Greetings! I'm new here, but have been reading S7N forums for ages. I attended Rose City Comicon here in beautiful, Portland Oregon this past Saturday and attended the R2 Builder's Club panel. There were some interesting TFA tidbits mentioned. If this isn't the right place for this, I apologize.

At the very end of the panel, the speaker (I believe Todd Baker) of the R2 Builder's club dropped some interesting tidbits, including that for TFA, there were 3 R2 units built; one for 'glamour shots,' one with "6 wheel drive" for traversing rough terrain which was apparently new and finally..another R2 that contains interior mechanicals that simulate 'shaking,' etc..the same thing Kenny Baker used to do when he was inside R2. He also said that it was built this way because they couldn't find anyone Kenny Baker's size to fit inside R2 to 'shake' the droid.

So..my question is..weren't there reports about another little person - Jimmy Vee at Skellig Michael, and the assumption was he was portraying R2?

The only concern that I have with R2 in this movie it is if he will fly or not...hahahaha

This one I don't mind to see it flying:

I wonder if they could still have Vee in the standard unit in stationary shots, and perhaps the 'mechanical' version is used to 'shake' while moving.

    This is cool, (artoo).
I'm curious to know if the ST R2D2 will bust out any new gadgets or tricks; oil squirts, flames, stun gun, buzz saw, hologram player, etc.

PS; is R2 also a wi-fi hotspot?

George Lucas wanted them to be central, the whole story told through theirs eyes.
Not viable, because both of them have a tiny cameo in TFA. (degraded)
Grade F for the portrayal of R2D2 and C3PO in TFA.

In my opinion it's a wrong decision to demote them to unimportant marginal figures.
My bad, the same happened to Luke and Leia.
So I guess it's correct to shove beloved characters away and replace them.

Yes, meeting them first in Star Wars did set the stage for our experience of a GFFA. And at times C3PO would do a little bit of exposition as he worried out loud about everything- it was a terrific way of connecting the viewer to what was going on. I think R2D2 will play a very big role in the end (if he's utilized properly) because he's seen almost everything from start to finish, and he's never had his memory banks wiped as far as we know. Not only is he the "everyman" in this story (though a quite loyal and brave one) he's an immortal one, almost as if he could be the author of the Journal of the Whills itself.

Exactly...I also don't understand why they were hired to build so much when all he does in TFA is wak withBB-8 and then flies on The Millenium Falcon with Vhewbacca and Rey .

The very last scene of IX will be R2-D2 finally coming home and sitting down. He opens a notebook and takes out a pen. He writes something down and the camera turns around and we see, "Journal of the Whills" written down---the camera fades into the end credits :p.
