Just something I found myself wondering today, and couldn't easily find a thread about it nor do I even remember any discussion about it around here.

Basically, what would you think if the Millennium Falcon ends up getting destroyed in the films in some fashion?

I found myself casually thinking of at least two pieces of concept art floating around for a while now (one or both of which may have been fan-fakes, I can't remember their status) that showed the Falcon either seemingly engulfed in flames, or straight up in a junk heap. While the Falcon was mentioned for each, the discussion went elsewhere for both of those.

As far as the Wookieepedia addresses, there's no mention in the "Legends" section of it ever having been destroyed, unlike many other named ships that were indeed destroyed at some point either in the films or the EU. So if they decided to go that route in TFA or one of the other sequel films, would you be able to accept it? Would it ruin your experience? Would it only matter if anyone was inside it? Would you care at all?

    ---

Personally I'm not sure what I'd think. It's very odd to think of this ship as becoming a character in and of itself... well, not so odd for me, as Farscape had my beloved Moya as well as Talyn (both "living ships" with personalities)... but this is different. The Falcon has nothing to it really except for the experiences the characters have shared in it. Still... for me it seems almost like we'd be losing an important character, and any possible destruction had better be worth it.

I mean, she may be a hunk of junk... but she's a hunk of junk we all love.

Han's going to die. Leia builds a death star. Luke turns to the dark side. Falcon destroyed. Welp there goes my childhood.

Every time I watch the teaser trailer- even now- I get embarrassingly excited when the theme music starts and the Falcon appears. I rewatch that tiny, tiny bit of footage so often it's getting beyond a joke to be honest. The first time I saw this poster I thought it was real and my immediate reaction was wide eyed horror and a 'how about nope?'

Now I know that it's fan made but it still gives me chills- I'm in love with a space ship, what can I say? If it's got to go down- and if its captain has to go down with it- then I really hope it's worth it. The same goes for Chewie, I love that furball!

You forgot to mention it's supposedly Luke that kills Han and Leia might kill Luke with that Death Star III. Maybe the Falcon gets it at the same time. Oh, isn't speculation fun?!

Indeed. I have to imagine that were they to destroy it, it has to have someone in it and it has to be a heroic death that means something. Anything less than that would seem sacrilegious.

Harkening back to my original mention of Farscape:
When one of the living ships is killed off, one of the main characters goes down with him in an intentional heroic deed of self sacrifice. It would not have had the same sense of extreme sorrow and loss otherwise.
(spoiler tags simply because this isn't a Farscape fansite, and I'd like to not spoil any surprises for any people I might happen to convert along the way ;))

It'd be cool to me to see the ship crash--Han and leia die, whatever...

The ST ends with Lando having fixed the ship, and our hero character/redeemed character sets off in the ship for unknown quarters, thus providing us our suspense, sadness, and joy from a returning old friend or two, as well as a way to keep the falcon fresh in the future.
