This question is not a knock on Ridely, Boyega or any of the new or old cast members that will be part of Ep.8. Just simply looking for peoples opinion on the matter. Personally I think Ep.8 is going to be great. But, as I listen to people rave about TFA, one of the main reasons for it's high praise was Ford's performance and his great chemistry will both Boyega and Ridley. Han Solo was back to his old charming self, with on-point humour and was a commanding presence whenever he was on screen.

Now that one of the major elements that made TFA so great is gone for ever, are the the new cast or even Hamill up to the task of replacing everything Harrison brought to the opening chapter of the saga?

With Luke Skywalker being absent from TFA, I dare say Han Solo had hardly any competition in his scenes. So I don't think Luke's presence in Episode VIII will make his character look worse than Han Solo in TFA. :D

I definitely believe that Ridley, Boyega and Hamill will carry EP8.
Of course FordĀ“s performance was outstanding, but Ridley and Boyega don't need to hide. They were great, too.

In general I think EP8 will have some great acting. Just look at the newcomers for EP8 like Benicio del Toro.

i think all of the newcomers are astonishingly good!
so long as the script is equal to their talents, it shouldn't be a problem.

i fully expect Hamill to have a role similar to Ford's: crucial, but not necessarily shouldering the heavy stuff.
Han had a few action scenes, but he was mostly there to help Rey and Finn and to try to rescue his son.
I expect Hamill will be doing much of the same: helping Rey and Finn and trying to rescue Han & Leia's son.

..Agree with the posts above. The "new big four" (Boyega, Ridley, Driver & Poe) seem to be able to make as good a job as the "old big three". TFA showed that good script writers can manage to provide this special kind of humor for a charismatic actor that was the reason for me to feel such a sympathy for Harrison Ford's Han Solo. Therefore I hope they keep in mind how important Boyega's part is. Because he could fill a part of the "Solo-gap".
And of course big Luke fans like us will love to see more of him in EP VIII:)

I think tat Boyega and Ridley and Isaac all have great chemistry together and it's about the actors having chemistry and not who they're acting against such as Ford so I would say that, YES, they'll be fine without Ford since Ford is done now .

While Ford was kind of the glue for TFA (at least I found him to be) Mark Hamill is a truly great actor. Even in relatively small appearances like Trickster in The Flash, he's such a strong and enthralling presence, and though his scene at the end of TFA was wordless ("smell the fart" acting, as Joey from Friends would say) it was still an emotionally evocative and powerful scene. It really gave a sense that he and Rey had somewhere to go in 8, a strong path for them to take the story.

Maybe I'm reading too much into a scene that was carried by intense staring but honestly I'm so excited to see more of Luke at last, and I think the writers not only recognise that expectation but I think they're going to absolutely run with it. I mean, he was the original protagonist of Star Wars, let's not forget :)

Sorry that that ended up being so oddly written, it's been a very long day.

The simple answer is yes. Ridley and Boyega were excellent in TFA and Hamil has grown so much as an actor since his early SW years.

I understand your concern, but I think we will be alright. I was also thoroughly engaged in the 30-45 minutes or so before Han Solo appeared. Saying that Harrison Ford was excellent in the movie does not mean that the other actors were bad. John Boyega, Daisy Ridley and Oscar Isaac (who I think will have a larger role in Episode VIII than he had in TFA), with the addition of Mark Hamill, will be able to carry the movie.

Nah... I think Ridley-Boyega-Isaac-Driver stole the scene even next to the old glories. I mean, Ford gave us a very impressive interpretation, but the real winners of TFA are the new ones.

I see Finn as almost a comic relief. I thought the "giving too hard" feeling of the trailers was just because they were showing such action scenes on those, but Boyega felt too much for me at times, and the character's storyline too obvious. Don't misunderstand me, is a nice element on the movie and works in the formula, but focusing on @Darth Chewie question, I don't think he's strong enough to be a guarantee. Some people called him "the new Denzel Washington", well I'm not agree, at least for now. It will depend on what VIII has to offer. I'm looking forward to Hamill and Ridley. Also, Oscar Isaac is a great actor with a flat role in TFA, so I'm expecting him to have more material to work with in this one. Also Adam Driver, he's so good that I can't wait to see where he's character goes and how he performs it. Will be nice to see Lupita's back too, now that her "experimental character" is clear, I think she's going to be even better as Maz this time. Don't forget legendary Del Toro and Laura Dern are coming too :) Yeah; I think VIII will be great.

Oh I personally have no concerns. I was just curious on people thoughts on the matter, and simply wanted to create some conversation on the potential acting an chemistry moving forward. :)

Alone and/or individually, no. As a 3-member unit, I think that the story would move forward given their environment and interaction with it (as we'd see it), but it takes dedicated supporting actors that make it believable and worthwhile.

While Harrison Ford's performance as Han was terrific, he wasn't the glue. What made me love The Force Awakens was following Rey and Finn as I genuinely love their characters. And while I can't wait to see more of one of my biggest childhood heroes, I'm not excited about Episode VIII for Luke, I'm excited to see Rey and Finn (and hopefully more Poe Dameron).
So, yeah, they can carry it.

Why stop with Boyega? Ridley's character wasn't endearing either, like Padme with Jedi super-powers.

So the question is, can Mark Hamill carry Epsisode 8?

Sadly I have to agree, her character was too flawless - a very disappointing character for me.
I guess that Ridley as a newcomer don't had a say in the interpretation of her role.
It would be a smart move to improve/alter the new characters.
If Hamill fails, Ep.VIII will bomb, no doubt.
Just stare like the Count of Monte Cristo will not be enough this time. (and I guess he never wanted it this way)
