One of the most iconic scenes of Episode IV is the entrance into the cantina in Mos Eisley. The music, the aliens, the lighting, etc are meant to put us into the shoes of Luke and show us that the world is far larger than we ever imagined. I consider it one of the greatest scenes ever made all time in any movie and the feeling it invokes has never been repeated.

So in regards to TFA, what are you thoughts towards any scene invoking the the feelings of "this is but one part of a massive world" that the cantineain ANH invoked in all of us. It is something I felt was lacking in the PT, and in fairness in ESB and RTJ as well. The ANH Cantina is one of the greatest sources of inspiration for imagination in decades and I like to dream that maybe TFA can catch just a piece of that magic

Well, the larger world has already been established... I think that the angle may be: ordinary characters joining that Larger World we all know and love. Like.... these are casual and ordinary characters not worthy of filling the shoes of Luke, Han and Leia... but at the end.... yes, they do.

I always imagined being a starship pilot who escapes the hot Tatooine suns and sits down for a meal and good music at the Mos Eisley Cantina. :)

Great post, my favourite part of the saga too. I hope J.J. steers more towards A New Hope than Empire.

Yeah, me too—I heard their bantha tacos are awesome. Plus, all their ingredients are organic and locally sourced from farms inside the solar system.

I agree with the cantina being such a cool moment in the SW films. I think another moment in the OT that really showed us just how the SW universe is large and you never know what to expect was Luke's arrival on dagobah and meeting yoda. None of if was what you expected the first time you saw ESB and I thought that was so awesome. It's another reality check moment when you realize this isn't our universe. The Jedi master isn't a jacked Japanese karate master looking guy or something you'd see in an action movie. He's a 3 foot tall 900 year old alien. That's part of what the force is about just like yoda describes to luke. I'm hoping the ST expands our knowledge of what is possible in a similar way.

I remember there was rumor of a cantina scene floating around a while ago, though everything seems to have been quiet on that since then. It's a possibility that could be the scene you speak of, provided Rey or any of the other rumored people have never ventured further. That seems unlikely though.

I can think of three things that might be the iconic scene. Note that I'll be going off the more realistic sounding speculation and rumor that has flown around.

First, if Finn (I'm going the safe route here) has somehow been an Imperial since birth, knowing nothing but the life he was bred to and lies he was told, meets people supposed to be "the enemy" who are in fact good (Rey, Han, etc.) it might open his eyes.
Second, I could see a scene in which Rey (assuming she has been on the desert planet her whole life) is brought by Han to the Rebel base. She lived her life around destroyed, dead machines. Now she'll get to see some of those same (or similar) machines "alive" and in their glory. Yeah and a bunch of Alliance officials doing official Alliance stuff, etc.
Third, the blue lightsaber scene. When it is first ignited. The description of that possible scene had "larger world" written all over it.

I guess all that I'm hoping for is that tingle you get when you watch the original trilogy. That sense of wonder that you get and I still get to this day.

the one problem I see is that the actors then didn't know what was before them, they weren't conscious of themselves they didn't even know if the movie was going to be any good.

everyone is so aware of the mythology now, there so aware what came before that I hope that they can capture that innocence and that sort of bravado and sort of youthful indiscretion without becoming too teenager-y like Hayden did in the PT.

I just think that taking us back to the original universe is what I feel most excited for. While I like both the PT and OT, sometimes I feel like they are different universes because of the vast differences in how everything looks. Only when Anakin, as a padawan, went back to Tattooine to find his mother did I actually feel like I was in the Star Wars universe of old. I think a direct combination of the two that makes the PT and OT feel intertwined will be the moment for me. Where I can say. “Now it all fits”

Yeah I agree, I love that ambience. I really hope TFA has enough ambience, where the movie slows down and introduces something new/mysterious and lets you use your imagination.

I'm hoping for an appearance of a mysterious villain who knows the darkside, like the emperor. When you see him all cloaked and mysterious, calm, and you just know he's somehow the most powerful/ most evil. Another awesome thing was how the emperor was just all cloaked wearing black robes, contrasting all the futuristic technology and everything around him, the soldiers, etc. Something about it was just awesome.
