I don't have a source inside J. J.'s mystery box so I don't have anyone to ask, except myself. But I DO have myself, and obviously the Force and me are a lot alike. We're both incredibly tall, amazingly sexy, god-like, and humble. So it's safe to assume the Force wakes up for the same reasons I do, at least on weekends. Somehow I doubt the Force sets an alarm clock and goes to work each weekday.

Why do I wake up on weekends?

Mostly to beg my wife for early morning sex, but that's a little too much honesty. Let's start with #2 on the list.

    2. The kids are fighting right outside my bedroom door about who ate all the marshmallows out of the Lucky Charms box.

    3. The kids saw a glimpse of blue sky and are begging me to take them to the beach for the day. In February.

    4. I remembered there's still a slice of banana cream pie in the fridge and know I have to get to it before the kids wake up or I'll never see it again.

    5. To check the StarWars7news.com website to see what insanity Willybobo's using for his latest status update.

So why DOES the Force awaken? I know we've had threads on what it means, but we've never really asked why. Why now? Why not during the rule of the Jedi or the Sith? Why not when Force-sensitive beings were numerous?

Does the fact that Anakin killed nearly every Force-sensitive being in the Galaxy necessitate an awakening? Or is it a new threat?

Maybe there's only so much Force in the Galaxy, spread thin by the existence of so many Force-sensitive beings, and now that 99% of them are dead, the remnant inherits the whole shebang?

Does the Force suddenly peak every 10,000 years or so, for no reason we can understand, and bless the Force-sensitive beings alive at the time with powers that stagger the imagination?

Let's have some fun with this. Why does the Force awaken? And why do YOU wake up?

The Force awakens to give us something to talk about until it actually awakens.

Well, it could simply be that at the time EP7 takes place, there is a famine of force users if you will. As if to say that when all of the jedi were killed off, and Luke being gone, the force has simply gone into hibernation. With no users to activate it, it simply took a long nap so to speak. Like Hey I'm the force I'm "for sale" but there are no "buyers". So now its like a black market with transactions being few and far between.

Anthony Daniels: I think [The Force Awakens is] a very good title. It's in the spirit of The Phantom Menace...Attack of the Clones...You know, it makes you think. So, where has the force been? What makes it wake up? Why does this happen? But, you know, I don't want to spoil any of the surprise...

Almost makes you think "the force" is a person or entity...villainous...like the "phantom menace"...

I remember when the title first came out I theorized that Force could have multiple meanings, and I used the Phantom Menace like you did here.

Now as to why the Force is awakening, it just got a good look at the texts it sent from the night before and it has to send out a bunch of explanations before going back to sleep.... oh wait that's me

Now assuming we are talking about the Force in a sense of the all powerful force that controls everything perhaps it awakens as an entity in its own. No longer will it influence the world through the Jedi, it will actively bring about change. Perhaps Rey becomes a conduit for the force itself, that would be interesting and not at all like Avatar which I've been watching for the past week.

Now I hate even bringing up the concept of religion but there is an analogy I can use from my studies in Ancient Mesopotamian/Levant religions

In early Jewish religious writing, such as the book of Genesis in the Torah, you see two distinct representations of the deity. There is Elohim, the god of Genesis 1, who is a disembodied all powerful being, but YHVH (Yahweh) of Genesis 2 and 3 is described as moving and functioning like a person, shaping things with hands whereas Elohim shapes reality with his voice. So in a sense the Force may be transitioning from an Elohim to a Yahweh

eXCELLENT REPLIES SO (stupid CAPS LOCK key!)

Excellent replies so far, and I've slapped all of you with likes. Good ideas. Keep 'em coming!

My own theory is that the Force was split in two. Since both the Jedi and the Sith operated under a "kill the other guy on sight, no questions asked" mentality, no cooperation between the two sides was possible. The Jedi could only go so deep into the Force before their lack of passion stopped them from going further; the Sith could only dive in as deep as their selfishness and greed allowed them.

Anakin/Vader destroyed the two sides, reducing them each to zero, bringing balance to the Force. But I think he also opened the door for a new type of Force user to appear - one that combines the passions of the Sith with the compassion of the Jedi, one who can embrace the whole Force, not just the half his or her faction recognizes.

And I think - or at least I hope - we'll see in Episode VII that the whole Force is many times greater than the sum of its two factions. That, when united, the Force is so powerful that every instance of Force use we saw in the first six episodes will seem asleep by comparison.

I'm talking Force Unleashed type powers. The kind of stuff that justifies Vader's claim "The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant compared to the power of the Force." Let's be honest - if the ability to destroy a planet is insignificant compared to the power to levitate some rocks in a backwater swamp, we're talking a very uninhabited planet. But since we're talking Alderaan, and since Vader says "insignificant", then there must be Force powers so uber, so awe-inspiring, so freakin' cool, that only J. J. and Darth Mickey , um, yeah. You get the picture.

When a Force user is free from the limits imposed by the Sith and the Jedi, when all the passionate intensity of the Dark Side combine with all the selfless nobility of the Light, when the entire Force is undivided and available to the characters in the ST, then we can say the Force has Awakened.

As for me? I'm sleeping in :)

My assumption is that Vader is not referring to any godlike power that a single living being or group can conjure out of the Force, but instead the power of the Force in itself, as a magical ocean of life energy and the cosmic web that holds reality together. The Force's peripheral energies via Midi-Chlorians are accessible because they infuse all lifeforms, but the grand, incalculable extent of its importance remains beyond the ken of all. The Great Mystery - omnipotent, enigmatic, fundamental.

Ah, the great mystery. I love the above thoughts. Great stuff. Obviously we can go in all directions. One being, Luke rebuilt the order of sorts (not to how it was but basically just taking padawans and getting the ball rolling) and since there's the confirmation of padawans in the film that's an obvious reason. Maybe A little TOO obvious. It could be the Ancient Villian awakening and causing the Dark Side to Re-emerge and Luke needing to stop it after some period of isolation and needing to Awaken his own Abilities and purpose and Look! it's Vader! " Yeah..a little TOO Vader" sorry, my mind went to an Old Turtles Movie.Anyways, the awakening could simply mean that the new generation of Force users make it a generalized awakening in the "Ancient Religion". But, I think J.J. Is going to make sure that this title works in many ways. Most likely a combination of Awakenings that makes you want to throw Underworld in there just to add to the plethora of things Awakening. But really, I think it will be a combo of an awakening of a new generation of Force users, some sort of Ancient entity awakening, the force "awakening" in Luke again and maybe just maybe in the style of Jackass Luke busts into Hans room with Chewie holding a camera with the screen shaking as Luke lifts a bucket of water of Hans head with the force and dumps it yelling "The Force Awakens Vhlor!" And that spins off the rest of the trilogy of pranks using the force. Ah, Star Wars is back.

The reason why the force has awakened because it is it's 10 year calling, the alarm clock tick tocking for that length time was up.

Interesting stuff. It sounds an awful lot like the Son and Daughter from Mortis. Are they awakening? Is the Force simply awakening in other people? Is it a new threat? A double meaning? A triple meaning? Can't wait to find out ...

    It awakened, smelling the bacon.
