Uh, isn't saying "solotary=SOLO" reaching out a bit?

 

Ridley herself has been using these words to describe this character in interviews.

She said it's a big clue in that interview.

 

Hahahaha... what? Ever heard of the term flying SOLO? Or playing a SOLO? It means by yourself i.e. solitary... but yes Solotary is not a word.

Still, I don't see how she being a scavenging "orphan" means she can't be a well trained jedi. I think it's highly probable that at some point in the movie Kylo Ren will be in a lightsaber battle with someone, I don't think Finn will be up to the task yet and Luke would probably wipe the floor with him so my guess is Rey is already skilled enough with a lightsaber.

 

Kylo doesn't look all that skilled with his Sithcalibur... seems like he's a hack and slasher. So you wouldn't need a super well trained Jedi to fight him... maybe someone who had about the same amount of training that Luke did at the end of ESB. We won't see Obiwan/Anakin level dueling yet. But Rey could have some tricks up her wraps. I think it could a pretty great moment if Rey kicked into young jedi mode and kicked some ass. Prefer that rather than her needing rescue.

 

Well there are 3 competing views for Rey irrespective of parentage.

1- She is on a mission- she's an operative and has not been here long. Here she could be Luke's padawan and significantly trained.
2- She was trained as a child at Luke's academy and was taken or sent to Jakku her training is limited but she is familiar with some aspects of the force.
3- She has no training and has survived on Jakku for a long time and she is good at parkour and such because just like Ani "she sees things before they happen." Which is why she has such good reflexes.

These are separate from ideas of who her parents were but work with whoever her parents were.

 

I could see it being a little bit of 2 and 3.

 

Agreed, Kylo might not be that skilled, but if neither Finn or Rey has ever held a lightsaber before it would be kind of suicide to use one in battle. Remember Luke never used his while on the death star in ANH. That's why I think it's more likely that Rey is already trained.

 

Not necessarily. Anakin used the force as a pilot before he KNEW he was using it. I always took fighting with a sabre to be allowing the force to guide you as well as good fencing. You need both to truly shine as a sabre wielder. Just a trained swordsman won't be guided by the force to act before the other fighter acts. Just a good force user won't have the ability to get into position and maintain a solid defense while on attack.

Even if her staff is just a staff doesn't mean she has not been using natural skill and the force for years even if no one trained her to lift rocks while doing hand stands.

 

Only place it states an orphan is in casting call description. I'd say she pretends to be an orphan or she may think she is. Right now she is still a mystery other than what Daisy has actually told us. Scavenger and lives in solitude.

She could be there on a mission to find the the sabre by Luke, or she was separated from her parents which could be Han and Leia. Not sure as of yet.

Hmmm, I wouldn't exactly say she "all but confirmed" the rumor. I think she is a Solo and actually hope she is but I think there's got to be more solid confirmation before we can make that leap. On a side note about Rey, I was listening to MSW podcast and they think that Rey has force powers because she prevents Kylo from getting insider her head and she counters and goes into his to obtain Kylo's deep need to be like Vader, prompting her to say he'll never be like Vader. Maybe she is force-sensitive but couldn't another plausible explanation be that Rey was told this by Finn, Poe or even Kaz? I mean there could be other ways to hear this info. Kaz could say after the flashback that Kylo has tried to be Vader since he was such and such and age or since x,y,z happened to him years ago.

 

I would. I can't rewatch the vid since I'm at work but Kennedy says Rey's family will factor into the movie, and Daisy says her "solitary" is a big clue as to who her character is. You could say she a solo type of girl.

 

Or that she is Skywalker, orphaned like Luke her father.

 

JJ and company got into trouble with STiD by saying there was no Khan in the movie. This time around no one has said that Ridley's character is not the daughter of Leia and Han Solo. No one involved is directly confirming that yet but they're taking a different tact of showing or saying a lot just short of it. Some examples:

* The table read photo. All of the new cast is on the left side. Ridley is the only new cast member on the right side, and she is sitting with Han and Leia and Chewie.



* Her full name has been withheld. They gave us just the name "Rey" via the digital trading card in December. She had another name on the production documentation: "Kira".



* Concept art of what appears to be Han Solo's DL-44 pistol being held by Rey was at Celebration 2015. It wasn't the final look for the character and was missing the staff that we've been introduced to so far.



* In Japan they've talked up the role of family. Kennedy: family family family "generational family saga". Family is important to Rey. Ridley: I'm solitary, that's a big clue as to what it is. Kennedy: <chuckles>. ("Solo" is a synonym for "solitary".) In another interview they were asked to describe the movie in one word. Ridley said "family" and Kennedy said "beginning".
