Oh hell yes. I predict it will absolutely destroy Avatar. Probably will never be caught outside of the SW franchise. The Phantom Menace would've had it not been for the mixed reviews, and bad word on the street. When I first saw the Abrams Star Trek reboot the thing that was going through my mind was "Abrams sure makes a good Star Wars movie." JJ is a crowd-pleaser. He knows the game, that's why they chose him to do this. Sure, there is a remote possibility TFA might be a bad movie. But not bloody likely! TFA is going to curb-stomp Avatar.

I'd love for it to take down Avatar, a movie I hate with a passion.

Here's a better question: why should we care? Money doesn't equal quality. And it's guaranteed to make mega bucks no matter what, it doesn't really matter whether or not it "beats" other major blockbusters.

We care because it gives a message to the studios..
If it's good, and people like it then people will go to movie theater... It says this is what we want to see...

Look at the amazing spider-man 2, it didn't tank as fantastic four, but not doing as great as expected was enough to stop all plans, make a deal with marvel and reboot the franchise

Avatar was released December 18, 2009, and passed the $2 Billion mark 7 weeks later.

I think it's possible for The Force Awakens to do something very close to that.

So, based on your personal opinion about Avatar, you want The Force Awakens to fire a barrage of revenge revenue receipts at Avatar until it cries uncle?

    That'll show them.

What does dethrone even mean here? Does 2nd place have to give the money back or something? Is there an actual throne? No? Maybe a trophy for the mantle at home? What...?

I think the vast majority of SW fans share your opinion, but its still fun to speculate nonetheless. The only thing that matters is that the film is profitable enough to keep the SW movies going for a long time.

I do agree though, the amount of money that something makes doesn't always correlate with its actual quality. I think most people have particular favorite films that resonate with them on a personal level, but those films will never even crack the list of top grossing films.

Great point, it would be nice if quality films with great storytelling were the norm, rather than blockbusters like the Transformer's franchise.

Nope, the money doesn't go back, but it is just a little depressing that the biggest grossing film of all time is just a subpar movie only notable for its technology. I always like to see story trump effects, and Avatar is the opposite of that.

How would TFA making more money change that?

Simple, provided that TFA is a good movie with good character development, it puts an actual good film on the top of the heap rather than a gimmick film like Avatar. It doesn't make Avatar a better movie or the general movie going audience better viewers, but it would be nice to see the most profitable movie of all time actually be a good film, plain and simple.

Ahh yes, I agree that it doesn't have to "beat" avatar, but it's great to speculate...
I think that just making the $225 mil, when the previous December record is under $100 mil, on opening weekend is a good enough "message " to say that we are interested...

But it will do better if the movie is great and hopefully that tells other studios to take care of their properties and give us good movies, instead of giving us terminator genysis or fantastic four...

I've been a Star Wars fan since 1976 (when I saw the first pictures from the movie). I saw it 35 times in the theater (for most of those, I was let in free by management).

I've been an Avatar fan since 2009. Saw it 4 times in the theater.

I love it when films I love do well.

My hope, and confidence, is that Star Wars The Force Awakens will be very successful at the box office.

But no rivalry exists between the makers of these films!
It's an illusion invented by the media.

It was the first 3d film, tickets were inflated. I saw avatar twice in the theatre. I don't know of people staying st the theatre and watching avatar all day, many Star Wars fans do this. It will be the multiple viewings that will put TFA over Avatar. As rediculous as Avatar's global tally is, TFA can easily match it.

First off, let me say that if TFA is watchable I'd love for it to beat Avatar.

BUT I don't think it will and here is why:

I don't know what it was about Avatar - maybe it was the 3D or the Imax screens and sound that expanded beyond people's field of view which overwhelmed their senses... maybe it was the new technology creating something people had never seen before- but there was some sort of subconscious hypnotic effect I saw come over people (I watched it on a tiny screen at home not in the theaters)

But everyone was overwhelmed in the same way... an experience..

you even had people wanting to kill themselves because they wanted to go live in that world and couldn't
    :p

    It certainly wasn't the writing.

    and then.... nothing
it's hardly mentioned.. it hasn't stayed in the pubic consciousness like Star Wars or other movies of yesteryear

I hope TFA will be a good and entertaining movie. but at the end of the day its not showing something people have never seen before

these are the reasons why i think it won't beat it.. although since the original Star wars is my favorite movie of all time I WANT it to beat it ;)

I don't believe a rivalry exists either, the stories are very different. Like I said, in my personal opinion films like Avatar represent what is wrong with a lot of big blockbusters in Hollywood, style over substance. Avatar certainly isn't the worst offender, the Transformers movies probably get that dubious award. That being said, people are entitled to their own opinions and I certainly don't want to step on your love of Avatar my friend :).

Daffy, I loved the Rifftrax treatment of Avatar! I was outa breath from laughing so hard! (And remember I'm an Avatar fan... someone who didn't like it will probably laugh harder! )

(Everyone should run—not walk— and get the full rifftrax for Avatar)

The only films that have a chance of topping Avatar in the near future are TFA, ep 9 (being the conclusion to the new trilogy), or the next Avatar film.

It all hinges on word of mouth, really. With all the pre-sales records being smashed it's clear we're on track for the highest ever December opening weekend, so if the movie is good/great, TFA should reach $2 billion, at the very least.

    It rhymes, it's like poetry.

Star Wars The Force Awakens will beat AVATAR as the biggest Box-Office hit of all-time.

Then, Avatar 2 will beat Star Wars.

Then some Minions or other kid movie will beat them all, when the ticket prices will be 25-30$ and in odorama or in 4D.

Makes me remember when I spent an afternoon interviewing this wonderful man who is Don Bluth who was telling me back then : The future of movies will be an interactive experience (He also was persuaded that videogames would crash in a near future).

I am still convinced that the movie director that really solves this puzzle, where the audience truly "interacts" with what's on the big screen (mainstream big budget - as Avatar did to 3D movies)... he will surely top everything in Box Office charts.
