Ryan Leston, Journalist from Total-Geeks and friend to J.J Abrams has some new info about the Puzzlewood Shoot.

"it looks as though ‘Star Wars VII’ will feature a battle scene with thousands of extras. But that’s not all. I have it on good authority that the Puzzlewood shoot involved a full-scale battle which surrounded a pivotal fight scene with some of our main characters."

I think that's Great! Makes me think of the Ewoks battle scenes minus the Ewoks. He also said that everyone involved were really beaming after the shoot. I'm starting to get exited about what I'm hearing. Would this be the ending to episode VII?

To me it brings more to mind the Battle of Geonosis in EPII, after the clones arrive. Granted, I know that was largely CGI, but you know something along that feel of large size.

Would be very nice to see a huge battle of opposing sides done with an emphasis of filming primarily being live-action capture with a minimum of editing done to add the lasers and whatnot.

The reason I don't feel it will look like the prequels is the "thousands of extra" quote. Most extra in the battle of Geonosis was computer generated.

It would be very "Braveheart" to have something like that. Epic.

good OP and a good question.

it could be the ending... but it could also be the very beginning.
(fellowship of the ring - started with a battle before jumping forward to current time, and even the Star trek reboot did something very similar) not saying VII will do this... but it could lol

the biggest question for me is... who? who's fighting in those sorts of numbers?

I think the amazing part of this "thousands of extras" news is not ONLY are we getting extras in costumes, BUUUUUUTT...

...imagine what it's going to look like when (big assumption, but I think it's a given) the film adds CGI to make that even BIGGER. Think LOTR: Two Towers Helms Deep scene. Great blend of practical AND CGI.

There's also a chance that they won't need to add CGI people. Why have thousands if you're going to just CGI more in later? You can do it with a couple hundred if that's the case.

I see your point and it makes sense could be true, but again look at the LOTR films like Two Towers and Return Of The King. They both use a ton of physical extras and thousands were added in. We don't know if the factions of extras are playing one side or consisting of both opposing sides.

I think the bar is set pretty high obviously with Star Wars and if there is an action scene involving gigantic all out war...I just think JJ/Lucasfilm would
use EVERYTHING in the toolbox to make the best Star Wars film possible.

Another great example is JJ's own films like Super 8, Star Trek films etc....he blends CGI and practical together fairly well.

Oh yes, I agree. I was referring more to it being a large-scale battle that we had (to that point) never really seen in Star Wars. The land battles in ESB* and ROTJ* weren't quite as large in terms of people we see at once. Meanwhile, the main battle in EP I looked like a video game... I'm hoping the battle scene rumored from above will be something we can really sink our teeth into.

*Not trying to downplay those battles. They were awesome for what they were, but I still wanted to see say some more snowtrooper action. ;)

Indeed, very epic. Though probably with a bit fewer limbs flying around. :D

It's Star Wars, someone will lose an arm and maybe a leg or two. We can always hope for a good decapitation too.

We won't see someone loose an arm until Ep 8 though (Ep5 Luke, Ep2 Anakin). Ep 7 will be slice in half. (Ep4 Obi-Wan, Ep1 Maul).

ANH: Obi cuts off the arm of the guy in the cantina.
ESB: Luke cut the arm off the Wampa or whatever it is called. Then lost his hand to Vader.
ROTJ: Luke cuts Vader's hand/arm off.
    TPM: Maul cut in half.
AOTC: Obi cuts off the bounty hunter's arm in the bar. Anakin cuts a Geonossian in half. Jango is decapitated. Anakin loses his arm to Dooku.
ROTS: Dooku loses his head. Obi takes Anakin's good arm and both legs.

    Did I miss any?

That's all, I was just noting the big important ones. But I'm pretty sure that's all of them lol Dooku also lost both hands in ROTS and you missed ANH Obi-Wan getting cut in half but he vanishes during so it's not really noted if he is cut in half.

Didn't Anakin decapitate Windu in Palpatine's chambers?

Nope just cut off his hand. But that's another to add to the list. And Yoda cut off some clones' heads too.

Kids schmids. They seem to born with a bloodlust these days. :D

What about Anakin slicing up a few Tusken Raiders in EP II? Or shall we include that in the "Clones and droids don't count!" DjChubakka mentioned? ;)
