars lego sets and even then my interest in star wars only grew and grew and here i am today writing this form on the cantina, i probably wouldn't be writing this here today if i didn't ask my dad about this mysterious star wars and if i had waited any longer to watch star wars, i would probably have wrote if off as being too childish

If I remember right, the first time I saw a Star Wars movie was via VHS and it was The Phantom Menace. And at that time I didn't know the connection bertween TPM and the orginal trilogy.

I was at home, and my dad show me A New Hope. After that we watched the rest of the OT in good time and then The Phantom Menace, the only movies we had on DVD. I rewatched them all countless times. I remember loving A New Hope the first time because it was unlike anything I've ever seen before.

I was 10 when I walked into the Nortown Theater for the 1st showing of the day on a Saturday morning in June 1977. It was only a few blocks from where I lived at the time. I didnt leave until the end of the last show of the day.
