Agreed. Especially with the last part. I am now definitely in full support of this theory and I would too, love to see this pan out.

I have assembled another little bit of informaton, I think.

DJ is DJ and he's a slicer. One day his beats will be legendary:

Cardinal had to do something for a living, after Phasma kicked his ass around 9 years (I think) before TFA.

I mean (theorizing of course) he could have earned himself reputation of "slicer", by selling knowledge about the First Order "entaglements" he had.

Finn and Rose are going to find D.J. for his obvious reputation of the one who is able to penetrate (slice) F.O. security.

 

I agree with the First Order dissent and Finn's story arc, but not with Cardinal. I believe he's there only for the Phasma story line.

 

I think it's definitely plausible, but I'm betting he's not the cardinal and just a new character. Look at that face, his lean, his slacker attitude. I'm skeptical that this guy once trained stormtroopers. What we know about del toro's character indicates he is a slicer with some sort of underworld / criminal vibe. It just doesn't seem to me like an ex-military man would end up so unkempt and loose. Also, if he was once a great soldier, how is he also the right slicer for the job? Wouldn't he be the muscle and not brains? Or is he just that badass that he's become the best slicer in the time since he's been with the FO? Doesn't seem to me like those skill sets have a lot of crossover...I also don't see the need to introduce a new character into the Finn / Phasma beef. He betrayed her, she wants him dead. It doesn't need to have more to it than that.

That being said, this is based on nothing but my own opinion...It's quite possible this theory may be correct, and there are plenty of good reasons outlined in this thread. Good catch!

Cardinal seems very neat , clean cut, and routine oriented. DJ seems like a messy more rugged type, from the very little we know. It's possible he changed after feeling the first order let him down, and there is the time he gets drunk, doesn't shave or polish his armor and doesn't seem to care. But I think this is unlikely. DJ is also said to not clearly be on a side, but Cardinal would likely be focused on taking down phasma, not very neutral or ambiguous

 

I have a feeling being left for dead and realizing that the cause you fought for is a lie and having nothing left after that point would do something pretty drastic to your overall character (a la lieutenant dan in forrest gump).

Maz could know about him, send Finn and Rose his way to contact him, only to find out he's not the person he once was, but then upon hearing Finn talk about Phasma, DJ sees how he could exact revenge.

 

I applaud the arrival of another new and easily disposable minor character! It's an edgy and fresh decision by the amazing writers!
