This article talks about different ways deceased actors have been "reanimated" to fill the obligations of the character they portrayed. The Sopranos method didn't really work but I never noticed the technique used in Gladiator so maybe the option to show Alec Guiness is possible. Tron 2 was much later and looked really bad so who knows. I am surprised this article didn't mention the really bad Bruce Lee movie where at one point they floated a stationary image of his face over that of another actor.

Mods, I hope that posting this link is okay...

I'm thinking they just use Ewan to do the voice and have no visual manifestation. A la "Use the Force, Luke" and "So was I, if you remember" from the OT.

Yeah but Obi was established as a rock solid ghost in the last episode, tangible, so is Yoda and Anakin

I would think using an actor's voice is probably easier than his image. They have Alec's dialogue stored I'm sure. They could just use his voice and then program it to "speak" different dialogue. Course it would probably sound robotic like Siri or Stephen Hawking.

I think using Ewan would be a good way to throw the PT a bone, since Ewan is (IMHO) one of the only good things about the PT. But then again they could probablly use old footage of Alec and have the computer generate the voice, like you said. OR just let Frank Caliendo or some other impersonator do the voice. (They could probably do a better Alec than Ewan could.)

Well, having just watched Season 6 of The Clone Wars -- epic btw! -- it become quite obvious that Obi-Wan's ghost isn't really needed for the ST.

YES, Alec Guinness Kenobi did commune with Luke more as a ghost but in TCW Qui-Gon tells Yoda that it is his destiny, his task, to learn to become one with the Force and transcend the divide from being with the cosmic Force. So now I'm thinking if we see ghosts it will be Yoda with Frank Oz's voice, which would be fine with me.

I don't know if it is necessary to have Obi back for the plot of TFA. It would certainly be an emotional scene and I like the idea.
I don't think there would be any problem technically. ILM can take advantage of the glowing and transparent appearance of a force ghost and use a 3d replica for full length shot like in TRON and something like what was done with Marlon Brando in Superman returns for close ups.
But IMO they will go for Yoda. It's simpler and coherent with the clone wars Yoda arc.

I would really love to see Alec Guinness one more time on the big screen, even if his appearance is only some seconds long.
Obi Wan was always there to guide Luke, even after his death/in his netherworld live.
It would be a nice touch to bring him back, if it's possible, why not have him in.
I would prefer Guinness over McGregor for continuity and as actor.

When you first see Luke he is sitting at a table across from force ghost Ben. Yoda is at his left and Anakin his right. The four are chatting like old friends. Finally you hear Yoda, "An idiot's array I have. Futile are your efforts. Told you I did."
