I would call it rehash for these reasons (which I'm sure have been expressed in a thousand threads all over this board):
Bad guy with mask looking for info. Info hidden in droid. Droid finds hero Force kid in the desert. Kid needs to get droid to good guys. Kid runs into Old man who helps teach her/him some stuff about the Force/World. Old guy gets killed by masked Bad guy. Tiny fighters take out big evil space ball.

Now TPM also used several of these plot points...so I guess that makes TFA a double-rehash.

If all those things 'scream Star Wars' then you are disproving your argument. That means that they are referential otherwise they cannot 'scream Star Wars' ;). It think TFA, from an aesthetic standpoint, was a logical extension of the originals. The philosophy behind the design was more orientated and influenced by McQuarry, I give you that. But that is a reevaluation of which creative influence to follow to create something new and grounded. It does not mean that TFA's visual design is unoriginal. It is in fact very original, it only communicates with a different language than the prequels. For instance the prequels started with their design at a meager distance from the originals, but became closer to the design of the original as the story progressed towards the originals. The Force Awakens does the opposite, it begins in its visual language closer to the original trilogy, but also starts to make a move away from it. It is gradual, but it will become more emphasized in VIII and IX.

That's a pretty good point about the PT moving closer to the OT. And the ST moving farther from the OT. Here's to hoping they continue to innovate.

A New Hope's narrative was focused on the destruction of a superweapon. The Force Awakens narrative revolves around the quest of Skywalker and belonging. Now look at those themes again, and consider how important they are to the plot and how much screen time they get in comparison to ANH. Did you notice stuff in TFA that is not in A New Hope? If not, I suggest another viewing. IMAX preferably ;)

I've seen TFA 5 times (once in imax). I love it!
...but, to me, there is no denying the over-reliance of OT imagery/plot points. I love just about eveything about TFA except for that. And I, of course, know it's not a direct remake, and there are very stark differences between TFA and ANH. And I think its a very good entry into Star Wars. Just not the most original.

(I consider 6 and above as a "like" in these IMDB ratings)

You may want to rethink on how you phrase things, but I guess one can't expect any better from delusional and irrational PT haters in the loud and vocal minority as various stats/data have shown (despite of what they like to think of themselves). And no, this is not up for discussion as I have no plans to get into arguments about this matter with anyone (especially when I have more factual tidbits to school haters with).

Ha. Pixels was also the number 2 movie sold. Haha. Popularity ≠ Quality.

    Sincerely, not a prequel hater.

you're just being obtuse at this point. i'm saying that the PT films added a depth to the Star Wars universe in a way that not only complimented the OT, but expanded it (something TFA did not do very well).

i'm hoping that the rest of the ST picks up the slack for TFA, but at this point i'm not terribly optimistic. i'll still love the movies, i'm sure.

No, he is not a newcomer in the USA either. He was basically unknown in the USA but he was pretty much unknown in the UK too. A newcomer is exactly what the definition says: someone new to the scene. Boyega made his film debut in 2011. He went on to star in two more films after that prior to TFA. That's three films over a period stretching from 2011 to 2014 (and two of those three movies he was the lead). Thus he is NOT new to the scene. Yes, he is still early enough in his career to be a rising star (which is what he was nominated for for the BAFTAs), but not a newcomer. Ridley on the other hand fits such a classification because TFA was her first film.

Editing is a nice get but it is far from a huge nomination.
    --- Double Post Merged, Jan 15, 2016 ---
It also, like TFA, had a male and female lead but unlike TFA it didn't had to make one look incompetent in order to help the other shine. Mad Max shows you how to do such pairing in leading roles in which you treat both sexes equally. TFA and Jurassic World on the other hand failed miserably at that.
    --- Double Post Merged, Jan 15, 2016 ---

Seen everything on your list except for The Big Short and Brooklyn. Because of that I would get rid of those two and add "Carol" and "Beast of No Nation." And then I would drop the paint-by-the-numbers "Spotlight" and replace it with "Sicario" which was the best movie I saw last year.

I haven't seen Carol, so I haven't a clue personally on that one. Beasts of No Nation is superb, it just missed out on my list, how Idris Elba didn't get nominated for Best Supporting is incredible.

Disagree on Spotlight being 'paint-by-numbers'. It's a superb film, the 'All the President's Men' for this generation.

Sicario was another that just missed out my list.

The thing is, it the worst score out of all 7 movies. It has none of the original magic from the OT. The advert was amazing, and yes I'm aware it i two themes edited together. i though the movie was 10/10 i loved it, was it perfect no. there was small imperfections but overall it balanced to be everything the fence of starwars was. Remember the OT wasn't either.
but it would have been vastly enhanced by a powerful theme in the final battle.
i can hum at least 5 themes from the OT, how many of you can hum two original ones from this?

I disagree, it was my 3rd favourite score of the 7. I disagree with it having none of the magic of the OT too, tunes such as Rey's Theme, Attack on Jakku Village (which coupled with the main theme is even better), March of the Resistance and Jedi Steps all have the magic as well as a couple more.

As far as humming ones from this? I've been humming Rey's Theme since the thing came out.

    1. I think the revenant will do well to. I'm not sure though why mad max is being separated in any way any differently then TFA, its hardly some art house piece.
i think TFA has been snubbed for what ever reason, but its the first real time a movie that has been so big, has been so snubbed at the oscars,
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Academy_Award-winning_films

    lord of the rings
    Titanic
    Avatar

    Gravity
    Life of Pi
    Inception
    Alice in Wonderland
    Star Trek
    The Dark Knight

Does any one have any ideas why that is?

    2. yeh i agree not the best out of the 7 movie.

    3. seems like the same category really

Well, that basically proves my point that The Force Awakens is technically speaking -i.e. in terms of moviemaking - the highest star wars movie ever rated by critics (if we follow Rotten Tomatoes). Though Metacritic would put it on the third place best rated star wars movies (after ANH and ESB), the only problem with metacritic is that it is based only on a few authoritative English language platforms (and perhaps even US only, I don't know). And I think TFA deserves it. I know back in the days that both fans and critics were very disapointed with Return of the Jedi. And I also know that when Revenge of the Sith came out some critics gave a sigh of relief because it wasn't as bad as they expected it to be. The pro to the force awakens was that it shocked critics how good it actually was. They didn't expect it to be this good. It think ANH, ESB and TFA are very much on par. I do think however that ROTJ is much better than ROTS.

The oscars also have a distinct objective to promote movies they consider to be less popular in cimema but deserving a larger audience. I think Star Wars also has the problem that two of its main leads are newcomers. The academy cannot distinguish the extent to which Ridley and Boyega's characters are separate from their real life persons. In other words, they cannot evaluate when they are acting and when they are not, because they haven't seen other performances of the two. Or at least performances that matter for the academy, Boyega in Attack the Block was pretty stellar.

As for the big movies, expect Star Wars to cap in some extra oscars after Episode IX like the Lord of the Rings trilogy did with Return of the King. But then again there has never been much love between the Academy and Star Wars.

Man, I wish it was that good. Todd McCarthy is simply too average a director to give you us something that great,. All of his choices, all of his shots, were so boring, so plain. I guess we'll agree to disagree on this one.

Well I just got back from the cinema, and my word, The Revenant is the best film of 2015. By a damn mile.

Even though it came out here in 2016. Like most of the Oscar films.

It's absolutely incredible. If it doesn't win Best Picture, and Leo doesn't win Best Actor, along with many of the other 12 awards it was nominated for, it's a travesty in my eyes.

(Though if Spotlight won Best Picture it wouldn't bother me as much, that is a really good film and is perfect Oscar bait)

Editing was one of the big problems I had with TFA.
    :(
JJ used the TV editors from Lost, Alias, etc.
how they got a AMPAS nomination is total mystery to me. George Lucas was also nominated for editing; Star Wars(1977). He deserved it more than the TFA editors.
If I recall the editors of TESB won for their efforts.

Some of the editing made sense as in the fighting with Kylo, Finn, and Rey, Han's death, and the climactic fight scenes, but as I've sold before, some of the reaction shots could have been edited to fit a lot better .
