Interesting list to go through in your link... I knew of some, not of others, and a few I was unsure of. Those commercial ones are pretty creepy, even when I was watching them when they first came on.

I wouldn't be against Ewan making an appearance given the circumstances. I feel the use of Alec's likeness would be too controversial, too weird for even us hardcore fans, and just more difficult than it should be for production anyways.

Besides, I thought Force ghosts had been described as only able to exist for some time before their consciousness "dissolved into the Force" or whatever it was. He doesn't have to appear, just Luke could mention something like "I can't commune with my old masters anymore *sad face*"...

Lucas had been buying up likenesses for years, I'm sure he has Alec's as well.

I do think it would be far easier to use Ewan and tweak his face with a little makeup and CGI.

Though of course the easiest thing to do would be to go back to the OT and replace Obi's force ghost with Ewan

    ;)

Here are couple legal issues with using celebrities likenesses. Though it would not surprise me that it elements that relate to using an actor's likeness are elements of contract negotiation for awhile now.

    http://www.schleimerlaw.com/elf2synthespians.htm

Here is a denial from Lucasfilm that they are not buying up likenesses.

Sorry for the boring links but I proposed that Lucas was buying the likenesses i figured I should post the denial.

There are ways around this: e.g., Obi has grown so powerful that he literally glistens to the point his fine details/features can no longer be seen (lots of lens flare opportunity there, too); 0r he speaks from behind a waterfall so we only see his silhouette; or he speaks from a dark corner of a cave; or he has his hood up.

Do we need to see the face fully? It's Obi-Wan, we'll know....

I think Ewan McGregor will make a guest force ghost appearance as Obi Won. I know in the novels his ghost left Luke earlier in his life.

Technologically speaking, they don't need Ewan to fill for Obi's ghost.

The only issue I see with re-creating Alec as Obi is if there was a legal issue.
I am still convinced ILM is planning this as a big surprise to the fans, and Disney has cut a deal with The Guinness Clan.

Another question I ask myself is: if they do so, do they have to put Alec Guinness in the credits, or it goes uncredited?

I would like to see Ewan as Obi-Wan in SW 7.
Force Ghosts are just ghosts, maybe they can choose their appearance.

My point is... maybe force ghosts can choose to appear younger. Maybe their look is not solid thing.

In my opinion Ewan is Obi-Wan. And he is alive. They can use him.

I think Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan was one of the best things about the PT. That being said, Sir Alec Guiness IS Obi-Wan Kenobi. Period. If Luke sees Obi-Wans force ghost, it HAS to be Alec Guiness, and if they don't have the technology to make it believable then they shouldn't do it at all imo. If ILM could make it work though, it would be like the words fantastic and awesome getting together and having octuplets! (ben)

Is there any possibility that unused footage from the original trilogy could be used? I know Lucas wanted to do something similar with Peter Cushing for ROTS (from what I've heard). I don't know if any footage exists, but it'd be an option if they do have something to work with.

People seem to be ignoring what's already been done.

Again, Ewan could portray him physically with a little voice modification and slight CGI done to his face to match up correctly. That almost entirely avoids just using old footage and post-Mortis recreations of Alec.

That's why I think the whole "MVS could be playing Obi Wan" speculation is completely absurd. Nothing even remotely points in that direction except that we have a really old accomplished actor involved nobody knows what to do with other than claim he might be a cyborg, a trans-racial Boba Fett/Clone, Anakin's childhood friend, an Imperial Officer, another Bounty Hunter, Kanan (who would be 20 years younger the MVS in TFA), or even the main Villain of the trilogy, despite the fact that he's 85 and, God bless him, might not make it to 2017, let alone 2019 when he's pushing 90.

Grasping at straws, the die hard are.

I can see your point he really had nothing left to teach or advise for what Luke already knows.
I think so the last generation saw Ewan playing Obi Won it will appeal to them.

I agree. I really do not see the point of using Alec as Obi-Wan anymore.
He is dead. Let him rest in peace.

Ewan is alive, and quite popular as Obi-Wan. They can just use him as young Obi-Wan, or old Obi-Wan ( with mask, or CGI aging ).
Let not forget that he won the voting for most popular Star Wars character on Star Wars.com with Ewan face.

Yoda's force ghost requires no other actors, does not require additional explination about sudden youth.

it would be cool to see Qui-Gon but according to the story that Disney has decided to go with we wont be seeing him. his voice however can be heard, but he only has 3rd party connections to the new crew so even that is unlikely.
