It would be cool, because he is the first Jedi that learned how to become force ghost.
If Luke is very powerful in new trilogy. And he is in isolation ( according to speculation ), force ghosts are maybe his only company.

So all of a sudden Obi Wan looks thirty years younger, when we've seen him as an older force ghost for two films..

It makes no sense. Not only would that confuse the audience.. But why would a Jedi (trained to be devoid of egocentricity) want to appear as their younger self? Jedi should not care for superficial things such as external appearance, especially those with the wisdom to become one with the force. We saw Obi Wan and Yoda appear as their older selves as ghosts, so THAT should be canon.

They can make Ewan to appear much older with mask or CGI. Something like that is already done in Captain America 2.

But in my opinion, young Obi-Wan would be cool also. Force ghosts are just force energy. I think that Obi-Wan only has chosen to look older to Luke.
Because Luke knows him in life only as old man.

So we should respect Alec Guinness by not including his CGI likeness, and instead use Ewan Mcgregor and make him look like Alec Guinness in post?

    Right.....

They could do what they did with Jeff Bridges in TRON: Legacy.

I hate that GL switched Anakins force ghost to Hayden Christensen at the end of ROTJ. I think that's what's fueling the young/old Obi-Wan force ghost debate. If he would have left Sebastian Shaws image untouched, then it would be canon that force ghosts appear at the age they were when that particular Jedi died. Now it's ambiguous. Imo he should've never replaced Shaw and Obi-Wan should only appear as Alec Guiness. But there's precedence, so it can go either way and still be considered as following established canon.

Dude nobody is actually realty arguing for a young Force Ghost Ovi Wan.

Do people not know how to read anymore? And if there is anyone arguing for it, it's one person, MAYBE...I hardly call that a "debate."

Well... to be fair... I think the idea has been put out a few times, in the same lines as Hayden got put into RotJ, so the precedence is there... there are also some who think that Ewan could get CGI into an older Kenobi

Yeah...um...I've joked about the former possibility and the latter is just logical.

The technology is there and there's a much better chance that a modified Ewan works more so than a Guiness back from the dead.

Well... one would think having a framework and mapping the texture ala mocap would work better than a total CGI ala Jar Jar... perhaps this is what Domhnall is there for... to the best of my knowledge, Ewan is not in VII... of course, if they were going to mocap it with a wrapper, then having an actor who looked similar would not be necessary... just thinking out loud here...

Dude....You only need one person for something and one person against it for it to be considered a "debate". Just a friendly fyi. :)

    I just verified on IMBD.COM,

Marlon Brando was credited as "Archived Footage" on Superman Returns.

Obi Wan was in ALL Star Wars episodes until now...

I'm pulling for an Alec or Ewan cameo via hologram like in Rebels.

i think you are 100% correct: switching Anakin's ghost was ridiculous and utterly cringe-worthy. this guy was not impressed.

personally, i think any actor option would be fine should Obi-Wan make a come back: a CGI'd/mod-capped McGregor, an archival Guiness, or MVS could all be good, if done correctly. just, no changing it out randomly, ok? stick with one ghost this time! as for ethics, i don't think it would be an unethical practice to re-create the likeness of a character. of an actor, that would be different: you can't have a brand new movie starring Alec Guiness as a whole new character. since he's already been Obi-Wan though it's more about what the character looks like, not the actor.

i think this thread raises another question: will Luke see any ghosts? would it be relevant to this new generation's story to have Luke seeing Obi-Wan and Yoda? they trained Luke, it's true, but now it's Luke's turn to train Jedi. during Luke's training Obi-Wan was not visited by Qui-Gon, nor was Yoda visited by anyone (except for a sassy Obi-Wan). also, speculation based on the title, maybe Luke can't see the ghosts of his former masters due to some disturbance in the Force. maybe it's only until after the Force "awakens" that he is able to connect with them again.
