    There are definitely prints in existence because some of them have been privately screened fairly recently haven't they?

    Just to throw this into the mix - and I can't provide a source - but wasn't there some issue regarding Lucas' settlement with Marcia here? Along the lines of she would stand to get loads of cash from any further proper releases of the original films, and the "Special Editions" provided a loophole whereby they were technically seen as a separate entity and therefore she could not profit from them. Same with putting the OOT out as a "bonus disc".
    Might be total BS, but it kind of made sense to me wherever and whenever I read that...
