I am having a lot of deja vu from back in the prequel days. I remember how much hate the prequels received. Now all the hate people had for George Lucas has been transferred to Kathleen Kennedy and Rian Johnson. Its all very unfortunate.

However, Revenge of the Sith ended up being considered the best of the prequels. Even the harshest critics of the prequels, I assume, consider ROTS to be the least worst of the trilogy.

I believe the same will happen with Episode IX. The last final ST film will be the best. No matter how much people hate the direction of the ST, I think most fans will at least like Episode IX more than the other two.

Is this a safe assumption to make?

You assume wrong. RotS, for me, is the second least worst of the PT.

As for your question, my answer is this: I sure hope so!

I can only speak for myself.

The bar is low, so it's quite possible for me. TLJ diminishes TFA in my opinion, now the question is does it manage to drag down IX, or does IX elevate the trilogy? I think I could be a mixed bag. If it doubles down on TLJ, then for me it won't work. If it adds exposition to TLJ (which to me is the biggest problem with the ST as a whole), then it might make the ST more palatable for me, but it could anger other fans. In short, I don't think there's a clear and clean victory here. Some fans will love whatever it entails, but some fans on both sides of the divide have hung their acceptance of this series either for or against what TLJ presented us. Undoing, or exposition I think are hills certain fans are willing to die on for this trilogy.

I've stated many times before, I don't know if they should even bother to try and please those who dislike this trilogy. Maybe this one just isn't for us. I think it's possible that this is a situation where they give the fans who already appreciate this trilogy what they want and come back in the future with a trilogy that will satisfy more fans in the future, learning from the experience of this trilogy.

For me the best prequel is TPM. All of the movies failed to me but I can't stand Yoda and Palpatine with a saber, the digital clonetroopers and the bad dialogues (specially AOTC). TPM at least is fun to watch.

And for me it will be hard to beat TLJ (a masterpiece in my opinion), but if JJ delivers something excellent as TFA its good enough to me.

To be the best of the trilogy I think IX needs to accomplish two things: a) to please the OT fans; and b) to have that spark, good humour, action and energy of TFA, which JJ has proved more than once that he can accomplish. Mix in a good dose of thrilling moments, and I think you'd have a formula for success.

I think Lucasfilm has proved, to a good extent, that it knows how to please the hardcore OT fans with Rogue One and Solo. You just need to capture that again and deliver a balanced mix of old and new on IX, and OT fans, like me, will be happy. As for the casual and mass audience, I believe JJ has proved that it can deliver a good spectacle that will put you at the edge of your seat. So, that seems covered, and was probably one of the main reasons why he was hired to do VII and now IX.

So, I'm positive that IX will be a great episode, possibly the best of the ST trilogy and probably one of the best in the SW Skywalker saga. After all, it's the last impressions of a journey that last and make you remember and qualify the whole experience. They know that, so I'm confident that we'll have one of the best SW episodes ever.

the only assumption i'm comfortable making is that time needs to pass before bothering to make a list of favorites.

on this day 38 years ago, people were still of the opinion that ESB was 'weird' and 'stupid'. right after ROTJ released in 83 everyone was saying that ESB was their favorite. after a few years passed - people started referring to ESB as a masterpiece.

when i left the theater after seeing AOTC on opening night i was raving on about how brilliant it was.. nowadays i thinks it's... meh.

what anyone says at this stage is kinda moot when you consider what happened all those decades ago, and that we still have one movie to see yet.

we need to get our collective asses to the theater on opening night, enjoy the experience of being there for the final movie of the saga.. and then let it all sink in before putting them in some sort of definitive order.

we may all think we know what we like and dislike, but it's amazing how time passing can change our opinions.

I hope that Episode IX will be the best one of the trilogy because it is the one that is supposed to tie up the whole saga. I've enjoyed the sequel trilogy so far, I really hope that J.J. knocks this one out of the park and give the Skywalker family a proper send-off that they so deserve.

If they get the storyline right it will be the best of the ST. That's paramount here and is what's been my biggest hang-up thus far -- the storylines (esp. TLJ) have been riddled with holes and are, quite frankly, a sloppy mess. And the fact that RJ basically dismissed the setups JJ introduced, opting for awkward slapstick humor and flashy (yet admittedly impressive) explosions and shiny objects at the expense of character development, has especially hurt the cohesiveness of the ST. My fear is JJ must now "fix" or tie-up the numerous loose ends that RJ didn't bother to (or did so poorly -- watching for retcon-ing closely come December!). So in effect, the biggest plot lines that were presented in TFA must now be addressed and answered in two movies, not three, making TLJ some odd excursion plopped right in the middle that didn't move the story forward; basically, JJ had one type of SW movie in mind and RJ had another. Both could exist in-universe but don't work back-to-back in the saga films.

I guess the tonal differences should have been expected with different writers/directors/storytellers. Love or hate what Lucas did throughout his six movies, there was never any doubt who's ultimate vision was being represented. That tonal consistency (which I never considered until after TFA/TLJ) was so important in stringing a six-part episodic adventure into a cohesive story (yes, there are a few wart in there, but it worked on the macro level).

Obviously, this is all IMHO and God knows I'm no movie maker. Just a fan. And sorry if my rant strayed off-topic.

I think IX has a real chance of being the best film of the ST. I really enjoy both TFA and TLJ, but there is room for trilogy capper that really exceeds expectations. I can't wait to see what JJ delivers.

I think there was a big difference with the PT, Lucas purposely saved all of the major plot points for Episode 3. He admitted that he split the PT plot points up 20% Episode 1, 20% Episode 2, 60% Episode 3. So you could say Episode 1 & 2 were the setup and Episode 3 was the payoff, so naturally that was going to be the more popular movie cause most fans wanted the red meat of Anakin turning to Vader, and The Empire seizing power.

Episode 9 is actually sort of the opposite as we left off Episode 8 and the Trilogy was resetting as many major plot points had been settled (Luke and Snoke were dead, Rey found out her heritage and is the new Hope and Kylo Ren has assumed the lead villain.

For me so far, the ST movies have worked better as standalones and I assume Episode 9 will feel that way too. If I watch TFA and TLJ as their own entity, I enjoy them cause they’re well made movies. If I watch then as Episode 7 & 8 of the Saga, the narrative crumbles and they just don’t work on that level.

Well let's put it this way:

If you're a fan of E7 over E8, you'll probably like E9 more than E8 as well. So then it's a matter of choosing between E7 and E9.
    If you're a fan of E8 over E7, you'll probably prefer E8 over E9.

JJ is a huge fan of the KOR and before he came back to direct EPIX he wanted to make a KOR movie. But...
... it's pretty much confirmed that they will appear in the movie.

I remember back then when TFA was released and we still had Colin Treverrow directing EPIX, I always predicted my personal ranking of the ST would be:
    1) TLJ
    2) TFA
    3) IX

But then TLJ was released, Colin left IX and JJ came back. Now my prediction is quite different:
    1) TFA
    2) IX
    3) TLJ

Of course there is potential for IX being the best one though...
