SPECULATION Black Cloaked Figure?

Eh I feel like Ben had his doubts all along and now we're just seeing it come to a head. I figure this is really going to be similar to Mara Jade from the old EU.

 

I havent read the mara jade stuff from the old eu but i heard she was brainwashed and luke saved her

 

Hm. I do also think that there's a chance she's the Mara Jade of canon, but it doesn't work if she is a double agent the whole movie.
She would have to be redeemed at the end and they would have to explain why she isn't in the OT.
It's possible that the empire captures her at the end of Rogue One though.

It is definitely a bacta tank. I don't understand why some think it's a kyber crystal.
Just look at the pipes mounted to the ceiling!

If we're to believe that it isn't Snoke (confirmed by Pablo) and that this is truly a spin-off, it can't be any major character from the main saga.

So it's got to be someone important to Jyn, Krennic, Galen, or possibly Saw.

Maybe it's Lyra Erso? We don't know what happened to her; perhaps she was injured or became ill with some mystery virus, and Galen is working for the Empire because they're holding her (and/or research that could save her) hostage?

Admittedly, it is a bit "Mr. Freeze", but just putting it out there...

 

The Kyber crystal is in the bacta tank to heal its cracks .

 

I think the Lyra Erso theory is probably the best. What if it's a Mr Freeze like Carbonite bacta tank. What's the best way to hold someone prisoner and ensure they don't sacrifice themselves nor age. Jyn's father could be kneeling to her as a sign of sorrow and regret for bringing the station online but also for what she is going through and saying he will make things right again.

 

This shot is from the final scene – one of the heroes (Jyn?) gets injured very badly and is captured by the empire. They put her/him in the tank, with some brainwashing and dark side treatment, to spill alliance secrets and that a cybernetic enhanced monstrosity can arise and bow before its new master, before go hunting for its former rebel comrades in a different spin-off.

But then, why does the black cloaked figure kneels first? It doesn’t make sense. Aaaaahhhh….

If it's a captured rebel in the Bacta tank, why the Imperial guards? Surely Storm troopers would suffice for guarding a prisoner. It's gotta be Vader. Still doesn't shed light on who the black cloaked figure is though.

 

I think the Emperor being in the tank makes the most sense, but Ian McDiarmid is not in the movie.

I'm hoping this shot shows up in a new TV spot, otherwise I'll be worried it was cut.

 

the theory that it is Galen's wife in the bactatank sounds interesting and plausible.

 

carbonite bacta tank? that's an oxymoron...as faras i know, you cant freze someone in a bacta tank and have them survive.

 

Yeah, Palps getting injured in some sort of explosion and being in the Bacta tank and the black cloaked figure being Vader would make sense, maybe Ian McD was telling a little white lie. Or maybe it's Plageuis

 

I highly doubt he would be in the bacta tank. Actually, he won't be in the movie at all. I think that because Vader is supposed to be the most imposing figure in the OT. Then Palps is above him so he is scarier which is why his intro in ESB cant be diluted within a spinoff

I dunno. I think she could still be with the empire at the end of R1. Leaves it open for another movie or books and novels to explore her relationship with Lukes and full conversion to the light. Hell maybe they don't even meet until the end of ROTJ? Who knows there's many ways it could go. My pet theory is she is this EU''s Mara Jade tho.

 

It really is the one shot from the trailers that doesn't line up with anything else we've seen.

I really hope it's worth it and not a pointless tie-in to the main saga. That would defeat the purpose of the spin-offs, to me. There should be no major revelations about the saga films (e.g. "it's Snoke's origin!") in these films.

 

If Snoke "is just Snoke" then him being in the bacta tank is a great way to "tie him in" to the new expanded universe for what is currently a disappointment of a creation (2 me so far).

How is that a "pointless tie in"? It's Better than reading some book or comic.

 

Yeah that would take away from this being a standalone movie for the characters.

 

Revelations about saga characters should be made in saga movies.
I'm not against a Snoke spin-off later on, but they can't reveal something important about him before they do it in the main saga films.

(Although, in my opinion, the spin-offs should be as separate as possible, otherwise what's the point?)
