Plot holes aren't the same as unresolved questions. After watching ANH were the following plot holes? Who is Luke's mom? How did Han meet Chewie? Where did Han get the falcon?

I feel like many think plots hole are anything they don't like or any unresolved question.

To me, a plot hole is a contradiction in the plot. In dragon ball, a character dreams about a character they have never met. This is a plot hole. In Superman returns, we see superman turn into a wimp around kryptonite and then fly away with a mountain of it on his back minutes later. If Finn wasn't in the room when "the thing happens on the catwalk", but he then somehow new instantly with no one telling him, that would be a plot hole.

Maz having the lightsaber and saying "that is a story for another time" was a stupid part of the film to me too, but not a plot hole.

Also, to the original poster, I think you're confused by the "show not tell" aspect of storytelling.

You do realize that by having Luke and Rey not speak dialogue, that was literally showing and not telling. You complained through your this thread about JJ doing too much telling and not enough showing. The ending was the definition of him showing us the moment. Not telling us what happened with cheap words.

Same goes for the opening scene, Poe escaping Jakku, the Rey force vision, Rey's parentage...etc.

So, I'm confused. Are you saying you need more telling, and less showing in your stories? If so, go watch Transformers.

i'm just pissed i never saw the first conversation between Luke and Obi-Wan. all we got was that shitty interaction when he saves Luke's life from the sand people. such a huge plot hole.

seriously though, @Unseen , i think the ending was a little jarring and i can totally dig where you're coming from. with that being said, i think that leaving it without a bigger scene gave TFA a really powerful ending that put a lot of propulsion into ep. 8, which is incredible given the fact that there is no dialogue. it challenges you to think of where the story is going instead of where it had been. i don't care who you are, that's called good film making.

as for you, @SKB , don't go slagging off Americans like you know all about their culture. "oh, but i know an American, i have friends that are American!" lol it doesn't make it ok! :p

Seen it twice now. Enjoyed the first time and even better the 2nd. I think the best thing about the film was rey finn and Kylo wren, bb8, po. New characters. It shows that Star Wars is not just about the original characters anymore. A new hope didn't answer a lot of questions but that doesn't make it a bad film. It set the tone of what was to follow. I think episode 7 does the same. Can't wait for episode 8.

    That is correct.
Now we just need to clarify what exactly is a plot. This differs from a movie to a book, because in a movie the narrative is bound to the visuals as well.

Finn on Jakku is a plot hole, the movie contradicts itself later on, as he declares he was stationed on starkiller as a nurse. He shouldn't be there. The bit dialogue between Hux and Phasma makes it even harder to understand why he could be in Phasmas group and at the same time stationed as sanitarian on starkiller base.
I now about the novel and Finns story, which doesn't change the fact of the contradiction in the movie.

There are more but they aren't really that important at example the Laser-fire, as i said a movie differs from a book, in TFA the outcome of a Laser-blast is at times only determined by the target not the weapon in association with the target.
Same goes for the Rathar not killing Finn instantly. A visual contradiction in the story.

Everything i just wrote didn't interfere with my suspension of disbelief. This is really nitpicking and I wouldn't answer any questions regarding those, because those things happen in nearly every movie. I'm not criticizing these things, but there are plot holes in TFA.

What Rian really should think about the next time are those "in your face" storytelling devices(R2), music, pace and perhaps characterization. Han btw is at times dumb in TFA, which contradicts his own character. R2 is NOT a plot hole, but far more harmful to the viewing experience. If it wasn't, Entertainment weekly would never have published the article regarding that point. I knew it was coming and even wrote it here.

On Topic, because i feel like I'm trolling, I don't like and need too much dialogue in a movie, but I'm rather alone with that. However the ending scene was a powerful one because of NO dialogue. Do I need Luke and Reys first conversation? Again, no i don't. I witnessed their first communication, which is the beauty of a movie and can never happen in a book.

    phone conversation circa 2013:

Arndt: "I'm having a problem, JJ. Everytime I put Luke in any scene with Rey or Finn, he upstages them."
JJ: "Put him in a cave, or better yet, on a deserted island. He'll appear at the end of the film, and won't have any dialogue."
Arndt: "That would solve the issue, sure, but it will also upset a lot of Luke fans who are expecting him to play an active role in in the movie"
JJ: "So what? What's most important, what's critical, is that they connect with Rey and Finn and care about their journey."
    Arndt: "M'kay JJ....."

Nurse? That's not in the movie. Also, like real-life soldiers, Stormtroopers have base duties when not in combat. Finn's was sanitation. When not in battle/combat, he worked in sanitation at the base. That doesn't mean he wasn't a top-notch soldier, too. In fact, in the Before the Awakening prequel novel, Finn is portrayed a top recruit.
Also, it's stated in the movie twice that the Jakku massacre was Finn's first major conflict. He and the entire FN cadre had been a trainees until that point.
Also, Finn wasn't in Phasma's "group." She's in charge of all Stormtroopers. It just happened that on the day of the Jakku massacre, both Phasma and Finn were on duty.

Maybe americans need a happy end, but ESB had a cliffhanger ending too. (it was accepted)
I know it's act two and normally the middle of a trilogy always end this way.
Maybe it would have been a better choice if TFA would have the ending of a stand alone movie.

But to end the movie with a cliffhanger is not a bad decision either, because...

Rian Johnson has a good opportunity to spin something new out of it, he can decide which way he wants go to from there.
I see this cliffhanger as a starting point and in my opinion the ST starts at the ending of TFA in finding Luke.

First off, (this is confirmed), before they left Ireland, they shot another sequence for episode 8, in the same location. So i'm assuming we will get a flashback or start relatively close to where we left off.
And in that final scene, they didn't need to talk. Both of them intensely staring into each others eyes was much more powerful than, "Hey i'm Rey, teach me the ways of the force". Personally, i would like to see their first interaction too, but if i don't (which is what it think will happen), i am completely content

Secondly, the "plot holes". There are some plot holes yes, but most of these "plot holes" that i see people complaining about, are unanswered questions. Yes this movie left us with more questions than answers, but that's what this movie had to do. I love how people say this movie is a carbon copy of "A New Hope", and then proceed to complain about all the unanswered questions. If people don't recall, we were left with quite a few questions after A New Hope, and where were they answered? In Empire! I guarantee our biggest questions will be answered in Episode 8. I promise.

Thirdly, the originial characters. Yes i too believe they could have been handled, better, but by no means were they handled terribly. Leia was, ok. The few times she was on screen, it was meaningful and powerful.
    Chewie was fantastic. Period.
    C3P0 was great as well.
R2, meh, didn't make much sense but it was good to see him again, especially him, C3P0 and BB-8 interacting, so good.
Now, to Han. I was going into this film expecting to see old (crystal skull) Harrison Ford, but no. We got Han freaking Solo. He just as Han Solo-y as any of the OT. And i was ok with his death. It was meaningful in some ways, but unmeaningful at the same time. I saw his death coming from a mile away, but even that couldn't have prepared me for watching a saber go through his chest. And Chewies scream afterwards is really what opened the floodgates for me :(

In my opinion, the original characters were handled great. (would love to hear why you thought they were handled terribly) BUT, this is not a story about the original cast. This is about the new generation of Star Wars characters, JJ has already made us fall in love with. Rey, Finn, Poe, BB-8, Kylo Ren etc. This movie is about THEM.
By the way tell me what you mean by magic droid (assuming how R2 turned on suddenly at the end), and magic X-Wing???

People and media are so critical these days it sometimes makes me sad. I bet you could find at least a couple "plot holes"/unanswered questions in the original trilogy.
Kinda strayed away from the main topic, which is to do with Rey and Luke's final scene. And my answer to your question, and the answer i am sure most of the real star wars fans would give, is yes. I would be ok if i didn't see Rey and Luke's first conversation. ;)

They have already filmed scenes with Hamill and Ridley on Skellig Michael for Episode 8. So one can assume things pick up fairly soon afterwards and there is no time gap like there was in between 4-5.

I think the problem is (mostly because of me, I admit) this thread has turned into several topics.

I'm not confused. Poe magically reappeared at the end of the movie. It was explained or "told" in a throw away line to Finn. See, JJ etc decided at the last minute to keep Poe as a main character. Rather than rework the script, they have him show up at the end and just "tell" away the problem. (Still not sure how or why he took off his jacket) ***And yes people, this is a plot hole. This was maybe the laziest twist in Star Wars history. "Oh no, I was fine. I knew BB8 was fine, so I came home and here I am. Oh hey, that's my jacket" ....and you are going to tell me to go watch Transformers??

This is classic JJ. His movies are so rushed, that he doesn't think anyone will notice. They are fast, they are fun, but pretty stupid. They require you suspend logic or at least to ignore their flaws.

Another example is the early reveal of Han as Kylo's father. A better writing team and director could have played with the reveal, built suspense.

Or how much information Han/Leia had about the academy destruction and Snoke. Or Han saying "I think he went to find the Jedi temple"...really Han? Why do you think that? He sent newsletters for a while?

Han and Leia certainly had enough information to "tell" the audience, but not enough to even attempt to save their son.

Or how Hux awkwardly tells Kylo (who clearly already knew this) that Stormtroopers are raised from birth.

JJ forces things into his dialogue to educate the audience. He "tells".

My point with the final scene wasn't about TFA specifically as much as it was about the saga. I love the Rey character (see, this is where people can have nuance. I can admit there were great things in the movie...but the lovers/fanboys can't admit the faults).

Anyway, I love Rey and I love Luke. I think it is crazy (and pretty crappy) we miss their first scene together.

It honestly didn't hit me until last night. I felt cheated. I honestly expected even people who loved the movie to say "yeah, that is pretty wierd"

If you think of the saga as a whole, it is filled with important meetings and introductions. Ben, Leia, Yoda, Annakin with no mask, etc.

This one, we won't get to see.

Unless they break tradition in 8, which is also wierd.

I guess I didn't think the hype had such a hold on people that they wouldn't even be able to admit this. Instead, I get "it was great"..."those looks said everything"...."what would they even say to each other?"....

    basically, BS excuses.

Now, I wasn't clear. I'm not saying TFA should have ended with Luke and Rey chatting over a cup of coffee. I'm saying their first meeting should have been sooner in the film, or saved for 8.

Because, again, I think that is a huge moment for the saga. Especially if she is his daughter.

It also puts 8 in a very awkward position. Does it skip the crawl and pick up right at that scene? Does it pick up a year later and the audience is supposed to adjust until that awkward "hey, I've been keeping something from you"? Is it done in a flashback? Puts 8 at a disadvantage in my opinion.

I'm fine with Cliffhangers, I'm fine with secrets and questions. As I said, I think secrets and unfolding plots are part of what made the OT great.

But there are a lot more than unaswered question in TFA. And it didn't really end on a cliffhanger, just a sh!tty ending.

And ending, that again, most people hated when everyone thought Jason Ward was lying. Now its great.

Groupthink is fascinating. I think people are hyped to see Star Wars again. Especially fun star wars. I think we all (well, most) fell in love with the new characters and the new cast. The movie was fast and mostly fun.

There is this hype around it unlike any other movie. JJ seems like a nice enthusiastic guy.

I truly believe all of this is preventing people from really examining this thing critically, under the same lense the prequels were examined. And preventing people from even saying

"I enjoyed it. The ending wasn't my favorite. I'm bummed Han never met up with Luke" etc. Like, have actual nuance to the discussion rather than...."Crybabies!!! This is up there with Empire haters!!!"

Like I said, I figured even if you loved the film you can at least admit you would love to hear what they say to each other. (Remember, this thing STARTED as a search for Luke. That was in the damn crawl. It turned into (hello plot hole, bad writing, whatever) something else...until R2 regains the will to live (really prequel haters?? You are okay with R2 losing the will to live??? I wonder if JJ was trolling you guys on that to see how much he could get away with)

So, we get back on track to the reason of this whole damn movie...silence, credits.

    "Their looks said everything!"

No, they didn't. They should have met earlier or saved it for 8 ESB style.
    --- Double Post Merged, Dec 23, 2015, Original Post Date: Dec 23, 2015 ---
I don't think I have accused it of being a carbon copy of ANH. They did try to recreate that feeling, but even lord JJ has said that himself.

To your OT character question. You are right Chewie was great, and C3PO was hilarious. <<<< see, not all black and white people. Not "hating".

My problem is that the big three went backwards. Something terrible happens and the academy is attacked.

Even though they have faced terrible things before-

Luke give up and hides. Sits back and lets planets be destroyed, Han die, etc. Just chillin. After all he has been through, all he has accomplished, he just sits back and lets all of this happen without even trying. Because, wait for it, he felt guilty. And/or maybe his wife died. Too bad Han, too bad Leia, Ben, billions of people. Luke is in a mopy mood.

Han gives up. Goes back to smuggling, and smuggling poorly. Doesn't leave the Republic to track down his son at all costs. Or find Luke. Or find out more about the dark side. He just shrugs and starts hauling space zoo animals. Han is kind of pathetic in this movie. No one wants to admit because he dies, but the Han we meet is a worse person than the one we met in ANH.

Leia...still staring at a screen. Not seemingly all that upset about what has happened, just there to give a blank stare and important plot information.

And they all gave up on Ben Solo. They fought Vader for years, redeemed him after 20+ years of evil...but all shrug at Ben Solo going bad.

Now, had it been "I thought he was dead" maybe it is slightly more believable. But that would have required some work on the script. It couldn't be accomplished by "your father, Han Solo ..."

Oh, and R2 lost the will to live.

    Better than Empire!!!!! Go JJ!!!!

There's zero chance Rey learns of her parentage off screen, so I really like the ending. Powerful visual.
