Would be really nice to hear a cover version of Lapti Nek in Maz's Castle! The Song needs to be Canon again!

 

They should get real life aliens like Bootsy Collins and George Clinton funk'ing it up. No special effects needed.

 

I know the same song over & over & over again, it was played out.

 

I have the cantina song as my ringtone so now when I watch the movie, I think I'm being called. But like a lot of star wars things that have been parodied over the years, it' s also hard to hear that song without thinking about the Family Guy episodes.

Probably since it may be an area where there are space pirates, maybe a song played that sounds like Dead Man's Chest, yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.

 

A GFFA version of Pink Floyd droning on a Spice-and-death-stick-fueled raga would definitely put a smile on my face

Speaking of Mr. D'an and the OG cantina band--here's the top of a poster I made back in November for a show my band played. I doubt that anyone but me got the joke, but it made me happy (I cropped out the band names to avoid the hint of shameless self-promotion).

 

Lucas wanted a jazzy, bouncy Benny Goodman number when he asked for the cantina track. It's why there's a distinct clarinet sound to the song. It takes a calypso steel drum and merges it with a melody loosely copped from "Sing, Sing, Sing" by Goodman.

So let's remember the song was derived from a source that was already nearly 40 years old. So I'm not sure if adopting or reworking material from 2012 is the solution.

The new song in Jabba's palace more an homage to big band / soul fusion like Gladys Knight & the Pips. I hear pieces of "Heard it Through the Grapevine" by Gladys whenever I hear it.

It needs to bounce, it needs to repeat a simple phrase so the melody is catchy and memorable and it should be celebratory, this is a place of escape and recreation so a maudlin aria is not going to cut it.

Who knows where John Williams goes for inspiration, I remember once reading he was a huge fan of Django Reinhardt and I happen to love his cover of "I Got Rhythm", it really swings. And although "swing" is a 80 year old term, I think that's the mood and beat you want for a cantina scene.

I hope it has its roots in jazz though, if only because it harkens back to a time when clubs would feature live bands that complemented the atmosphere and conversation rather than dominate it. If there isn't a lot of smoke and conversation going on, it ain't jazz in my book. The murmur of the crowd is part of the vibe, part of the music itself.

The mission of a cantina theme song to sit in the background and echo the scene, rather than become the focal point of the scene. It's why the Snootles scene doesn't work as well, because it neither complements the atmosphere, nor does it mirror the mood of the scene.

They don't need that strange lounge singer. She was a tad much.

Maybe they can book the rock band that must play 3 planets away because it's so amazingly loud. Like in Douglas Adams Classic The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe..... .
