    Bigger doesn't necessarily mean better. Especially when it comes to war sequences - the more participants there are, the less you care about them and your attachment to characters gets spread too thin all over the unnecessary extras.

    That depends on how it's done. You can have hundreds or thousands of extras (as soldiers) involved in the scene, yet still have the select few that the audience still cares about, a la Gettysburg or Braveheart, something like that.

    Obviously though that involves the "thousands of extras" just for some expansive shots peppered in between the overall focus on the main characters.
