    Warning! Spoilers from TLJ below.....

Okay let's talk about these new so called Red (Praetorian) Guards in TFA.

Am I the only one that's not impressed by these designs? Its the first thing from the new movie that has me scratching my head. They look very un star warsy to me. Like they've been lifted or influened from any number of other sci fi movies. Star Wars is supposed to set the bar for new and original designs. I just don't see it here. What does everyone else think?

As I said in the other thread: every time you make the words "sci-fi" and "samurai" match, you talk about SW. In these guards the original Lucas' inspiration for his own universe is more evident than in the past, but the cultural references are mostly the same. I like them, and I like the idea to create new things by pushing forward elements already present in the old movies.

Unfortunately it is Palpatine's guard derivate. It is impossible to conclude otherwise.

I like their designs a lot. They pretty much fit the costume designs of Rey and Kylo Ren. TLJ is really inspired my Samurai movies (mentioned by Rian Johnson) and you can see this more and more.

IMO that's actually a good thing.

I like the designs, you can see the inspiration from the Royal Guards and also see something new in them.

I have to reserve judgment. I am uncomfortable with them all looking different and having random weapons. I would prefer them to all be the same. They come across more as a ragtag bunch of mercenaries that happen to be wearing read to me, rather than an elite guard force.

Just gonna have to see how it is developed in the actual movie.

Just for the red armor. The design is pretty different.

But the influences George used where more suble while still creating his own thing. The jedi were influenced by samurai but he didn't hit you over the head with it by copying the look of the source material.

Look I'm not trying to be negative Nancy. I very much like everything else I've seen to this point. But these guards just don't feel like star wars to me. They look like they were plucked from another franchise and painted red. Just my opinion.

PThis may shred some light on Snoke, it appears he liked Palpatine's guard so much that he has his own designed . He definitively knows about Palpatine's red guards and wants to beat Palps red guards in appearance.

From my point of view its strange that an alien from unknown regions who wasn't connected with Empire or Palpatine in some way likes Palpatine's style of surrounding himself with elite solideirs painted with red uniforms/armors.

Its possible that some of these designs are reworked concept art. For instance BB8 was based on one of McQuarie's drawings for R2. Perhaps the iconic red guard had variations that are only know coming out.

Very much. The question is did Snoke simply impose himself on the Imp Remnant or adopt it. Is this I wonder a statement on the rest of the galaxy. The "peace" of the Empire broken I wonder if freedom and democracy is too much chaos and too much disagreement to please everyone.

I don't think they're guards at all. They look more like knights of Ren. Sure they're red on those containers, but the colors might not be accurate. Look at BB8, he's missing the orange entirely. The color scheme here (the containers) is white/black/red, so of course the black knights would be rendered red on the black background.

It think Snoke likes to have Palps like red guards looking ever better than Palps ones, as a form of fetish symbol of superiority , as a one more sign that his First Order is better than Palps Empire in any way.

Or it is JJ Abrams and RJ sublime fetish symbol that should persuade everyone their films and ideas apply to be better than Lucas's.

Lets hope their Snoke folows Lucas's Plagueis in same way of "quality", because the clash on this field of creativity to, is unavoidable (pwned)

MSN posted a story awhile ago that said these were elite guards of Snoke called Praetorian guards and that they were all Red mimicking the original Imperial guards.

That's a real possibility, although I won't be convinced until it's confirmed officially. First time I looked at them I thought that the design was different for the 2 characters on the containers, so I figured they can't be guards (since guards would have the same "uniform"), but now I noticed that only the helmets look different. So yeah, they might be guards. But they look pretty...unpolished given their status.

Well that would make sense since Snoke is Yupe Tashu and Sideous mixed into one entity. Remember the black Holocron? When Yupe fell to his death on the living force of Jakku, Emporer Palpatine merged from withen the Holocron with Yupe.

    Ahhh, another Snoke theory!

Praetorian Guard implies there is an Empire and Emperor... hmm

Nah Snoke was a janitor well "Head of the Stewards Guild" he was in charge of cleaning Palatine's office. In the office was an Urn it was worth a great deal so he stole it in the hours after the fall of the Empire. Turns out it had the ashes of Darth Plagueis in it. He was more of an undead sentient ash spirit who was inhaled by Snoke when the urn got knocked over. The freed undead spirit possessed Snoke and DP used Snoke's essence to try to reform himself. He is mostly back together. Having heard all od Sidious' plans he high tailed it to Unknown regions and took control of the 1st Order.

    Right.

Most legit is to presume they are evolution of Palpatine's red Imperial guard.
    --- Double Post Merged, Jun 13, 2017, Original Post Date: Jun 13, 2017 ---
Paradoxically even this story looks superior to Snoke mysterious unknown new character Dark Sider from unknown regions, that will not been explained, that ,however, for whatsoever reasons developed a fetish on Palpatines' red Imperial (now Praetorian, thats new because means the same-means Emperors ) guard..

Well the FO is made up of the children of ex imperials & other children abducted from there families so of course they are going to take the inspiration from the Empire it would be very odd if they didn't.
Also just because they are apparently guarding Snke doesn't mean he has any influence over how they dress Orr what weapons they use as they are FO members who have been assigned to his guard detail.
