As many of us know, one of the main complaints about the prequels was there was no protagonist for the most part. During The Phantom Menace we were torn between two emotionally unavailable characters, before being put into the shoes of a little kid.. This hurt the film badly in my opinion. The whole thing should have centered around Obi Wan.

Then there was Attack Of The CGI.. Oops I meant Clones.. Where a brand new actor came along for Anakin, it was pretty confusing for the audience as the film focused on mainly on Anakin but also gave us some alone time with Obi Wan too, the film still never planted it's feet on the ground.

Same thing happened with Revenge Of The Sith, and just as new viewers felt more at home with Anakin.. BAM! He's turned into some super emo sith schutta. So some of us felt even more strongly that it should have focused on Obi Wan, it's difficult to relate to a guy who kills duckings or whatever they're called.. Decent film nonetheless.

So will The Force Awakens focus solely on one character? I believe it will be split between Rey and Finn for the most part. If Disney wants to play it safe.. They will have it spread out like The Phantom Menace, then expand on the characters the audience like most for VIII.
If they're being more ballsy (hopefully they are) then the film could be very much focused around one character instead.

Personally i'd like to see Rey presented as the definite protagonist, with Poe and Finn as secondary characters, then a fourth protagonist who has his own narrative which goes alongside the rest of the action.. Luke Skywalker.

Imagine we have the main story, then the film cuts to Luke a few minutes at a time, as he's getting advice from Obi Wan etc, fighting off a big creature causing trouble near his castle.. All while he's unaware what the other characters are going through. I don't want the protagonist of the original trilogy to end being this mysterious Yoda-like character, I would like to continue seeing the galaxy through Luke's eyes.. Just for a little bit before before the torch is passed on. It would make for a smoother transition from Return Of The Jedi too.

SW has always been an ensemble production.

Short answer: For TFA? No. I think it'll follow along with the OT in which Luke, while established as a hero in ANH, wasn't quite as distinguishable as he ended up becoming in the remaining two films. I expect a group of main protagonists for TFA, and possibly one that goes on to outshine the rest for episodes VIII and IX.

I agree, but I can also see the direction Fartkraum is coming from. The OT features the ensemble cast of protagonists, but Luke does an overall better job of outshining the others when you consider it as a whole... at least better than Anakin did in the PT.
