Disney and the lack of creativity...?

Discussion in 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' started by John Crichton, Feb 25, 2015.

?

Do you feel Disney is relying too much on Ralph McQuarrie's concept art?

  1. No. They are justified in using design influences from the original series.

  2. Yes. They are copying everything done in the 70s/80s since they cannot create anything on their own

You don't happen to have or know of a place with the stills of the super-high quality version of the teaser, do you?

    I haven't downloaded it, and I know of this site > http://www.jedinews.co.uk/images/galleries/TFA_Teaser_Nov2014/default.asp
but those aren't very good quality.

I think though we will get a very good Star Wars film, we need to get some of the greatest creative minds involved for the design of episode VIII and episode IX to put some brand new ideas in, maybe some of the concept artists from films such as Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy 2 etc.. Some of the stranger things which came out of Hollywood in recent years.

Relying on Ralph's designs is both a conservative decision and a wise one, but they need to keep the audience guessing as to the vastness of the Star Wars universe. We need new planets and new species' added for each film, and the plot should aim to break conventions like A New Hope did.

Someone mentioned that Doug Chiang is involved for the sequels, that's amazing.. Not only were his designs the best part of the prequels but some of the prequel DNA will carry through to the sequel trilogy.

I may dislike the prequels to an extent, but I wouldn't want to see them be betrayed and left out. The original designs for them were solid.

I like it if they are using some of McQuarrie's stuff. I think that using his work and having new stuff is not mutually exclusive. This is a big movie and there is plenty of room for both and I would suspect that is what we are going to see.

I started a thread this summer regarding the fact that the OT worked back then because the technology displayed in the movie made little boys and girls dream of what the future could look like... many of us were inspired in trying to make the SW techno a reality, and succeeded :) It was techno, it was the future.

The Prequel failed on that matter because it wasn't neither retro of futuristic... it was just,...well, the prequels. Showing neet stuff on screen, 1999-2005, we were already in the future.

The Sequel trilogy... it had to go either full techno or retro.... and I think it was safer and easier for Disney to go retro with this movie. Expect huge luminous switch, guns thats go pfiewww pfieww, ships that look like it was designed in the 70s...

I personally am not bothered by whether it is original(term used loosely) or not. I just hope it looks like Star Wars in a way that the prequels didn't. I like the prequels and even love some of the designs but overall something about the aesthetic was off for me.

I personally like the fact that they are using McQuarrie's work as a base for TFA . I think the people behind the movie are creative enough to add some new and very exciting elements, but we will still get the same look and feel of the Star Wars we all love.

I would love to see Chopper as Lando's droid, somewhere in the new trilogy...

There's a bunch of concept artists working on TFA and the initial memo they got about using McQuarrie as their foundation was a great call. McQuarrie has strong timeless designs which incorporate primitive shapes that last forever like roman or Egyptian architecture. His stuff also looks real and real cool.

I must admit, they had one or two episodes that were pure "meh" at the beginning of the year, but the last ones have been particularly entertaining. Especially now that we have Tarkin back, and someone in real peril spanning a few episodes.

Whoops, forgot to add the text before hitting "post". :D

I can't recall if we've ever truly got anything that was 100% McQuarrie, so basically they're doing the same thing that was done for the OT -- take an existent idea and mold it to fit perfectly with what they're doing. I agree with that direction, and think that even with using old artwork it still allows for much variety.

I think the simple explanation behind using McQuarrie concepts is to bring back the Star Wars/nostalgic feeling from the OT.

I agree. What I saw some people saying is that Disney is using it for everything, recycling old discarded ideas, and in some cases using exactly what was in the concept art shows instead of adapting it themselves.

Personally I'm fine with them using his stuff as a basis, so long as it meshes fine with the movie, which it should perfectly. I worry more about them reusing old EU ideas than I do them using McQuarrie's stuff.

It makes sense to use Ralph's work as a Basis. The Empire is still around and oppressing, the Civil War is still going on, poverty and suffering are abundant, people don't have money and time to make things beautiful in the galaxy. Besides, everything seems to take place away from civilized regions of space.
